The Storyline


"Medium," a chilling drama series inspired by the real-life story of research medium Allison DuBois. Emmy winner Patricia Arquette stars as a young wife and mother who, since childhood, has been struggling to make sense of her dreams and visions of dead people. She gradually comes to grips with her extraordinary ability to talk to dead people, see the future in her dreams and read people's thoughts.

Her biggest challenge is convincing her boss, D.A. Devalos and the other doubters in the criminal justice system that her psychic abilities can give them the upper hand when it comes to solving violent and horrific crimes whose mysteries often reside with those who live beyond the grave.

Medium Episode Guide Season 1



1. Pilot
Allison keeps having “dreams” that her husband Joe is determined to disprove. In a drastic measure he submits her “dreams” to different law enforcement agencies. Much to his surprise he gets a hit on a case out of Texas, involving the murder of a teenage boy.

2. Suspicions and Certainties
The Phoenix D.A. calls Allison to seek her help in selecting a jury. He needs a jury that is sure to return a guilty verdict and deliver the death penalty. Allison’s abilities are tested when she doubts herself.

3. A Couple of Choices
D.A. Devalos introduces Allison to Detective Lee Scanlon in an effort to help him with the apparent murder/suicide of his sister and her husband. Scanlon is standoffish about Allison’s abilities until her theories start to lead in the killer's direction.

4. Night of the Wolf
Allison alerts D.A. Devalos that one of his witnesses is giving false information to the police sketch artist. Allison dreams she is being chased through an airport by a wolf who holds the secret identity of the real killer. Meanwhile Bridgette, her middle daughter, gets a new "playmate"...apparently Allison is not the only one who sees dead people.

5. In Sickness and Adultery
Allison is frustrated when Joe has a medical procedure done and she cannot "see" anything about his health or future. She seeks the help of Catherine, a fellow psychic, who warns of her trouble ahead. Meanwhile, Allison dreams of the location of a murder weapon and is later called to court to explain why and how she knows the location of the weapon.

6. Coming Soon
Allison has a horrifying dream that one of her daughters has been kidnapped and murdered. She is traumatized when she runs into the murderer from her dream at the D.A.'s office, providing information about a recent burglary. Joe thinks her obsession with this would-be killer is being fueled by another source.

7. Jump Start
Allison keeps dreaming of a girl throwing herself off a cliff into a ravine. Finally Allison sets out to find this girl, who turns out to be someone who was dating a defense attorney’s son. Elsewhere Joe is worried about the health of a co-worker who Allison foresaw collapsing from a heart attack.

8. Lucky
Allison's brother is enlisted in the United States Army, and Allison is rocked to the core and emotionally drained when she dreams of his death. While dealing with that she is handed a troubling case involving arson and an uncooperative young witness.

9. Coded
Ariel is having dreams of a young girl gone missing. Her dreams place the girl with an "ogre" holding her against her will. Allison tries to help her daughter decipher the message the dream is delivering, which causes Ariel to venture off to follow a clue.

10. The Other Side of the Tracks
When Allison turns to a professor, who claims to speak to the dead, she gets more than she bargains for. A dream of two boys racing parallel with a train uncovers the truth about the professor.

11. I Married a Mind Reader
While Allison is sick and resting, her sickness takes over and she dozes off. While dreaming, she's taken into the behind-the-scenes world of the TV show she was watching, "I Married a Mind Reader," which was set it the 1960's. She dreams of the events that sent one of the main characters to jail for murder, but discovers that what appeared to happen might not be the truth.

12. A Priest, a Doctor and a Medium Walk into an Execution Chamber
A high profile drug lord is executed for his crimes, and Allison is on hand to witness the execution. Following the execution Allison is called to the scene of a murder, where witnesses swear the ghost of the drug lord is the killer.

13. Being Mrs. O'Leary's Cow
Vivid images of a plane crash killing everyone on board rock Allison's dreams. She finally locates the pilot, who is holding a dark secret of his own. Eventually, Allison is forced to decide between turning in the killer or saving the lives of hundreds of people.

14. In the Rough
Things go from bad to worse when Allison's mother-in-law comes to visit. A once-closed case is re-opened to try to find out if the convicted person is actually innocent. Things are not as they seem as Allison realizes there could be a set-up involved.

15. Penny for Your Thoughts
A young girl is butchered and Allison is called in to help investigate. Allison is shocked to discover that the killer is possessing innocent people to kill for him. She must now stop him before he takes over more people and leaves more victims in his path.

Allison has a vision of her old acquaintance Captain Push from the Texas Rangers, in connection with a murder. She seeks his help to find a serial killer, who excises his victims' hearts. Capt. Push must go to great lengths to help Allison with her case, putting his life at risk along the way.

Allison is having dreams about an old high school friend and decides to find her. Meanwhile a man seeks the district attorney's help in finding his daughter who has been missing for a week.

6. Dead Aim
Allison helps the district attorney put away a murderer whose lawyer is also using a psychic and at the same time tries to prevent a shooting spree in the D.A.'s Office. Meanwhile, Bridgette figures out that Joe's new project at work isn't what he thinks it is.

7. Judge, Jury & Executioner
Joe serves his jury duty on a case against a man accused of murdering his rich wife. Allison starts having visions about the man but D.A. Devalos orders her not to work on the case because of a conflict of interests.

Allison has a vision that could jeopardize D.A. Devalos' chances for re-election. Meanwhile, Joe runs into an ex-girlfriend from college.

9. Still Life
This episode is partly in 3-D, with the use of 3-D glasses. Allison is lead to an art gallery where she encounters the art of a popular artist. While looking at some of his paintings 3-dimensional images emerge that make her believe that the artist is somehow involved in a crime. Meanwhile, Joe gets a job offer from a former co-worker.

Allison dreams about hitting a girl with her car and a woman whose house is haunted. She finds out that the woman killed herself. Now Allison must try to put all the pieces together.

Allison has problems with staying impartial about a case when she develops maternal feelings for a teenage boy who is accused of killing his former boss. Bridget finds a stray dog and wants to keep it.

Allison helps the District Attorney try to find a missing brother of a close friend. She becomes paranoid about antiterrorist agents from the government. Joe gets uneasy when he suspects that Bridgette might be communicating with a dead author.

1. Four Dreams (1)
Allison's old flame, Clay Bicks, appears at her doorstep moments after dying, unaware that he is dead. When he accepts that fact and will never get to physically be with the woman he loved, he decides he's going to stay in Allison's house so he can at least be close to her. This upsets Joe, and Allison decides that she has to get rid of Clay. Meanwhile, Allison shares a series of odd dreams with Bridgette, except Bridgette's dreams keep coming to her in the form of cartoons.

Allison and Bridgette continue having the same odd dreams as Allison comes closer to figuring out what the dreams mean and how they relate to a series of shootings/killings. Clay still won't leave Allison's house, but his purpose eventually becomes clear and Allison's opinion of him changes. Meanwhile, Devalos' health is evaluated after a rush hospital visit and Scanlon's relationship with the mayor's liaison Lynn takes a turn for the worst.

8. The Whole Truth
Allison is called to help Devalos investigate the shocking death of a well-respected assemblyman, but for some reason she has visions of a young boy trapped in a well mixed in with her visions of the assemblyman. She must figure out what the dreams of the young boy mean because the dreams of the assemblyman alone aren't enough for her to solve the assemblyman's death.

Allison dreams about a strange friendship between two recently murdered ghosts. When she tries to help one of the ghosts solve his murder, she is surprised when he declines her help.

Arliss Howard reprises his role as Texas Ranger, Captain Kenneth Push, who returns to Allison's life when he experiences unnerving visions about a Phoenix-based slaying. Meanwhile, Joe tells a little white lie---and suffers the consequences.

12. The One Behind the Wheel
Allison is possessed by a woman named Sandra ... but Sandra still seems very much alive. Joe and Detective Scanlon try to convince her otherwise, and Joe must hide the truth of what is going on with their mother from the girls.

Allison has a dream that takes place about 20 years in the future in which Marie dies of leukemia. Upon waking up Allison is determined to keep Marie safe no matter what needs to be done. Joe strongly disagrees with Allison's actions and tries to convince her to stay rational. Meanwhile Scanlon investigates the sudden death of a close friend.

Time is of the essence when a disgruntled worker with nothing to lose takes Joe and three others hostage. Allison and Ariel are plagued by an overwhelming feeling of dread, as police mobilize to bring the hostage situation to an end.

Allison investigates the case of a woman's murdered husband. Meanwhile, her brother Michael gets a job as a telephone hotline psychic which leads him to visit a distressed customer in Arizona - the same customer whose case Allison is investigating.

Allison has recurring dreams of her being out in the snow, where she eventually finds a young woman's body. Joe meanwhile returns to work for the first time since the shooting, still trying to deal with the repercussions of the tragedy.

Allison is confused when her dreams of a man murdering his wife keep occurring, even after she helped Devalos convince the jury of the suspected killer's guilt. Through her troubles she manages to make a new friend named Debra. Meanwhile, Joe is frustrated by the therapy sessions that his job enrolled him in, and can't express his feelings to Allison because the recent hostage situation he was in is still greatly affecting him.

The investigation of the murder of Walter Paxton's wife continues, as it is now determined that a serial killer is on the loose. While helping Devalos and Scanlon with the case, Allison discovers that her new friend Debra is the next victim. Allison goes to great lengths to protect Debra, but is shocked to find that her new friend isn't who she thought she was. Meanwhile, Joe debates being part of a lawsuit against Aerodytech, the company he's been loyal to for years.

In the third season finale, Allison's life, along with the lives of her family, is uprooted as her psychic abilities are revealed to the public. Allison must now find a way to catch the "recapitator" serial killer on her own, as she can no longer turn to Devalos or Scanlon for help.

1. And Then
Now that Allison's special abilities have been revealed to the public, everyone's lives have been turned upside down. Allison starts to have dreams about a boy who was kidnapped from a toy store, but is unable to turn to Devalos or Scanlon for help. She decides to call the company hired by the missing boy's family and makes an unusual deal with the company's investigator, Cynthia Keener.

Later on, the employer's daughter disappears, leading Allison to connect her recent dreams about Paris to the disappearance. Now it's up to Allison to save the daughter, which coincidentally will also secure Joe a job.

A young deaf girl is kidnapped, causing Allison to completely lose her hearing. With Allison at a loss, Joe decides to help her and Cynthia Keener investigate the kidnapping.

Larry Watt, a defense attorney who has caused trouble in Allison's past, asks Allison to be a consultant for him. Low on money, Allison accepts his offer. She later has a dream that his client murdered his wife.

Devalos tries to reclaim the D.A.'s office. Allison's support of Devalos is tested when she has visions of Senator Jed Garrity, Devalos' strongest political supporter, involved in a horrible conspiracy.

Joe's mother pays a surprise visit, which worries Allison because she hasn't seen her since her psychic abilities became public knowledge. Meanwhile, Cynthia Keener tries to push Allison's dreams towards outstanding cases and Devalos and Scanlon are reunited with Allison in an unexpected way after an arson-related murder.

A shocking and brutal conclusion awaits Allison and Cynthia as they delve into the decade-old case of the kidnapping and murder of Cynthia's daughter. Meanwhile, Joe tries to get funding for a new invention and Bridgette predicts good fortunes for her dad.

Allison meets Meghan Doyle, Joe's new business partner. Meanwhile, her old car stops working and Joe surprises her with a nice looking used car. The car ends up being the center of a horrible unsolved crime though.

Allison has dreams that help Scanlon in his search to find out who killed a wealthy local drug dealer. Allison and Scanlon are dumbfounded when Allison's dreams lead them to a severely impaired man with a bullet stuck in his brain. Meanwhile, Joe's partnership with Meghan Doyle is put in jeopardy.

In the fourth season finale, Allison tries to help a young couple who thinks their house is haunted, but her efforts result in murder. Meanwhile, Meghan Doyle tries to sell her controlling interest in Joe's invention and Joe tries to save his own stake in it. An unexpected situation occurs between Devalos and Tom Van Dyke and the outcome effects the election for district attorney.

Allison has a dream about a game show that can detect lies, and upon waking up she hears a buzzer in her head whenever someone tells her a lie. Allison's new talent is put to good use during a murder investigation.

Allison suspects that a missing woman may be a victim of her strange children. Meanwhile, Joe's sister Sarah shows up unannounced.

10. Then...and Again
Allison wakes up five years in the past after she and Devalos are gunned down by a strange man. In the past, Allison's dreams tell her that Devalos is going to convict an innocent man of murder. Allison must convince Devalos, who at this point has never met Allison, of her abilities and get him to change his mind about the murder conviction.

A man named Lucas Harvey is stalking Allison, convinced that he's doing the work of God by getting rid of her and her ability. The Dubois family becomes confined to their house, under police supervision, after Harvey becomes a threat to the whole family.

Allison continues to be tormented by Lucas Harvey, her obsessed stalker. Harvey corrupts Allison's dreams, making her unhelpful to Devalos and Scanlon during a serial murderer case.

Allison leaves her job at the D.A.'s office after she's recruited to work for the Lydecker Corporation by another psychic who works there. While enjoying her new job, Allison still regrets leaving the D.A.'s office so suddenly, and has dreams about a serial killer running loose in Phoenix. Meanwhile, extenuating circumstances cause Ariel to start taking pills.

While at her new job at the Lydecker Corporation, Allison shares the dreams she's been having of the serial killer in Phoenix with Devalos and Scanlon. Her new boss finds out though, and tells her that her dreams belong to him and she must stop sharing them with others.

Allison struggles with her decision to switch jobs. When she continues to have visions about a serial killer she is forced to choose between honoring the contract with her new job and sharing her information with the police.

After falling into a coma during an investigation, Allison's spirit finds it's way into the body of a man named Todd Emory. Joe and the kids have to adjust to living with Allison's spirit in the body of Todd, who insists on living with them.

Episode 1: Deja Vu All Over Again
Having come out of her coma, Allison struggles to regain full use of her body. Without Joe's knowledge, she visits Devalos' office, where she is signed back on as a paralegal. She then begins to find that though she hasn't had a psychic dream for months, her skills as a medium are slowly returning and may be of aid in a case currently being investigated. Meanwhile, Joe has quit his previous job, but receives an intriguing offer to pursue work as a "green" engineer.

Episode 2: Who's That Girl
Allison becomes worried after Ariel starts to display strange behavior, and begins to think that a murdered stripper may be possessing her.

Episode 3: Pain Killer
When Allison's friend with cancer suddenly dies she suspects a hospital employee may be at fault. Meanwhile, Bridgette writes a story that closely follows what later happens at Joe's job interview.

Episode 4: The Medium is the Message
Allison is perplexed when she begins to see visions of strange symbols. When a serial killer strikes Phoenix, she discovers that the symbols could be clues to capturing the killer, however she is soon informed that the symbols may simply be a result of her recent brain surgery.

Episode 5: Baby Fever
In the 100th episode, an infant is kidnapped from Allison's neighborhood, and she becomes so determined to find the child that Joe fears she may have become obsessed. Meanwhile, Bridgette attempts to learn how to play the clarinet, but it turns out Marie is a natural.

Episode 6: Bite Me
Allison's nightmares put her in scenes from the classic movie Night of the Living Dead, and cause her to awaken with strange bite marks and cuts, as well as clues related to the murder of a funeral director.

Episode 7: New Terrain
Allison rents an SUV after her car gets damaged; she discovers that the SUV's satellite radio lets her hear other people's conversations.

Episode 8: Once in a Lifetime
When Ariel begins dating a boy from school, Allison has visions that indicate he may be involved in a local murder. Meanwhile, Bridgette finds herself in trouble when she is discovered posting embarrassing videos of a man on the Internet.

Episode 9: The Future's So Bright
After strangely becoming sensitive to light, Allison wears a pair of sunglasses that display strange numbers which may be related to people's life expectancies. Meanwhile, Allison has a disturbing health-related dream about Joe's dad.  

Episode 10: You Give Me Fever
Allison's visions become a vital source of information to the authorities after samples of a deadly disease disappear. Meanwhile, Scanlon thinks he's ready to ask Lynn to marry him, but his plans don't go as smoothly as expected.

Episode 11: An Everlasting Love
The prime suspect in a serial killer case dies, and the police are convinced he's the guilty party. When the dead suspect contacts Allison, he tells her that he's innocent and agrees to help her find the real killer if she will agree to help him give a message to his girlfriend. Allison eventually discovers that she's being tricked by the dead suspect, who has an ulterior motive.

Episode 12: Dear Dad ...
As the anniversary of Devalos' daughter's death come to pass, Devalos is haunted by memories of the traumatic event. Meanwhile, Allison has dreams of the extreme measures Devalos went to to put his daughter's killer in jail, and how Devalos' past actions may have future consequences.

Episode 13: Psych
Allison dreams about a schizophrenic child, but when she meets her in real life, she seems perfectly normal -- but has a mentally ill roomate. Allison must determine if the child is responsible for killing her parents. Meanwhile, Bridgette develops feelings for a boy.

Episode 14: Will the Real Fred Rovick Please Stand Up?
Allison keeps seeing the face of one man in the faces of other people, including Joe, and must figure out why. Meanwhile, Ariel has a difficult time babysitting a mischievous boy.

Episode 15: How to Beat a Bad Guy
Allison enrols herself in self-defense classes. Meanwhile, Devalos works on a teenager's rape case, as well as looking into a suspected murder involving a police officer.

Episode 16: Allison Rolen Got Married
Viewers get a look back at Allison and Joe's wedding, and how the growing strength of Allison's "powers" affected the soon-to-be-married couple.

Episode 17: There Will Be Blood ... Type A
Allison and her daughters share the same dream of a strange girl who may be linked to a string of murders. Meanwhile, Joe has another disagreement with his boss.

Episode 18: There Will Be Blood ... Type B
Allison discovers that the stange girl from her and her daughters' dreams is the serial killer's next target, and she must protect the girl from danger while also trying to work with her to catch the killer. Meanwhile, Joe's work situation takes yet another unexpected turn.

Episode 19: Sal
Allison installs a high-tech talking burglar alarm after a neighbor is murdered, which she later discovers might be communicating with Marie. Also, Ariel interacts with a ghost who might be able to help her get into whichever college she wants.

Episode 20: Time Keeps on Slipping
Ariel somehow loses years of time in her life and must find a way to get back to the present.

Episode 21: Dead Meat
Allison's friendship with a pig could lead to the whereabouts of a missing animal rights activist. Meanwhile, Joe gets a special birthday gift from Marie.

Episode 22: It's a Wonderful Death
In the sixth season finale, Allison's brain tumor returns, which may prove to have major consequences for not only her, but her loved ones as well.

In the seventh season premiere, a missing homeless man is featured in the dreams of Allison and Bridgette, which results in the two switching personalities.

Allison's flashes to the future leave her feeling helpless and powerless to stop an upcoming catastrophic event.

Episode 7: Native Tongue
Allison becomes suddenly unable to understand spoken language, developing a friendship with a linguist along the way. The situation really tries Joe's patience, as he thinks about how many strange situations he's had to put up with during their marriage.

Episode 8: Smoke Damage
A series of mysterious fire-related deaths may be tied to Allison's dreams of a blaze. Allison must also think about where her professional career is headed, as Devalos starts thinking seriously about running for mayor.

Episode 9: The People in Your Neighborhood
Allison's visions about the convicted sex offender new to her neighborhood have her questioning his guilt, even though her neighbors are furious about him moving in. Plus, Joe's potential career opportunity doesn't mesh with Allison's professional future.

Episode 10: Blood on the Tracks
Allison dreams of a murder that involves a man being struck by a train and, when a man is killed just like in her dream, Allison is convinced it's a homicide. Also, Joe has difficulty handling his mother's diagnosis.

Episode 11: Only Half Lucky
While Allison's dream arouses suspicion regarding her brother Michael, Bridgette's abilities pique the interest of Devalos' campaign manager.

Episode 12: Labor Pains
When a woman goes missing, her husband begs Allison for help. On the home front, there's concern when Marie becomes severely distraught during a spelling test.

Episode 13: Me Without You
In the series finale, life for the DuBois family will never be the same after Allison becomes a lawyer and Joe starts on a new career path.
