Felicia Day: 'Whedon perfect for Avengers'

Dr. Horrible actress Felicia Day has said that Joss Whedon is the perfect choice to direct Marvel's Avengers movie.

Whedon is reportedly in final negotiations to helm the upcoming superhero film.

Day said that he would do an "amazing" job directing the picture. "I mean, nobody else knows comics better than Joss," she told MTV.

The 30-year-old added: "He loves them with a passion and to throw that many comic book characters in a movie? I don't know who else could handle it."

Fox left 'Transformers' over weight row?

Megan Fox reportedly quit her role in Transformers 3 because director Michael Bay thought she was too skinny.

According to The Wrap, Bay felt that Fox arrived for filming on the sequel looking "pale," "underweight" and "unhealthy". He then allegedly gave Fox four weeks to put on weight, but the actress and director clashed and the arguments culminated in her walking off the blockbuster last week.

A representative for Fox said: "We disagree with the assessment about her weight. She looks healthy and happy."

An unnamed set insider added that Bay "wants his actresses to look a certain way, and if they can't meet his absurd standards of beauty, he gets rid of them".

British model Rosie Huntington-Whitely has since emerged as the frontrunner to replace Fox and has received approval from Transformers executive producer Steven Spielberg.

However, star Shia LaBeouf is thought to be unhappy with the casting switch due to Huntington-Whitely's lack of acting experience.

James McAvoy for 'X-Men: First Class'

James McAvoy has signed on to play the role of Professor X in the upcoming X-Men: First Class.

The film, which will serve as a prequel to previously released X-Men movies, is to see the actor portraying a young version of the well-known Charles Xavier, reports The Hollywood Reporter.

“[First Class will] chart the epic beginning of the X-Men saga," read a press release.

"Before Charles Xavier and Eric Lensherr took the names Professor X and Magneto, they were two young men discovering their powers for the first time. Before they were archenemies, they were the closest of friends, working together, with other Mutants (some familiar, some new), to stop the greatest threat the world has ever known.

"In the process, a rift between them opened, which began the eternal war between Magneto's Brotherhood and Professor X's X-Men."

Matthew Vaughn is directing the feature for Fox with a tentative release date of June 2011.

Rising star set to shine

Iconiq heads for World Stage at MTV Video Music Awards Japan

By ROBERT MICHAEL POOLE
Special to The Japan Times
In September 1984 — three years after MTV: Music Television had kicked into life with British electro-pop duo The Buggles' appropriately titled 1979 classic "Video Killed the Radio Star" — Madonna strode onto a New York stage for the fledgling channel's first Music Video Awards.

Statements of intent: Iconiq's androgynous appearance, and her name, are clear signs of the kind of "rebirth" she has in mind.

In so doing, she claimed her place as an '80s icon with a suggestive performance of "Like a Virgin." Clad in a lace wedding dress, Madonna presented an enduring symbol that many artists have toyed with in the decades since.

But MTV, its audience and the technology available to them have evolved drastically since then, and when the MTV Video Music Awards Japan take place Saturday, May 29, at Tokyo's Yoyogi National Stadium, it will for the first time be aligned with World Stage — MTV's latest attempt to draw viewers away from such on-demand Web sites as YouTube by broadcasting the same concerts and events on every MTV channel worldwide.

World Stage has proved timely for MTV Japan, whose market share has been slowly eroded by rivals Music On! TV and Space Shower and whose viewers have been shifting to online media.

In fact the awards show, which has served as the channel's flagship event since 2002 — attracting stars including Michael Jackson, Mariah Carey, Green Day and Missy Elliott — was in jeopardy this year as the company went through restructuring.

The Japanese public's appetite for international music has been declining, with record-label body RIAJ reporting that nondomestic product accounted for just 18 percent of the market in the first quarter of 2010.

Perhaps reflecting this, Saturday's MTV Video Music Awards Japan has only one certified international star scheduled, in the shape of U.S. chart-topping pop singer Ke$ha.

Del Toro: 'The Hobbit' awaits start date

The Hobbit is on hold after becoming caught up in negotiations over MGM's future, a report claims.

Director Guillermo Del Toro said the Lord Of The Rings prequel, based on the JRR Tolkien novel, will not receive a start date until the movie studio's future is clear.

Rumours that MGM was "teetering on bankruptcy" emerged last September and the studio has since been given a fourth extension on its payment deadline.

Del Toro told Comingsoon.net: "It's not greenlit. That's categorical... We've been caught in a very tangled negotiation... There cannot be any start dates until the MGM situation gets resolved. They do hold a considerable portion of the rights." The director added that the production team are prepared for when the film is "finally triggered".

Clarke: 'Emma Roberts could outdo Julia'

Noel Clarke has claimed that Emma Roberts could potentially be a "bigger" star than her aunt Julia Roberts.

The director, who worked with the 19-year-old Emma on his new film 4.3.2.1, says that he is certain that the rising actress is destined to reach movie star status.

Clarke told BANG Showbiz: "Emma was great. Emma was the second or third person to sign up and get on board, she wanted to do the movie from the beginning. I appreciated that. She gave 100 percent and for her to come over and do a small British film like this is hopefully testament to what we did with the film.

"I think she could be bigger than Julia. I think she most definitely could be better. She's young. You won't realise this yet, but in a few years time you'll think, 'Oh yeah, Noel did say that'."

Clarke recently revealed that he wrote 4.3.2.1. in less than a month after being criticised for his portrayal of female characters.
