Nolan: 'Dark Knight Rises is groundbreaking'

It was revealed yesterday that the upcoming Warner Bros picture is to be called The Dark Knight Rises and will be shot in Nolan's preferred choice of high-definition IMAX cameras rather than 3D.

Explaining his decision, Nolan said that the introduction of 3D could disrupt the visual continuity of his rebooted franchise, and argued that he wants to retain the vast sense of "scale" that was present in the previous films.

He told the Los Angeles Times: "We want the look and feel of the film to be faithful to what has come before in the first two films. There was a large canvas and operatic sweep to The Dark Knight and we want to make a film that will carry on with that look and feel.

"There's an intimacy at times [with the 3D effect] and we didn't want to lose scale... Our ambition for the third movie is to complete a story that has begun. This is not starting over, this is not rebooting. We're finishing something, and keeping a consistency with what's come before has real value."

Nolan went on to note that the high-definition cameras will potentially allow him to scale new heights of image quality on a cinematic scale, insisting that it will not be necessary to view the picture in IMAX to "see the benefits of the extraordinarily sharp, high-resolution".

He added: "We're looking to do something technologically that's never been done before. Our ambitions are to make a great movie."

The Dark Knight Rises is due to be released on July 20, 2012.

Sam Worthington is yet to be officially confirmed for the Avatar sequels, according to sources.

Director James Cameron has agreed to write scripts for the films in early 2011. However, there is no immediate confirmation of which cast members will be returning.

A source told the Herald Sun: "The whole story was built around Jake [Worthington's character] - it's hard to see where Cameron can take it without him."

Worthington has previously expressed an interest in possible sequels, saying: "The plan was that if it made a billion we'd give an undertaking but we'd only do it if it challenged Jim."

First-time director takes on Murakami

By KAORI SHOJI
Special to The Japan Times
Many filmmakers say the difficulties of adapting a best-selling novel to the screen can be daunting. How about the challenge of adapting a story by a foreign best-selling author ("All God's Children Can Dance" by Haruki Murakami) from a country one had never visited (Japan) and to choose the project as a feature debut?

"As a first-time feature director, just the idea of taking on Murakami might not have been such a bright move," says Robert Logevall, who had nurtured a career in TV and film production design in LA before embarking on this project. "It is a tall task to use such layered and beautiful material to craft your film, on top of it being your first."

Logevall completed "All God's Children Can Dance" in 2007 — and the film finally makes it to Japanese shores this week, perhaps to set the scene for "Norwegian Wood" (directed by Anh Hung Tran), which opens Dec. 11.

Unlike "Norwegian Wood" however, "All God's Children . . ." makes significant departures from the original work. Logevall (working from a script by Scott Coffey) sets the story in Koreatown, L.A., and the cast is an intriguing multinational mix, including Joan Chen ("Lust, Caution"), Sonja Kinski (daughter of actress Nastassja Kinski) and Tzi Ma ("Rush Hour"). To play the all-important protagonist Kengo, Logevall handpicked Jason Lew, who teaches at New York University and is also a screenwriter.

New 'Mission: Impossible' title changed

The title for the upcoming fourth instalment in the Mission Impossible film series has been confirmed.

Empire reports the title as being Mission: Impossible - Ghost Protocol following a press conference for the film in Dubai.

The conference saw Tom Cruise appear alongside new co-stars Paula Patton and Jeremy Renner for the announcement.

"I've never done sequels to films and I never thought of these films as sequels," Cruise said of the new style of title. "Paramount has done a great job in coming up with a title, so it's not going to be MI2, 3, 4: it's going to be Mission: Impossible - Ghost Protocol."

The movie will be scripted by Mission: Impossible 3 director J.J. Abrams and helmed by The Incredibles director Brad Bird.

As well as starring in the film, Cruise is also co-producing alongside Abrams and Paula Wagner.

Mission: Impossible - Ghost Protocol is due to be released in cinemas on December 16, 2011.

Chris Pine may play lead in 'The Flash'

Chris Pine is rumoured to be up for the starring role in Warner Bros's long-awaited film adaptation of the DC Comics superhero The Flash.

Screen Rant claims that Pine is currently the studio's first choice to take on the iconic role of speedster The Flash, although it is still uncertain which incarnation of the character he could play.

Earlier this year, it was announced that Green Lantern scribe Marc Guggenheim would co-write the script alongside Michael Green and Greg Berlanti.

In an interview with Newsarama, Guggenheim hinted that the current version of the script focuses on original Flash Barry Allen.

Pine was previously rumoured for the lead role in Captain America before the part eventually went to Chris Evans.

It is thought that The Flash is slated for release in 2013.

Depp 'offered lead role in Snow White'

Johnny Depp has reportedly been given the lead in the upcoming movie Snow White And The Huntsman.

Depp, who is currently filming Pirates Of The Caribbean: On Stranger Tides, will play the titular Huntsman. Inception star Tom Hardy was originally offered the role, but is said to have since turned it down, due to shooting conflicts with his part in The Dark Knight Rises.

According to The Wrap, the story focuses on the Huntsman, who lets Snow White go instead of killing her in the woods as he was ordered to by Snow White's evil stepmother. The Huntsman then teaches Snow White how to fight her stepmother.

Charlize Theron has also been linked to the film, with the actress allegedly under consideration for the part of evil queen Ravenna.

Snow White And The Huntsman is expected to be released on December 21, 2012.

Downey Jr 'wants a role in Hangover 2'

Robert Downey Jr has said that he would love a role in the sequel to The Hangover.

Downey Jr, who stars in the upcoming movie Due Date with Hangover actor Zach Galifianakis, announced that he became good friends with Galifianakis during shooting and would "love" to act with him again. However, Downey Jr added that he does not simply want a cameo in The Hangover 2.

"I'd love to work with Zach again, but I'm not going to go do a 'day' on his sequel. Let's not kid ourselves. Besides, they've had enough squabbles over their paltry salaries. They can't afford me," Downey Jr told Extra.

Galifianakis also admitted that he bonded with Downey Jr during shooting for Due Date, though he claimed that they are very different people.

"We're not very much alike, but we do like each other," he said.

Leonardo DiCaprio to play serial killer

Leonardo DiCaprio has revealed that he will star in the upcoming movie adaptation of non-fiction story The Devil in the White City.

The story tells the tale of two men, Daniel H. Burnham and Dr H.H. Holmes. Burnham was the architect behind the 1893 Chicago World’s Fair. Meanwhile, Holmes was a serial killer pretending to be a doctor. Holmes used the fair to slaughter his victims in his 'Murder Castle', a structure containing a gas chamber, dissection table and a crematorium.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, DiCaprio will play the homicidal Dr Holmes in the movie. He will also produce the project with his partner Jennifer Killoran through his production company Appian Way.

"I think that a guy who is that intelligent and that charismatic is nothing less than complex, and it's that complexity that [DiCaprio] is drawn to," Killoran said of DiCaprio's decision to star in the project.

"And because people don't know much about [Holmes], it makes it even more interesting."

James Nesbitt cast in 'The Hobbit'

James Nesbitt has been cast in The Hobbit.

The 45-year-old actor, best known for roles in television dramas Cold Feet, Murphy's Law and Jekyll, will play the dwarf Bofur in Peter Jackson's two-film adaptation of the classic J.R.R. Tolkien novel.

In a statement, Jackson said: "James's charm, warmth and wit are legendary as is his range as an actor in both comedic and dramatic roles. We feel very lucky to be able to welcome him as one of our cast."

Bofur is described as a "disarmingly forthright, funny and occasionally brave dwarf", and accompanies Bilbo and Thorin on the Quest of Erebor in the original book.

It was also announced that newcomer Adam Brown has been cast as fellow dwarf Ori. Jackson commented: "Adam is a wonderfully expressive actor and has a unique screen presence. I look forward to seeing him bring Ori to life."

Nesbitt and Brown join a number of other actors who have previously been confirmed for the project, including Martin Freeman, Richard Armitage, Aidan Turner and Rob Kazinsky. Sylvester McCoy has also declared his involvement.

After a string of well-publicised union disputes, Warner Bros last week agreed a deal to shoot the movies in New Zealand. The films are expected to hit cinemas in December 2012 and December 2013.

Michael Caine cast in sci-fi 'Henry V'

Michael Caine and Ray Winstone will star in a science fiction adaptation of William Shakespeare's Henry V, reports The Playlist.

Vinnie Jones, Gerard Depardieu and Derek Jacobi are also leading the cast for first-time director Michael Anderson's thriller, titled Henry5.

Shakespeare's historical play chronicles the young King Henry V as he ascends to the throne following his father's passing.

Anderson's retelling, which he co-wrote with Andrew Hislop and Steve Wilkinson, moves the action into "an age of the apocalypse" where Henry fights a war against a neighbouring enemy after quelling an rebellion in his own country.

Henry V has been adapted for the big screen twice before. Laurence Olivier directed and starred in a 1944 version, while Kenneth Branagh made his directorial debut with a 1989 adaptation of the play.

Simon Pegg eyes 'Ant-Man' villain role

Simon Pegg has expressed interest in portraying a villain in Edgar Wright's proposed Ant-Man adaptation.

Speaking to View London, the actor ruled himself out of the running for the title role, but confessed that he would like to play an antagonist in the movie.

"Ed's not going to ask me to play Ant-Man," he said. "He wants some young - he'll want, like Chris Evans to do it or one of his new American buddies."

He added: "I don't think I'd want to play Ant-Man. I think it would be more fun to play a villain in that thing. I'd like to play a villain."

Created by Stan Lee and Jack Kirby, Ant-Man made his comic book debut in Tales To Astonish #35 in 1962. Several Marvel characters have assumed the alias over the years, most of whom have featured in the Avengers.

Wright is currently drafting a script for the film, which has been pencilled in for a 2012 release.

The cast of forthcoming Aardman Animations picture Arthur Christmas has been announced.

James McAvoy, Hugh Laurie, Bill Nighy, Jim Broadbent, Imelda Staunton and Ashley Jensen will all lend their voices to the 3D CG-animated film from the Wallace & Gromit studio.

Singer: 'Wolverine not in X-Men: First Class'

Bryan Singer has denied rumours that Wolverine will make an appearance in prequel X-Men: First Class.

Hugh Jackman was recently spotted near Jekyll Island, Georgia - a filming location for Matthew Vaughn's X-Men origin story - leading to speculation that the Marvel antihero would appear in the film.

Singer, who directed the first two X-Men outings and is producing First Class, claimed that the Wolverine rumours are false.

"He's not in the movie, he's in the Wolverine movies," The Coventry Telegraph quotes him as saying.

A Fox spokesman added: "X-Men hasn't started shooting in Georgia yet and if Hugh was in Georgia, it wasn't for this movie."

Singer also discussed his reasons for making First Class a period film, saying: "It's a really cool and fun story. It will be the first Silver Age Marvel movie.

"We've set First Class in a time when the X-Men were conceived in the early '60s, up against political events that were happening - the early civil rights movement - and we have these kinds of events at a time when the world didn't know mutants existed."

X-Men: First Class will open next June, while Darren Aronofsky's Wolverine 2 is scheduled for release later in 2011.

Batman 3' to feature Clayface?

The latest Dark Knight Rises casting rumours point to Clayface as the movie's villain.

According to ComicBookMovie, Kacie Thomas and Vera Farmiga have auditioned for the role of Bruce Wayne's love interest Julie Madison.

The character was previously engaged to Wayne, and also targeted by Basil Karlo - aka Clayface - in the pages of Detective Comics. This has led to speculation that he might appear in Christopher Nolan's third Batman film.

Charlize Theron has also reportedly been approached to play Commissioner Gordon's love interest Detective Sarah Essen.

Former speculation that the film's main villain would be the Riddler has been quashed by Nolan. Tom Hardy has reportedly been cast in an unnamed role in the movie.
