The Knick Season 1 General Discussion Thread (Spoilers)

The Knick Premieres on Cinemax on August 08, 2014

Set in downtown New York in 1900, 'The Knick' is a new Cinemax drama series from Academy Award and Emmy-winning director Steven Soderbergh. It is centered on the Knickerbocker Hospital and the groundbreaking surgeons, nurses and staff who work there, pushing the bounds of medicine in a time of astonishingly high mortality rates and zero antibiotics. Soderbergh directs all 10 episodes of the series' first season.

Academy Award and Emmy nominee Clive Owen stars as Doctor John Thackery, a brilliant surgeon pioneering new methods in the field, despite his secret addiction to cocaine. He leads a team of doctors including his protégé Dr. Everett Gallinger; the young Dr. Bertie Chickering Jr. and Dr. Algernon Edwards, a promising surgeon who's been recently thrust upon him. The lively cast of characters at the hospital also includes Cornelia Robertson, the daughter of its benefactor, Captain August Robertson; surly ambulance driver Tom Cleary; Lucy Elkins; a fresh-faced nurse from the country; the crooked hospital administrator Herman Barrow; and Sister Harriet, a nun who isn't afraid to speak her mind.

Writers of the series are Jack Amiel and Michael Begler ("Raising Helen," "Big Miracle"), who also serve as executive producers, along with Gregory Jacobs ("Behind the Candelabra”), Stephen Soderbergh, Michael Sugar ("Rendition") and Clive Owen. Michael Polaire ("Behind the Candelabra") produces; Steven Katz ("Shadow of the Vampire") is a supervising producer and wrote episodes 5 and 9.

1x01 Method and Madness (Pilot)

The caesarian going wrong in front of an audience was a double tragedy and the surgeon killing himself just added to the tragedy but the ambulance men willing to fight for the patients was amusing, Dr. Algernon Edwards getting a cold reception was predictable for the era

1x02 Mr. Paris Shoes

The nurse dying from electrocution was tragic but as it's new you can expect teething problems especially using water to put out an electrical fire and I'm not surprised Lucy was nervous after injecting cocaine for the doctor, Algernon being able to defend himself was great

Thackery being asked to perform surgery on an ex-lover seemed unethical and his explanation to the proceeder sounded barbaric but Algernon promoting the maid because of her sowing skills was risky

1x04 Where's the Dignity?

Thackery's hands being forced by Algernon during surgery was great as the patents life depended on him helping but what a shame Gallinger didn't break his hand when he punched him

1x06 Start Calling Me Dad

Thackery's new operating-room procedure for pregnant ladies was interesting but the smile on Bertie's face was amusing as they got to test it on the call girls and glad the real procedure worked but trying to find and arrest Typhoid Mary was priceless, Algernon getting caught running his own practice was bound to happen sooner or later
