Pine plays down 'Green Lantern' rumours

Chris Pine has played down speculation that he is being considered for the lead role in Green Lantern.

According to IESB.net, the Star Trek actor is among the frontrunners to land the part of pilot-turned-superhero Hal Jordan in Martin Campbell's upcoming live-action adaptation.

Speaking to MTV News, Pine said: "I had a meeting with [casting director] Pam Dixon and [executive producer] Donald De Line, but a meeting was all it was. I have not been offered squat. I do not have the part and haven’t read a script."

He added: "I'm not a big comic book fan... I'm a fan of stories, so if there's a story to be told, I love to tell a good story. But, there's not a particular superhero or comic book character that I'd like to play."

Other potential candidates reportedly include Terminator Salvation star Sam Worthington, while Mad Men's John Hamm and Firefly actor Nathan Fillion were allegedly ruled out for being the wrong age.

Green Lantern is scheduled to begin production in Australia later this year, with a December 17, 2010 release date.

Rodriguez Gives Away All Her 2009 Movie Endings

Spoiler Alert: Michelle Rodriguez has hit out at movie bosses for always killing off her characters - revealing she dies in every film she's in this year.

Rodriguez's rant is set to infuriate film fans and the directors of Fast and Furious, Avatar and Trópico de Sangre, the three films Rodriguez stars in in 2009.

But she insists she's striking a blow for women in Hollywood.

Rodriguez tells Latina.com, "Anytime you've got a wild, independent, free-spirited woman, she has to die at the end of the movie, unless it's a movie that's so sci-fi that it can't be real, like Tomb Raider.

"Me? I die in every film that I'm in this year. They're just gonna have to keep on killing me. I'll keep coming back, until they realise what's hot and make flicks for b**ches like me."

Fast and Furious hits movie theatres in the U.S. on Friday; Tropico de Sangre, which marks Rodriguez's debut as a movie producer, and James Cameron's Avatar are due for release later in 2009.

'Fast & Furious' grosses huge $30.1 mil on Friday, on pace to shatter box office records

Fast & Furious started off the weekend in shocking fashion, earning an astonishing $30.1 million at the box office on Friday. By comparison, the highly anticipated Watchmen banked a smaller $25.1 mil on its first day. (Yes, the sound you hear right now is jaws dropping all around Hollywood.) The weekend's other big new movie, Adventureland, had a hard time getting its motor running, grossing just $2.2 mil on the first day of the frame. Friday's rankings are below, and please check back here tomorrow for a full weekend recap in the Box Office Report.

1. Fast & Furious -- $30.1 mil

Fox Diced With Death In Bhutan

Michael J. Fox almost lost his life and a finger while shooting a new documentary about optimism in the Himalayan kingdom of Bhutan - after falling down a mountain.

The actor travelled to the tiny nation, dubbed the happiest place on earth, to discover if the region deserved its cheery reputation.

Fox was stunned to discover his Parkinson's Disease symptoms were eased in the high altitude state - which sits at 11,000 feet (3,352 metres) above sea level.

He says, "It turned out great for me. My Parkinson's symptoms were much less at that altitude, to the extent that I was taking much less medication, and having fewer side effects to the medication. So I was bopping around and hopping through the rice paddies."

But he admits he got carried away with his burst of health, and almost tumbled off a cliff.

The 47-year-old explains, "There was this monastery up in a cliff. You had to hike up to it. Because I was feeling so good, I thought, yeah I can climb up there. We hiked up to this place. I was feeling so good and so cocky about how great I felt and about how I could climb up there. I started to walk down the mountain, and five minutes down I started to wipe out. I just started running and I couldn't stop.

"I was going, 'I'm going to die. I'm not a yak. I can't stop.' I had to throw myself to ground before I reached the cliff. I cut my arm up and cut my ring finger badly.

"On the way back we stopped in Kathmandu and I saw a doctor, and he said, 'If we don't get this ring off, you're going to lose your finger.'

"So I went to a hospital in Delhi and they couldn't get the ring off. There were 15 doctors with bone saws and knives and explosives, and they couldn't get it off.

"It took the janitor to get it off with his industrial strength tool."

Box Office Report: 'Fast & Furious' shatters records with $72.5 mil weekend

In the first truly shocking box office result of the year, Fast & Furious sped away from expectations to gross a humongous $72.5 mil, according to early estimates from Media by Numbers. That result is effectively double what most industry observers had predicted for the debut of the fourth feature in Vin Diesel's car franchise, and it left in the dust a number of notable records:

* Best April opening ever, beating Anger Management's $42.2 mil
* Best Universal Pictures opening ever (three-day), beating The Lost World: Jurassic Park's $72.1 mil
* Best F&F franchise opening ever, beating 2 Fast 2 Furious' $50.5 mil
* Best opening yet in 2009, easily beating the bows of the more-buzzed-about Monsters vs. Aliens ($59.3 mil) and Watchmen ($55.2 mil)
* Best opening ever for stars Diesel, Paul Walker, Michelle Rodriguez, and Jordana Brewster, as well as for director Justin Lin

Oh, and let's not forget that it was the best opening ever for a car-themed movie! (Beating Cars' $60.1 mil.) This outcome is impressive, indeed, something that has caught Hollywood by surprise and has the potential to really change things up -- like when summer-esque blockbusters are released (rarely does one open so early in the year) and like, you know, what everyone thinks of Vin Diesel. The film did it all on the strength of a solid A- CinemaScore review from an audience that was 57 percent male and 59 percent over age 25. Like the jaw-dropping early-year debuts of The Passion of the Christ and 300 before it, this is a history-making premiere that you may well be hearing about for a long time to come.

So, yeah, I almost forgot to mention: Fast & Furious was the No. 1 movie at the box office this weekend. Coming in strong at No. 2 was Monsters vs. Aliens, which dropped a respectable 44 percent to earn $33.5 mil. In 10 days, the 3-D extravaganza has banked $105.7 mil.

The Haunting in Connecticut (No. 3 with $9.6 mil), Knowing (No. 4 with $8.1 mil), and I Love You, Man (No. 5 with $7.9 mil) rounded out the top five. And the weekend's other big new release, Adventureland, struggled with $6 mil at No. 6.

Overall, the box office was up a monstrous 68 percent from the same frame a year ago, when holdover 21 outplayed a number of weak new movies, none of which had Vin Diesel...whom you're going to start hearing a lot about, once again.

Fox nearly died filming documentary

Michael J. Fox has revealed that he thought he may die while filming a documentary about optimism in the "happiest place" on earth.

The actor was in the Himalayan kingdom of Bhutan to find out for himself if the nation lived up to its reputation when he nearly fell down a mountain visiting a hilltop monastery, reports WENN.

Fox, 47, suffers from Parkinson's Disease and said he was amazed to find his symptoms were eased in the state, which lies 11,000ft above sea level.

"We hiked up to this place. I was feeling so good and so cocky about how great I felt and about how I could climb up there," he said. "I started to walk down the mountain, and five minutes down I started to wipe out. I just started running and I couldn't stop.

"I was going, 'I'm going to die. I'm not a yak. I can't stop'. I had to throw myself to the ground before I reached the cliff. I cut my arm up and cut my ring finger badly."

A doctor in Kathmandu said Fox would lose his finger if his wedding band was not removed. The ring was eventually freed in a Delhi hospital.

Cruise lining up 'Butch Cassidy' remake

Tom Cruise is reportedly planning a remake of the 1969 Western Butch Cassidy And The Sundance Kid.

The actor was apparently given Paul Newman's blessing for the project ahead of his death from cancer last year.

According to the Daily Express, John Travolta, 55, has been lined up to reprise Newman's Cassidy in the remake, which will be produced through Cruise's United Artists studio.

Cruise, 46, wants to take on the role of Robert Redford's Sundance, which is said to be one of his favourite cinematic performances.

"Butch and Sundance is a labour of love for Tom," a source said. "He was eight years old when he saw the original and it made an impression that has stayed with him all his life. He can't wait to get to work."

The original film, which follows the exploits of bank robbers Cassidy and Sundance, was directed by George Roy Hill and is said to be based loosely on fact. It won four Oscars at the 1970 Academy Awards, including those for best screenplay and cinematography.

Corbett 'would jump at SATC cameo'

Former Sex And The City star John Corbett has revealed that he would love to land a role in the sequel to last year's blockbuster movie.

The actor, who played Carrie Bradshaw's boyfriend Aidan Shaw in the HBO series, told Access Hollywood that he is eager for the chance to reunite with his former castmates, but admitted that the likelihood of making a cameo is slim.

"If something came my way, I’d jump on it. But I think Aidan’s come and gone from that show. I think it’s really more about the girls and Carrie and Big now, so I don’t think there’s a place for him in there," he explained.

He added: "I love all those people. I had a great time working on that show."

Sex And The City 2 is slated to begin filming this summer, with a scheduled May 28, 2010 release date.

That's quite fascinating.  I never knew that altitude could affect Parkinson's symptoms.  Too bad the altitude has to be quite so high, as there aren't many places one could live.  It would be wonderful if that information helps researchers have a better understanding of the disease and how it affects the brain.
