Damian Lewis Cast As The Male Lead In Showtime's Pilot 'Homeland'

EXCLUSIVE: Showtime's drama pilot Homeland has assembled a pretty solid cast. Former Life star Damian Lewis has been tapped to star opposite Claire Danes in the pilot from 24 executive producers Howard Gordon and Alex Gansa. Lewis will play the male lead in the project, which centers on Marine Sergeant Scott Brody (Lewis), who returns home after spending eight years as a prisoner of war in Baghdad, and Carrie Anderson (Claire Danes), a driven CIA officer who suspects he might be plotting an attack on America. Scott, who was discovered during a U.S. attack on an enemy base, was brought to the U.S. with much fanfare and is happy to be home with his family, wife Jessica (Laura Fraser), and two kids, but still carries with him the trauma of his imprisonment and torture. Lewis, a British screen and stage actor, is best known in the U.S. for his roles in the NBC quirky drama Life and HBO's Emmy-winning World War II mini-series Band of Brothers.

Also cast in Homeland is another British actor, David Harewood (Blood Diamond). He will play David Estes, the the youngest Deputy Director of Intelligence in CIA history, decisive, political, professional, but ultimately self-serving who is frequently exasperated by Carrie's obsessive determination to follow up any lead, no matter how small or politically inconvenient. Production on the pilot, whose cast also includes Mandy Patinkin, is slated to begin Jan. 10 in Charlotte, N.C.?

Starz has announced that it will preview new medieval drama Camelot two months before the show's official premiere.

Earlier this month, it was announced that the series, which stars Joseph Fiennes and Eva Green, will debut on April 1.

However, network sources have confirmed to The Futon Critic that the pilot episode will air on February 25, following the finale of mini-series Spartacus: Gods of the Arena.

The full 64-minute premiere will air, beginning at 11/10c. The series will then formally launch in April at 10/9c, as previously announced.

Camelot will air 10 episodes as part of its first series. Later in 2011, Channel 4 will broadcast the show in the UK.

Wonder Woman Reboot Shelved

Warner Bros. Television’s high-profile Wonder Woman reboot is going to be much like the superheroine’s signature jet: invisible.
As reported by Deadline.com’s Nellie Andreeva, David E. Kelley’s contemporary take on the iconic franchise has been shelved after all five broadcast networks passed on his script.

Last month, Kelley — best known for law shows like Ally McBeal, The Practice and Boston Legal — acknowledged to Zap2it that, “It’s a very, very different genre for me, a very tricky beast. I won’t know whether I’ve cracked it or not until I’ve finished it, but it’s going… If I can’t, I don’t want to delude Warner Bros. or anybody else that I should be doing it.

The way I’ve always worked has been to write a script and discover, in the process of the writing, if it’s a fertile and creative place where I want to live. If I feel I can make the characters my own and it’s a world rich enough for me to revisit, that’s a good sign to me that it’s a series worth doing.”

Breaking: ABC Renews Grey's, Castle and Four More – But Not Housewives

ABC kicked off its portion of the Television Critics Association midseason press tour by breaking a little news: The network has officially renewed six series — Grey’s Anatomy, Private Practice, Castle, Modern Family, The Middle and Cougar Town — through next season.

Conspicuously missing from the pickup list are Sunday staples Desperate Housewives and Brothers & Sisters. Although DH creator Marc Cherry has a deal in place for two more seasons, the show’s core quartet — Teri Hatcher, Felicity Huffman, Marcia Cross and Eva Longoria — will see their contracts expire at the end of the current season. As EW reported earlier this month, negotiations are already underway on new pacts that would keep them on Wisteria Lane for another season or two.

Brothers & Sisters, meanwhile, remains firmly on the bubble. Encouraging ratings this fall led ABC to increase the drama’s episode order from 18 to 22, but insiders say there’s a 50/50 chance the Walkers will bow out in May.

Cougar Town‘s pickup comes as the Courtney Cox comedy is about to relinquish its time slot to Matthew Perry’s Mr. Sunshine. ABC president Paul Lee told reporters at press tour this morning that he’s pleased with the show’s creative direction and ratings performance, but added that the cushy post-Modern Family perch serves as a “great launch pad for [new shows]… But we’re very pleased with [Cougar Town]. It’s really found its voice.”

ABC Family Renews Pretty Little Liars, Secret Life

Got a secret, can you keep it? (Sorry, I couldn’t resist.)

Exciting news out of ABC Family’s TCA press tour: Megasuccessful freshman series Pretty Little Liars has officially been picked up for a second season!
And that’s not all…

In addition to the breakout hit’s much-anticipated renewal, ABC Family announced a fourth season pickup for The Secret Life of the American Teenager, which returns March 28 with new episodes.

Now back to that PLL goodness–those of us at TCA this morning were treated to a special sneak peek of next Monday’s episode and all I can say is Oh. My. Gosh. Here’s what you should know about the episode’s spine-tingling final scene: “A” sends the girls a video of what might just be Alison’s final moments…alive. Oh, and who exactly was there during her untimely death? He or she may be in the death-o-gram, too.

Breaking: Fox Renews Raising Hope

Raising Hope is one step closer to the terrible twos: Fox has renewed the rookie family comedy for a second season.

The pickup was formally announced this morning at the network’s portion of the Television Critics Assoc. midseason Press Tour.

The critically acclaimed Hope, which was the first new series to receive a full-season green light back in October, has been a welcome bright spot for Fox this fall. The network’s other two freshman entries, Lone Star and Running Wilde, have already been cancelled.
