It was obvious James would stop at nothing to find Cassandra and with her being pregnant with the Witness they was never going to give her up willingly but James meeting his future self was amusing

You can understand why they were sceptical when Ramse returned with Olivia but them not taking any chance with her cage was great but using the machine to torture her was going too far

When Cole discovers who the Witness is I doubt he would kill his own child and would stop anyone else from doing it but Ramse would be willing to kill her without blinking it' lucky for Cassandra that he killed the wrong doctor
