Stone: 'Time had come for Wall Street 2'

Oliver Stone has confirmed that he would not have been interested in filming a follow-up to Wall Street were it not for the financial crisis.

Speaking to reporters after the Cannes screening of Wall Street: Money Never Sleeps, the director said that he had rejected initial plans for a sequel.

Stone said: "Michael Douglas and [producer] Ed Pressman approached me in 2006 and I didn't want to celebrate that culture of wealth.

"It was ongoing and it just seemed to be getting worse and worse and there seemed no reason to make a movie. After the crash all bets were off because really it was a major heart attack."

He added: "It was a triple bypass - I think they put a stent in but I'm not sure if they've solved it. So this is serious. It puts the whole world into a new perspective. It's time to come back and get Gordon Gekko.

"Mike and Ed were right - they came back to me in 2008 with a second script, which was better - much better - which became the basis of this movie... It had to be done, its time had come."

Stone: 'Door is open for Wall Street 3'

Oliver Stone has suggested that a third Wall Street movie is on the cards.

Speaking to Reuters, the filmmaker revealed that he has left the door open for another instalment in the series.

"Why not? We left it open at the end in a way on which we can hang a Wall Street 3," he said. "We'll have Gekko back and maybe Josh Brolin, too."

Stone also admitted that he had "some doubts" about making a follow-up to his 1987 original, adding that star Michael Douglas had first approached him about directing Money Never Sleeps.

"It was [Michael Douglas] and [producer] Ed Pressman who were leading the charge [to make the film]... If anything, I had some doubts."

Wall Street: Money Never Sleeps is currently screening at the Cannes Film Festival.

Hamill confirmed to direct 'Black Pearl'

Mark Hamill will direct a feature adaptation of his comic book The Black Pearl through his newly-formed Berkeley Square Films company, it has been confirmed.

The Star Wars actor's Dark Horse Comics story, first published in 1996, centres on Luther Drake, a loner who is brought up on a diet of violent films, tabloid TV and comics. When a young neighbour is kidnapped, he takes justice into his own hands and becomes a vigilante.

"It's a dark and raw suspense thriller, a prowling de-glamorisation of the usual mega-budget Hollywood revenge fantasy with an edgy, real world documentary style that deconstructs the familiar comic book conventions, stands them on their head and leaves the audience with a Sixth Sense or The Usual Suspects-type twist ending," Hamill said.

Berkeley Square Films partner Paul Tamasy and his writing collaborator Eric Johnson (the upcoming Mark Walhberg boxing drama The Fighter) have co-written the screenplay with Hamill. The Dark Knight's Michael Uslan is serving as producer.

The project, to be budgeted at around the $7 million mark, has been described as "more Fargo and Taxi Driver than Batman".

LaBeouf: 'Indiana 4 dropped the ball'

Shia LaBeouf has admitted that the fourth instalment in the Indiana Jones franchise "dropped the ball".

LaBeouf starred opposite Harrison Ford in The Kingdom Of The Crystal Skull two years ago. However, the 23-year-old claimed that the sequel didn't live up to the standards set by the rest of the adventure series.

Speaking to the Los Angeles Times, he said: "I feel like I dropped the ball on the legacy that people loved and cherished.

"I have a relationship with [director] Steven [Spielberg] that supersedes our business work. And believe me, I talk to him often enough to know that I'm not out of line. And I would never disrespect the man. But when you drop the ball you drop the ball."

He continued: "You get to monkey-swinging and things like that and you can blame it on the writer and you can blame it on Steven. But the actor's job is to make it come alive and make it work, and I couldn't do it. So that's my fault.

"I think the audience is pretty intelligent. I think they know when you've made... And I think if you don't acknowledge it, then why do they trust you the next time you're promoting a movie? We (Harrison Ford and LaBeouf) had major discussions. He wasn't happy with it either."

Ewan McGregor joins Gilliam's 'Don Quixote'

Ewan McGregor has signed up to star in Terry Gilliam's long-delayed The Man Who Killed Don Quixote.

'Captain America' to shoot in London

Marvel Studios has revealed plans to shoot Captain America: The First Avenger in London.

According to the Los Angeles Times, the company has opted to film in the UK, rather than California, to minimise the amount of special effects and set construction work required to recreate the comic's setting.

"I actually had location scouts here (LA) to see what could be done," said Marvel Studios co-president Louis D'Esposito. "But it would have required so much visual effects work and set construction, it didn't make sense."

The exec added that taxes also influenced the decision as the filming schedule fell on the wrong side of California's tax credit plan, vetoing the production of movies costing over $75m (£52m).

Captain America arrives in theatres on July 22, 2011.
