Ryan Gosling, Bradley Cooper for new film?

Ryan Gosling and Bradley Cooper are reportedly teaming up for a new film from Blue Valentine director Derek Cianfrance.

According to Variety, Cianfrance has now found a backer for his new project, The Place Beyond the Pines, in the form of Sidney Kimmel Entertainment, and is looking to finalise casting details.

Star Trek 2 production starts soon,' says Abrams

J.J. Abrams has confirmed that work on the sequel to Star Trek will begin soon now that production on his upcoming thriller Super 8 has finished.

Abrams revealed that work on the film was finally beginning to get under way, and that although a script is yet to be finalised, the team are definitely "working on it".

"The truth is that my focus has been so much on finishing Super 8 that it's been something I'm looking forward to getting to, but with an incredibly compressed post schedule, there hasn't been a whole lot of time for me to be working with the writers," Abrams explained to MTV News.

"Now that Super 8 is drawing to a close in terms of this post schedule, I'm looking forward to jumping in and hopefully getting that ready as soon as possible."

Abrams praised the film's writing team, which consists of Star Trek writers Roberto Orci and Alex Kurtzman as well as Lost co-creator Damon Lindelof, for helping to keep the sequel on track.

"These are not just great friends of mine, but they're great writers," Abrams added. "I'm thrilled and very optimistic that it's going to get where it needs to get to."

It is currently unknown whether Abrams will direct the film as he did with 2009's Star Trek, or simply serve as producer on the project.

Star Trek 2 is scheduled to reach cinemas on June 29, 2012.

Stephen King's 'Dark Tower' adaptation in doubt

Ron Howard's adaptation of Stephen King's Dark Tower series is reportedly in jeopardy over concerns about the project's budget.

Universal Pictures had planned to release a trilogy of films, separated by two television miniseries, in an effort to fully adapt King's seven-novel series.

However, studio executives are said to have started rethinking their plans, and may decide to put the project into turnaround.

Variety reports that Universal may put the project on hold to allow producers Imagine Entertainment to source another studio to help with financing, or may even cancel the project altogether.

The studio recently pulled out of producing Guillermo del Toro's proposed adaptation of At the Mountains of Madness over similar concerns stemming from the film's expected $150 million budget.

Last month it was reported that Javier Bardem was close to signing on to the project as lead character Roland Deschain.

The Dark Tower had been due to begin production this September for a launch in 2013

Colin Farrell: 'Total Recall remake is darker

Colin Farrell has said that the remake of classic sci-fi film Total Recall will be much "darker" in tone and less camp than the original.

Farrell stars in the remake as a construction worker who discovers a company that implants false memories, and has insisted that although the film will have many of the same characters, it won't feel the same as its 1990 predecessor.

"The film, tonally, is really different," Farrell revealed to IGN. "I loved the original and I've seen it recently and it's still great."

"But it's really camp," he added, before explaining that the remake will remove the more tongue-in-cheek aspects of the Schwarzenegger-starring film. "It's quite a bit darker.

"I say this not in a disparaging way, but there's not as many kind of winks to the audience, it's played a lot more straight."

When asked how the film was progressing, Farrell claimed that of the visuals he had seen so far, it was going to be "incredible".

Earlier this month, it was confirmed that Breaking Bad star Bryan Cranston had been cast as the film's villain Vilos Cohaagen, while Kate Beckinsale is in line to play Quaid's wife Lori.

Matt Damon chooses script for directorial debut

Matt Damon has reportedly decided on a script for his debut as a film director.

Deadline claims that Damon is interested in both starring in and helming the film attached to Matthew Aldrich's much-hyped script for Father Daughter Time: A Tale of Armed Robbery and Eskimo Kisses.

Warner Bros are in the process of finalising a deal for the rights to the script, after a heated bidding war in Hollywood that also involved offers from Paramount Pictures and Fox.

"The script is not high concept, it's a smallish, very personal, dark but playful road movie about a father and daughter," Aldrich said.

Warner Bros are also allegedly keen to produce the film through Damon's own production company Pearl Street.

The project will be Damon's first as director, although he both starred in and co-wrote the Academy Award-winning film Good Will Hunting in 1997.

Damon will next be seen in the Kenneth Lonergan drama Margaret, the Steven Soderbergh thriller Contagion and Cameron Crowe's new comedy We Bought a Zoo.

Nick Frost 'wants more serious roles

Nick Frost has revealed that he hopes to take on more serious roles, such as portraying historic figures.

The actor, who is currently starring in Attack the Block, told BBC News that he finds non-comic characters more rewarding to portray.

"I've always been funny as a kid, so it's not a challenge to me to be funny. It's the other stuff that's difficult, so I like to challenge myself," he explained.

Frost also revealed that his favourite role to date was as the protagonist in last year's TV adaptation of Money by Martin Amis.

"That's my favourite of everything I've done," the actor said. "We're trying to work on something similar, but I can't say any more."

He added: "I'm waiting for a Winston Churchill or a Henry VIII - I think you have to go with the physicality of your actor.

"I'm a bit too young for Churchill, but 20 more years and I'll be almost 60, and in ripe Churchill territory. And I could do the Bob Hoskins biopic in 20 years!"
