Fox Picks Up JJ Abrams 'Alcatraz'; 'Bones' Spinoff 'The Finder', 'The New Girl' & 'I Hate My Teenage Daughter' To Series

Fox has made three new series pickups for next year.  JJ Abrams mystery Alcatraz, Bones spinoff  The Finder and comedy The New Girl starring Zooey Deschanel.  I’m not sure there will be any officially official announcements about them before next Monday’s upfront, but if there are, Bill will post them.

It looks like The Finder got a 13 episode pickup, not sure about the other two yet.

Update: Fox has also ordered comedy I Hate My Teenage Daughter to series.

Fox's 'Breaking In' To Get Another Chance?

Can Breaking In come back from the dead a second time? Well, it is possible. I hear that Fox may reconsider the bombshell Tuesday night cancellation of the midseason comedy starring Christian Slater. Fox is in discussions with Breaking In producer Sony Pictures TV about possible ways to bring the show back next season, though no decision is expected to be made until after the upfronts last week. If it comes back from a second cancellation, Breaking In will become an instant TV legend as I can't think of another show that has done it more than once. For those who don't know the back story, Breaking In was Fox's highest-testing pilot last season but the network ended up passing on it last May, instead giving series orders to Raising Hope, Running Wilde and Traffic Light. Sony TV didn't give up, extending the options on the cast when they expired. Fox proceeded to order additional scripts and eventually picked up the show to series in November. Breaking In debuted strong, with the premiere ranking as the highest-rated Fox live-action comedy telecast in over 3 years with the best lead-in retention for a sitcom airing after American Idol in 4 years. The series, created by Adam Goldberg and Seth Gordon, subsequently slipped but remained consistent and, with such a short midseason run, was considered almost a lock for a second tryout next season

NBC renews 'Parenthood,' 'Harry's Law'

NBC solidly performing family dramedy Parenthood is going to raise a third season.

The network picked up the show for a third round, with fellow bubble show Chuck also looking likely to come back for season five.

Parenthood didn’t do as well this season as its first, averaging 6.7 million viewers and a 2.7 adult demo rating including DVR use, down about 21 percent from last year. Still, that’s good enough for NBC, which along with ABC has had trouble filling its 10 p.m. slots in recent years.

The network also picked up the modestly performing Harry’s Law for a second season. The show had a fairly large audience of 11.6 million viewers, but was weak in the adult demo, averaging 2.3.

UPDATE: ABC Picks Up 7 New Dramas, 5 Comedies

ABC just picked up 7 new drama series, early standouts, Good Christian Bitches, now Good Christian Belles, and Charlie's Angels, as well as Once Upon A Time, Pan Am, Revenge, Shonda Rhimes' Scandal and The River. Some are for midseason.

PREVIOUS: ABC is just now making a flurry of calls to producers. The first confirmed pickups went to comedy frontrunners Apt. 23 and the Tim Allen project, now called again Last Man Standing.

Update: Update: ABC picked up a third new comedy, Chris Moynihan's Man Up.

Update: The last comedy pilots to get the nod at ABC today are Suburgatory and the cross-dressing Work It. Another buzzed about pilot, Smothered, has not been picked up but remains in contention. Among those that are not moving forward is Other People's Kids.

ABC Renews 'Happy Endings

What an appropriate title this turned out to be! Despite soft ratings for its midseason freshman run, ABC's comedy Happy Endings will come back next season after the network just renewed it. This is not a surprise as the ensemble relationship comedy has had big support internally at the network

YABBA DABBA DOO! Seth MacFarlane Finally Gets Go-Ahead To Reboot 'The Flintstones'

EXCLUSIVE: Seth MacFarlane is one of the busiest creatives in show business -- and he just got a lot busier. I've just learned that he's finally realized one of his life's ambitions: to reboot The Flintstones as a TV and film property. My scoop today follows years of very complicated negotiations between 20th Century Fox TV, where McFarlane is based, and Warner Bros Television, which owns the rights to the series after absorbing The Flintstones' famed producer Hanna-Barbera. Not only did the suits have a ton of deal points to work through, but I hear the "Yabba Dabba Doo" prehistoric family sitcom's rightholders were somewhat concerned how the classic series would be interpreted given MacFarlane's brand of raunchy comedies like The Family Guy. So here are all the Hollywood players who had to unentangle this mess: MacFarlane's attorney Jim Jackoway, WME's Ari Emanuel and Greg Hodes; 20th Century Fox TV's Gary Newman, Ira Kurghan, and Howard Kurtzman; And Warner Bros Television's Peter Roth, Brett Paul and even Bruce Rosenblum. There's no broadcast date as of yet, but the reboot will air on Fox.

CBS Starts Making Seies Orders Too

What a day! CBS just joined the pickup frenzy. The network is making its calls to producers at the moment and the first to get one was non other than J.J. Abrams, whose Person of Interest has been picked up to series. The crime drama written by Jonah Nolan had been building momentum, recently emerging as the frontrunner at the network on the drama side.

Update: Also picked up is the Michael Patrick King/Whitney Cummings comedy Two Broke Girls. While Cummings will do her new NBC comedy series, which is in first position, King, whose NBC drama pilot A Mann's World didn't go forward, is expected to be full-time on the comedy series, probably co-running it with another comedy writer-producer.

Update: Sarah Michelle Gellar's 'The Ringer' To Get Picked Up By CW, Sarah Michelle Gellar is returning to primetime as her CBS pilot Ringer is being picked up to series. But in a surprising move, the series is going to CBS' sibling CW

Update: CBS just picked up another new drama series, the untitled Susannah Grant medical drama, now titled A Gifted Man. Produced by CBS TV Studios, it stars Patrick Wilson as ultra-competitive surgeon Michael, whose life is changed forever when his ex-wife Anna dies and begins teaching him what life is all about from the hereafter. The Gifted Man joins dramas The 2-2 (aka Rookies), Unforgettable (now The Rememberer) and David Hornsby's comedy How To Be a Gentleman, picked up earlier today; and drama Person of Interest and comedy Two Broke Girls, which were ordered Friday

CW Picks Up 'Secret Circle', 'Hart Of Dixie', 'Ringer' & 'H8ERa

The CW has officially picked up the Sarah Michelle Gellar drama pilot Ringer, which was originally produced for CBS, along with early frontrunners Secret Circle and Hart of Dixie. On the unscripted side, as expected, CW has picked up series H8ER, which pairs celebrities with their haters. The pickups for Secret Circle and Hart of Dixie brings the number of CW series from producers Kevin Williamson and the duo of Josh Schwartz & Stephanie Savage to two each. The Vampire Diaries co-creator Williamson co-wrote the witch tale The Secret Circle with Andrew Miller, based on the Alloy books and starring Britt Robertson. And Gossip Girl co-creators Schwartz and Savage are executive producing the small-town medical drama Hart of Dixie, written by Leila Gerstein and starring Rachel Bilson. Ringer, written by Eric Charmelo and Nicole Snyder, stars Gellar as a girl on the run from the mob who assumes the identity of her twin sister. Ringer is from CBS TV Studios, Hart of Dixie and Secret Circle from Warner Bros TV, and H8ER from Warner Horizon. All scripted series will now be co-productions between Warner Bros TV and CBS Studios.

Update: One Tree Hill & Nikita have both been renewed.
