'Karate Kid' sequel already in the works

A sequel to the Karate Kid remake is in the works, according to Deadline.

Backer Sony Pictures is allegedly seeking out writers to pen a follow-up to the Jaden Smith and Jackie Chan family film.

The studio has been buoyed by the idea of a Karate Kid sequel after seeing the revamp pull in an impressive $56 million on its opening weekend in the US - more than the big screen A-Team spinoff. The Karate Kid cost $40 million to produce.

It is unclear if Smith, Chan or director Harald Zwart will be back for the second installment.

The Karate Kid will open in the UK on July 28.

'Bronson' helmer wants to make 'Wonder Woman'

Bronson director Nicolas Winding Refn has revealed that he wants to make a Wonder Woman movie.

The Danish filmmaker, known for his dark films such as the Pusher trilogy and Valhalla Rising, told Movieline that DC's flagship heroine would be his ideal choice to make "a $200 million extravaganza".

Refn compared his take on Wonder Woman to Christopher Nolan's Batman revamp, saying: "You need a great, extravagant, marketable action film - and everything that comes with it. But I think that when Christopher Nolan did the Batman movies, I think he very cleverly went back to the source material and took themes that had maybe not been exercised."

The director disclosed that his main objective would be to create a formidable villain for the movie, as Wonder Woman doesn't "have a Joker or those classic Batman guys".

He explained: "That's when it gets interesting, because you have to create a great countervillain to her. They tried in Catwoman - with not particularly good results. The trick with Wonder Woman is to find that antagonist who worked so well in the Batman concept - his villains are equally if not more exciting than Batman himself.

"Here, it's basically coming up with who would be a great counterpart to Wonder Woman. Is it her mother who's the real enemy? Something that’s biblical in a sense."

A Wonder Woman film had previously been in development with Buffy The Vampire Slayer creator Joss Whedon attached to direct.

Nolan 'refuses to read Batman web rumours'

Batman director Christopher Nolan has said that he avoids reading online casting rumors about the superhero franchise.

Speaking at the Los Angeles Times's Hero Complex Festival, the filmmaker admitted that gauging fan opinion on the web does not aid him in making decisions.

"Honestly, I don't really look at the Internet," he commented. "I think at a very early stage in taking on Batman, I realized it wasn't going to be helpful to look at what they say. I've always taken the view that everybody feels very passionate about these characters and they have a lot of ideas and a lot of thoughts on what should or shouldn't be done."

Nolan claimed that he has stopped using emails or carrying a mobile phone after backers Warner Bros quizzed him over rumors that he would cast Cher as Catwoman in the Dark Knight sequel.

"You'll hear things from the studio sometimes, it's clear that they've been reading stuff online, but you have to just sort of [let it go]," he explained. "I got a call saying, 'Why did you cast Cher?'. So I actually don’t have email or a cell phone. It gives me a little more time to think."

Stewart plays down 'Wanted 2' rumours

Kristen Stewart has played down speculation that she will star in Wanted 2.

The Twilight actress, who was recently linked to the sequel following Angelina Jolie's departure, told MTV that she has not signed up for the action movie.

She said: "It's weird to answer questions like this, the only two projects that I am confirmed in now are On The Road and Breaking Dawn."

Stewart admitted that she was a fan of Wanted and would be interested in starring in the sequel if a good story was in place.

"Wanted was a great movie. James McAvoy makes that movie different from most other action movies because he's a real guy - you're so with him," she said.

"I feel like most action movies don't have that. So if it had that, definitely. But I wouldn't just want to be in a mindless blow-up movie. I'm not into it."

Jonah Hill 'not pressured to branch out'

Jonah Hill has said that he does not feel pressure to branch out into non-comedic roles.

The actor, who stars in the upcoming film Cyrus, insisted that he chooses roles based on the strength of the script and not the project's genre.

"I never go, 'Oh, man, I've done all of these comedies, I need people to take me seriously'," he told Vanity Fair.

"It's never like that. You just always want to do things that interest you and you think will be good. Also, you really want to try and challenge yourself to do something different."

Hill added that he is currently working on a remake of 21 Jump Street.

"It's not like an exact remake. It's not like the same characters or anything. It's basically just about young-looking cops that go back to high school. It's not a spoof, but it is a comedy. The big idea that we came up with that we really fell in love with was: What if these guys, who are insecure in high school, grow up and become cops?

"They gather this confidence but they look too young to be taken seriously as cops. So they get sent back to high school to solve these crimes that have been going on. But, instead of having that confidence they immediately revert back to the way that they were in high school."

Cyrus hits theatres on June 18.

However, in an interview with MSN, Unkrich confirmed that the animated characters will return in a short feature that will screen before Cars 2 in 2011.

He said: "I really tried my best to end the story of Andy and his toys and bring that story to a close in a really nice way at the end of this film. That being said, we know that people love the characters, love Woody and Buzz, and would hate to say goodbye to them completely.

"I don't know that there would ever be a Toy Story 4. We don't have any plans for one - but we are trying to find ways to keep the characters alive. We have announced we're going to do a short film in front of Cars 2 that uses the Toy Story characters. We're going to keep them alive; they're not going away forever."
