'Fast' movies to become "heist action

The Fast series will move away from street racing and focus more on heists in future instalments of the franchise.

Universal Studios chairman Adam Fogelson also called Fast Five (aka Fast & Furious 5) a "transitional movie".

Fogelson told Deadline: "We've heard so many people say, 'I've never seen [a Fast film], and I've never wanted to see one'.

"So if these movies were still about street racing, there was probably a ceiling on how many people would buy tickets. We wanted to see if we could raise it out of about racing and make car driving ability just a part of the movie, like those great chases in The French Connection, The Bourne Identity [and] The Italian Job."

In addition, Fogelson revealed that Dwayne 'The Rock' Johnson, who plays an elite DSS agent tasked with tracking down Dom Toretto (Vin Diesel) in Fast Five, wants to be involved in the already-announced sequel.

As for how the series will move forward, Fogelson teased: "We've absolutely left perfect room for where we want to go with this franchise.

"I don't want to give away too much, but there are a lot of surprises at the end of Fast Five involving one of the biggest characters of the previous movies which will set up the franchise now as a series of heist action films."

Fast Five opens in the US on April 29 and is already out in the UK

Will Ferrell confirms 'Anchorman 2' issues

Will Ferrell has said that it is unlikely that a sequel will ever be made to his successful 2004 comedy Anchorman.

Paramount Pictures passed on a potential follow-up to the film last year, despite Anchorman taking around $90 million worldwide on a budget of only $26 million.

"Anchorman 2, you'd have to really assert some kind of email hate campaign to Paramount Pictures because they've told us, quote unquote, 'We've run the numbers and it's not a good fit'," Ferrell said recently, according to Cinema Blend.

"Everyone we tell the idea [to] loves it, except for the studio that owns the rights," he added, regarding his plans for the sequel. "Ball's in their courts, but they're being idiots."

The film was responsible for helping to launch Ferrell's career, and also brought attention to his co-stars Paul Rudd and Steve Carell.

Despite the lack of progress on Anchorman 2, Ferrell still has a number of projects underway, including the political comedy Southern Rivals opposite The Hangover star Zach Galifianakis.

Ferrell's latest film, the indie drama Everything Must Go, launches in US cinemas on May 13.

Peter Jackson confirms 'Hobbit' recasting

Peter Jackson has confirmed that Dean O'Gorman will replace Rob Kazinsky in his forthcoming adaptation of The Hobbit.

The Oscar-winning director announced via Facebook that the coveted role of Fili had been awarded to O'Gorman, a relative unknown recently seen in comedy drama series The Almighty Johnsons, following Kazinsky's departure earlier this month.

The ex-Eastenders actor cited a "health issue" as the reason behind his exit from the J.R.R. Tolkien epic, which had already started production in New Zealand.

Further elaborating on the casting news, Jackson stated in his online message: "Dean's a terrific Kiwi actor, who I am thrilled to be working with. He's recently been in an excellent TV series down here called The Almighty Johnsons, and I should let fans of that show know that our shooting schedule allows Dean to continue with a second series next year. Dean will be joining us next week."

He also revealed that Pushing Daisies actor Lee Pace had been cast as Elven King Thranduil, adding: "Casting these Tolkien stories is very difficult, especially the Elven characters, and Lee has always been our first choice for Thranduil.

"He's going to be great. We loved his performance in a movie called The Fall a few years ago, and have been hoping to work with him since. When we were first discussing who would be right for Thranduil, Lee came into mind almost immediately."

Part One of The Hobbit is due to hit cinemas in December 2012.
