Charlie Sheen cast as US President in Robert Rodriguez's Machete Kills

Charlie Sheen has been cast in Robert Rodriguez's Machete Kills.

The former Two and a Half Men actor will play the President of the United States in the Grindhouse movie sequel starring Danny Trejo and Michelle Rodriguez.

Robert posted a photo of himself with Sheen on Twitter, writing: "I just cast Charlie Sheen in ?#machetekills? as the President of the United States! Who better? More soon..."

Sheen retweeted the news, with the introduction: "My Fellow Americans!"

Mel Gibson joined the film earlier this year as an eccentric billionaire arms dealer hell-bent on launching a deadly missile.

Jessica Alba, Zoe Saldana and Amber Heard have also signed up for the movie.

Sheen is currently promoting his new FX sitcom Anger Management, loosely based on the 2003 Jack Nicholson film of the same name.

The 48-year-old has claimed that he plans to retire from acting after he finishes Anger Management.

"At some point you just get tired of wearing somebody else's clothes, saying somebody else's words and working in somebody else's space," he said.

Anger Management debuts on Thursday, June 28 at 9pm ET on FX.

Transformers 4' is not a reboot, says Michael Bay

Michael Bay has insisted that Transformers 4 is "not a reboot".

The director explained that the film will have an entirely new cast and a "new direction", but will still build on the three previous movies.

The fourth outing of the franchise will also have a smaller budget than previous instalments, with about $30 million (£19 million) less to spend than Transformers: Dark of the Moon.

"It's not a reboot," Bay told the Los Angeles Times. "That's maybe the wrong word.

"I don't want to say 'reboot' because then people will think we're doing a Spider-Man and starting from the beginning. We're not.

"We're taking the story that you've seen - the story we've told in three movies already - and we're taking it in a new direction. But we're leaving those three as the history. It all still counts... We're moving on to something different."

Bay also hinted that the film may partially be set in space.

"That feels like the way to go, doesn't it?" he said. "I want to go a little off [the planet] but I don't want to go too sci-fi. I still want to keep it grounded."

The director has already said that the fourth Transformers film will be his last.

The movie is scheduled for release on June 29, 2014.

Philip Seymour Hoffman 'signs for Hunger Games sequel Catching Fire'

Philip Seymour Hoffman has signed a deal to appear in The Hunger Games sequel Catching Fire, reports have claimed.

The Academy Award-winning actor, who was first linked with the role of Plutarch Heavensbee last month, is now believed to have formally committed to the movie.

"The deal was made right before the Fourth of July holiday," an insider claimed to E! News.

Heavensbee takes over as the new Gamemaker in Catching Fire following the demise of Seneca Crane (Wes Bentley).

Catching Fire is due to start filming this autumn with Francis Lawrence replacing Gary Ross as director.

Jennifer Lawrence, Josh Hutcherson and Liam Hemsworth will reprise their roles from the first movie.

James Bond director: 'Henry Cavill could be a future 007'

GoldenEye and Casino Royale director Martin Campbell has said that Henry Cavill could potentially play James Bond in the future.

Man of Steel star Cavill auditioned for the 007 role in 2005, eventually losing out to Daniel Craig. Campbell told The Express that Craig had the edge thanks to his turn as a gangster in Layer Cake.

Henry did a great screen test for Bond. So did Daniel, although he arrived for his looking really tired after a night flight from America where he was finishing up a movie called The Invasion," Campbell said.

"None of us making the casting decision were 100% sure. I needed a couple of days to think about it. Over that weekend I saw Daniel's film Layer Cake and he showed such terrific charm in that that it convinced me he should get the part."

Campbell suggested that Cavill could follow in the footsteps of Pierce Brosnan, who screen tested to play Bond for The Living Daylights but lost the role to Timothy Dalton when his TV series Remington Steele was renewed.

"Perhaps Henry Cavill was too young for it then, he was 22 at the time we auditioned for Casino Royale, but maybe he could still be James Bond in the future," he said. "After all, Pierce Brosnan did a great screen test only to eventually get the part years later."

The new James Bond movie Skyfall will open in cinemas this October. A 'Designing 007 - Fifty Years of Bond Style' exhibition is currently running at London's Barbican Centre through September 5.

Dredd': Alex Garland lines up sequels

Alex Garland has revealed plans for a Dredd trilogy.

The director said at the London Film and Comic Con that a sequel to his Judge Dredd film will be made if the first takes enough money in the US, reports Bleeding Cool.

We'll see a sequel if the gross is above $50 million (£32 million) in the US," said Garland. "It's a simple financial equation. We're an independent movie."

He explained that he had formerly planned to include Judge Death and his fellow Dark Judges in the film, but was forced to reject the idea "after about 16 drafts".

"I needed to have set up the city and Dredd first before taking on what is essentially a riff on the Judges," he said. "You need to know what the Judges are before you can subvert them.

"I wrote a second script which was about Dredd going out to the Cursed Earth. That was rejected for similar reasons.

"If they want to make sequels, I've got a story that goes from this one into the origins of Dredd and the city. Then the third one would have a strange, existential attack from the Dark Judges."

Dredd stars Karl Urban, Lena Headey and Olivia Thirlby. It will debut in cinemas on September 21

Independence Day 2' has a worthy concept, says writer Dean Devlin

Independence Day co-writer and producer Dean Devlin has revealed that a "worthy concept" for a sequel has been written.

Two sequels to the 1996 sci-fi blockbuster were announced by Fox to be in the pipeline back in October.

Devlin explained that he has begun working with Roland Emmerich on the next instalment, and that the brainstorming process has been a fruitful one.

"I can tell you that Roland and I have been working together for the first time in 11 years and we're very excited about the idea of doing it," Devlin told The Hollywood Reporter.

"Whether or not we can make this happen, if we can get all the pieces to come together, that's gonna be challenging. But creatively, for the very first time since we did the original, I feel we have a worthy concept, a worthy path to go."

On writing a sequel, he said: "We resisted doing the sequel for years because we still wanted to honour the first one. The first one gave us all careers and we really love that movie and loved the experience.

"We didn't want to make a movie because it was financially a good idea, we only wanted to do it when we had an idea and a concept that creatively felt like it honoured the first one - that it felt like an organic sequel as opposed to, 'Let's just go make some more money'.

"I feel like we got it. I think it took a long time, but I feel like we finally got something that really feels like, 'That's worth seeing as a sequel to Independence Day'."

Devlin added that he has begun contacting the original film's actors for possible comebacks, including the likes of Will Smith, Jeff Goldblum and Bill Pullman.

"We're beginning a long process of talking to everybody. We'll just have to see what happens," he said.

The original Independence Day will be re-released in 3D on July 3, 2013.

To date, the film has grossed worldwide takings of over $800 million (£498 million).
