NBC Picks Up ‘New Normal’ Family Comedy Pilot From Ryan Murphy And Allison Adler

It’s officially a go for NBC’s comedy project from the Glee duo of Ryan Murphy and Allison Adler. The network has given a pilot order to The New Normal, a single-camera project, co-written by Glee co-creator Murphy and Adler and to be directed by Murphy. The Book Of Mormon star Andrew Rannells is set for one of 3 leads in the project, a heartwarming comedy about a blended family of a gay couple and the woman who becomes a surrogate to help them start a family. The comedy had been as close to a sure thing as it could be since NBC landed the pitch in a three-way bidding war with penalty said to be bigger than any other commitment for a half-hour project this season. Murphy and Adler were still writing the first draft when NBC moved on to hire a casting director to explore options for the 3 leads. Rannells was tapped as one of them last week. 20th Century Fox TV is producing, with Murphy, Adler and Ryan Murphy Prods.’ Dante Di Loreto executive producing. The New Normal was one of 2 comedy projects about a gay couple with kids that NBC put in development this season, along with a half-hour written by Peter Tolan starring Sean Hayes. I hear that one is not going forward.

Alias' actor Kevin Weisman joins NBC's 'Awake'

Kevin Weisman has joined the cast of upcoming NBC drama Awake.

The series stars Jason Isaacs as Michael Britten, a cop who lives in two worlds - one in which his wife died in a car crash and another in which his son was killed.

Alias actor Weisman will play 'Mr. Blonde', a mysterious figure who appears in both worlds and holds vital information regarding the accident, according to Entertainment Weekly.

Since Alias concluded in 2006, Weisman has appeared in episodes of Chuck, Fringe and CSI.

Awake has not yet been given a premiere date by NBC. The series temporarily shut down production in late 2011, with executive producer Howard Gordon claiming that the show's writers needed additional time to work on the complex scripts.

Gordon recently insisted that Awake will not confuse viewers, suggesting that it has "a fairly gettable concept".

"[Britten] sees clues and details that cross over from one world to the next, and he uses that insight to solve crimes," he explained. "Whatever learning curve there might be, we hope it's a shallow one."

The Event's Laura Innes and former Law & Order: SVU star BD Wong are among the other actors who have signed up to appear on the show.

Shawnee Smith joins Charlie Sheen sitcom 'Anger Management

Shawnee Smith has joined the cast of Charlie Sheen's new sitcom Anger Management.

Smith was first named as one of a number of actresses being considered for the FX series last week.

The Saw star will play the ex-wife of Sheen's Charlie, a former baseball player turned anger therapist, according to Deadline.

She is believed to have beaten out Dexter's Julie Benz, Work It's Kate Reinders and In Plain Sight's Nichole Hiltz for the role.

A second female lead, to play Charlie's own therapist, has yet to be cast. Hellboy's Selma Blair and 90210's Elaine Hendrix are both rumoured to be up for the part.

Showrunner Bruce Helford recently described Anger Management as a "smarter" comedy, calling Charlie Sheen "a strong actor".

"[Charlie] hasn't had an opportunity to tap into that in a while," he said in October. "But he is capable of playing much more complicated characters."

The series has been picked up for an initial ten-episode run and will premiere on FX in June.

Graham Patrick Martin joins 'Closer' spinoff 'Major Crimes'

Graham Patrick Martin has joined the cast of TNT's forthcoming Closer spinoff Major Crimes.

Major Crimes will star Mary McDonnell as police captain Sharon Raydor and had been picked up for a 10-episode season.

Martin was previously a series regular on TBS sitcom The Bill Engvall Show and has also appeared in episodes of Law & Order: Criminal Intent and Love Bites.

It has been suggested that the supporting cast on The Closer - including Corey Reynolds (Detective Gabriel) Tony Denison (Flynn), G W Bailey (Provenza) and Michael Paul Chan (Tao) - could join McDonnell and Martin on Major Crimes.

"I think that all of us are interested in continuing the storytelling," said Reynolds. "We just have to figure out what way is best to launch the new show."

Major Crimes will debut on TNT in summer 2012. NBC is also developing an unrelated legal drama of the same name.

Steven Cragg and Brian Bradley, writers and producers of Happy Endings and Scrubs, are said to be adapting the classic sitcom for ABC
