Jerry Bruckheimer: 'Ranger won't be star'

Jerry Bruckheimer has revealed that the actor who will play the Lone Ranger in the forthcoming film about the masked hero will not be an existing box office star.

The producer told Los Angeles Times that he will be casting someone less established than Johnny Depp, who will play sidekick Tonto.

He said: "You want somebody who can do the humour and somebody who's attractive and charismatic. But I think it will be somebody who's not that well known. That's my guess."

Bruckheimer added that the film will succeed against expectations, like Pirates of the Caribbean, and that it is "time" to bring the Western back.

Armie Hammer, who played the Winklevoss twins in The Social Network, is currently favourite to play the lead in the Disney reboot of the franchise which began in the 1930s with a comic serial.

The new film will be a humourous take on the classic picaresque novel Don Quixote but will also do justice to the maligned Native American character Toto, according to Depp.

Vin Diesel: 'Fast & Furious 5 deserves Oscar

Vin Diesel has said that he sees no reason why his new film Fast & Furious 5 would not be a contender at next year's Academy Awards.

Diesel reunited with original Fast and the Furious stars Paul Walker and Jordana Brewster for the fifth entry in the franchise, and claimed that he feels the film is worthy of some recognition.

"I wouldn't be surprised if there is some Oscar talk around this," Diesel told the Los Angeles Times. "I don't know, maybe I'm just biting off what some guy from Channel 7 thought."

Diesel added that he believes films like Fast & Furious 5 are often discriminated against by critics and award ceremonies because they appeal to a different type of audience.

"But sooner or later people are gonna say, 'Wait a minute, just because they are for the working class doesn't mean they're not great'," Diesel added.

The Justin Lin-directed film broke Universal's box office records when it opened two weekends ago, taking $83.6 million (£51.1m) domestically in its first weekend.

The director recently confirmed that a sixth Fast and the Furious movie is already in the works

Will Ferrell 'doesn't get Anchorman 2 delay

Will Ferrell has confessed that he is unsure why Anchorman 2 has not been greenlit by Paramount Studios.

The sequel has gone through several rounds of stalled negotiations, leading Ferrell to say that while it could still happen, fans should not get their hopes up as it is unlikely that the film will get made.

In an interview with PopEater, the actor and star of the 2004 comedy expressed his frustration at the lack of progress made on the follow-up as there has been considerable interest from the public.

"Yeah, I don't understand how [Paramount] conduct their business. It's funny I think they... actually I don't know what they think," he said. "Once again, they don't comment either way but it's not like it's coming from us unsolicited... We try to explain there's so much interest in a sequel, we're not making this up!"

Ferrell went on to reveal that he may reteam with John C. Reilly for a follow-up to his Sony Pictures comedy Step Brothers in the near future.

"We've had a wonderful working relationship with [Sony]. We might do it. We're talking about trying to potentially do it," he said.

"We're just kind of two kindred souls. We were probably brothers in a past life. We just kind of click with our comedic sensibility. It really comes down to the basic thing of thinking the same thing is funny and we totally do."

Ferrell was recently announced as the recipient of the 2011 Mark Twain Prize for American Comedy.
