'Superman' female lead 'may be a villain

A recent report claims that the female lead that Zack Snyder is currently choosing for his Superman reboot is actually for the part of a female supervillain.

Earlier this week it was reported that Alice Eve, Diane Kruger and Rosamund Pike were the top three contenders for the film's female lead, which was presumed to be longtime Superman romantic interest Lois Lane.

However, according to Latino Review, the role that these three actresses are supposedly vying for is actually that of Kryptonian supervillain Ursa.

Ursa has appeared on screen before, played by Sarah Douglas during the Christopher Reeve film franchise in both Superman: The Movie and Superman II.

These rumours suggests that General Zod may be the film's primary villain after all, despite Snyder's previous claims to the contrary.

The film is due to begin production this summer for an expected release in late 2012.

Kruger denies 'Superman' casting rumours

Inglourious Basterds actress Diane Kruger has denied that she is in talks to star as the female lead in Zack Snyder's upcoming Superman reboot.

The actress was one of three names reported to be the top contenders for the undisclosed part, alongside Alice Eve and Rosamund Pike. However, Kruger claims that the reports are all untrue.

"They're all false rumours," Kruger told MTV News. "I don't know who launched them but it's not true."

Snyder is currently deciding on a lead actress to star opposite his male lead Henry Cavill, who was announced last week as the new Superman.

Other actresses rumoured for the film include Twilight star Kristen Stewart, Academy Award nominee Natalie Portman and Mean Girls actress Rachel McAdams.

Production on the new Superman film is set to begin this summer, followed by an expected release date of Christmas 2012.

Mother' star likely to join 'Avengers

How I Met Your Mother star Cobie Smulders has emerged as one of the front-runners for the previously undisclosed role of Maria Hill in Marvel Studios' upcoming film The Avengers.

Earlier this week Samuel L. Jackson, who will play S.H.I.E.L.D. Director Nick Fury in the film, revealed that his character would be accompanied by a female sidekick who was currently being auditioned.

This sidekick is widely expected to be that of Deputy Director Maria Hill, who emerged in the comics as a cold and ruthless replacement for Nick Fury during the Civil War event.

If negotiations go to plan, a deal is expected to be signed with Smulders within the next few weeks.

Production on The Avengers is due to begin this April, followed by an announced release date of May 4, 2012.

Zack Snyder promises "physical" 'Superman'

ack Snyder has revealed details about his upcoming Superman movie.

Speaking to SFX, the Sucker Punch director claimed that producer Christopher Nolan and screenwriter David Goyer have come up with a modern approach to the DC Comics character.

"My feeling about Superman is that I've been a fan of the character for a long time. But the question for me was always, 'What can you do with Superman in a modern world?'" he said.

"And I think the amazing thing that Chris and David have created, that I'm working on now, and the reason why I was like, 'Yeah, I'll do that,' was that they found that in him. They found the why in him. That’s the exciting part for me."

Superman, starring Henry Cavill in the title role, will open in December 2012.

Freeman jokes about 2015 'Hobbit' start date

Martin Freeman has played down suggestions that the upcoming Hobbit movie is "cursed".

Filming on the two-part adaptation has been postponed due to arguments over distribution rights, overpriced budgets, actors' union complaints and director Peter Jackson's recent stomach surgery.

However, Freeman, who will play Bilbo Baggins in the Warner Bros picture, rejected the notion that the project has been hit by a curse.

"There are some bits of bad luck associated with it," he said at a press conference. "We're all very optimistic about it."

He went on to joke: "We're ready to go - just as soon as 2015 comes around."

Freeman also revealed that he has been carefully studying the performance of Ian Holm in Jackson's Lord Of The Rings trilogy to see how he matches up to Holm's portrayal of Bilbo.

"Without trying to blow my own trumpet nor with too much false modesty, I think I'm quite a good match for him," Freeman insisted.

The Hobbit is currently scheduled for release in December 2012 and December 2013.
