About the Show:
The lives of the Crawley family and the servants who work for them has been changed forever, since the Great War was declared at the end of the last series.

Promoted to Lord Lieutenant of Yorkshire, Robert has new responsibilities and so does Downton. Although the veritable Mr Carson (Jim Carter) will no doubt be doing his utmost to ensure that standards have not slipped, even in the face of war...

Many of the first series favourites will be joined by a host of new faces, including; Zoe Boyle, who will play Miss Lavinia Swire, Iain Glen as Sir Richard Carlisle, Maria Doyle Kennedy as Vera Bates (wife of John Bates), Amy Nuttall as new Housemaid Ethel and Cal Macaninch joins as Lang, a new Valet.

How will these new characters and the constant threat of the war upset the delicate balance of life at Downton?

Season 1



Episode 1:
The year is 1912 and RMS Titanic has just gone down, taking with it Lord Grantham's heir, James Crawley, and his son, Patrick. A new heir is needed. The country is teetering on the brink of the First World War.

Episode 2:
With the arrival of Matthew Crawley imminent everyone is anxious. Matthew finds it hard to settle into his new life in Downton and his mother Isobel is also soon at odds with Violet. Carson is shocked to be confronted by his past. Gwen has a secret correspondent.

Episode 3:
Cora's efforts to matchmake end up being dashed when Mary ends up not being smitten not by Evelyn Napier, but by his friend, Kemal Pamuk instead. Their attraction ends up sparking a series of events whose consequences end up rippling through the entire household. Bates takes action to help cure his limp.

Episode 4:
After the fair shows up in the village, Mrs Hughes finds herself the main focus of speculation when she meets a former suitor who makes her question her position. Violet and Isobel clash over a medical ailment affecting Molesley. Carson is concerned there is a thief at work in the grounds.

Episode 5:
The village gets ready for the annual flower show and Isobel finds herself at odds with Violet. Mary is introduced to a potential suitor but she wants to be with Matthew. Anna works out who is responsible when a valuable snuff box goes missing. O'Brien plans a way for Edith to take get even with Mary.

Episode 6:
Sybil's ends up putting herself danger when a fight breaks out at an election results meeting. Matthew' feelings towards Sybil are noticed by her sisters, but it is Mary who ends up being surprised to receive a marriage proposal. Bates manages to clear his name over the missing wine but he decides to resign rather than name the real culprit who is responsible.

Episode 7:
News of Cora's pregnancy ends up throwing the inheritance issue into doubt. Mary tells Matthew that he is going to have to wait for an answer to his wedding proposal. O'Brien discovers more compromising information about Bates which he gives to the Earl but he is surprised by his response. Thomas ends up leaving.

Season 2



Episode 1:
The Great War is making life at Downton feeling unsettled. Isobel has some surprising news about Matthew which ends up rocking the family even more. Ethel, a new maid at Downtown, manages to get on the wrong side of O'Brien. Bates returns and gives Anna some news which will change her life.

Episode 2:
It is April, 1917 and with many of the male staff serving in the war, Carson, finds himself under pressure to make that the duties are carried out to his exacting standard. He ends up finding himself be forced to accept help in the dining room from the female staff. Robert needs to hire a new valet and ends up employing Lang, who has just returned from the war. William is happy after he receives an important letter. Mrs Patmore finds out some devastating news about her nephew that shocks her. Thomas begins work alongside Lady Sybil in the local hospital after returning back for the war. After a patient is brought in suffering with gas blindness Thomas finds himself becoming attached to the young Lieutenant. Molesley takes an interest in Anna. Matthew learns of his temporary transfer back to England for a recruitment drive in the north whilst fighting in the trenches. Carson informs Mary that if she still loves Matthew she needs to tell him before it is too late.

Episode 3:
The household are getting ready to become a convalescent home for wounded officers and Isobel is driving Cora mad. O’Brien wants to make sure that Cora is recognised as the boss of Downton and suggests she needs a friend in Thomas. The first group of arrivals show up as does Matthew, who is home on leave. Matthew wants his General, Sir Herbert Strutt to take a look around the new convalescent home. Ethel flirts with Major Bryant and Mrs Hughes is not happy. Violet believes that Mary is still in love with Matthew and with Rosamund's help she discovers that Lavinia is hiding a secret from Matthew. Anna thinks that she has seen Bates and with the help of Lady Mary she discovers Bates is working in a pub and surprises him.

Episode 4:
The household is preparing for a concert at Downton in an effort to try and keep spirits up among the convalescing men. Mary is quizzed by Mary about Carlisle, but Mary refuses to answer her questions. She wants to move on with her life without Matthew. There continues to be tension between Cora and Isobel and Isobel is not happy when she has been over-ruled by Cora. Robert gets a letter from Carlisle, which causes him to worry and there ends up being an uncomfortable conversation between him and Mary. Matthew ends up getting caught with William as they fight on the front line. Mrs Hughes ends up making a surprising discovery that ends in tears for one member of the staff.

Episode 5:
The complete household is shocked when some bad news arrives from the front line. Daisy's relationship with William ends up moving faster than she would like. Mary ends up paying a high price for gettingg Carlisle's assistance after Vera returns to Downton threatening to expose some old secrets.

Episode 6:
An injured Canadian officer arrives Downton to recuperate and everything ends up becoming unsettles. He ends up sharing his secret with Lady Edith. Robert announces that the ceasefire will start on the 11th November. Isobel wants Downton to continue to help the war’s wounded but Cora has other plans. Thomas continues to scheme. Bates gets a mysterious phonecall, which sees him leavung for London. Ethel finds it hard to look after her baby. Mrs Hughes has secretly been helping her but she is discovered by Carson.

Episode 7:
With the war now fully over, will life ever be the same again for everyone at Downton. The family end up being stunned by a new development. Sybil and Branson continue to try and keep their secret. Anna is put in a difficult position by Carlisle. Bates shocked following news about Vera. Thomas starts on a whole new money making scheme.

Episode 8:
As the wedding grows closer there’s excitement in the air but Branson’s plans rattle people. After Spanish Flu reaches Downton, a desperate Thomas attempts to find a way to re-establish himself. After the Bryants return with a heartbreaking proposition, Ethel faces a dilemma. Anna makes Bates think again about their future.
