Johnson calls for more female superheroes

Kick-Ass star Aaron Johnson has said that there aren't enough female superheroes.

The British actor praised the appearance of Hit Girl, a 12-year-old assassin played by Chloe Moretz, in his new comic book movie.

"Fantastic. You need a few more women superheroes and this is a young girl," he told DS. "She's the one who kicks ass really and that's what it's all about. It's good and it's funny."

Johnson added that the opportunity to play an inept vigilante drew him to Kick-Ass: "It is enjoyable being the anti-superhero. I'm this amateur superhero that's not quite as good as he wants to be. It's sort of a spoof on the Spider-Mens and Supermens. It's nice to be something different."

Michael Bay: 'Jury is still out on 3D'

Michael Bay has revealed that he has not been convinced to convert Transformers 3 into 3D.

Speaking to Deadline, the director explained that special 3D cameras are too big for him to use while shooting the film's action scenes and added that he has not been impressed by post-production conversion.

"I shoot complicated stuff," he said. "I put real elements into action scenes and honestly, I am not sold right now on the conversion process."

Bay admitted that he would consider making the movie 3D if a firm convinced him with their work.

"I am trying to be sold, and some companies are still working on the shots I gave them," he said. "Right now, it looks like fake 3D, with layers that are very apparent. People can say whatever they want about my movies, but they are technically precise and if this isn't going to be excellent, I don't want to do it. And it is my choice.

"I'm used to having the A-team working on my films and I'm going to hand it over to the D-team, have it shipped to India and hope for the best?"

Bay also explained that James Cameron's Avatar was so successful because it was filmed in 3D from the beginning.

"The conversion process is always going to be inferior to shooting in real 3D," he said. "Avatar took four years. You can't just s**t out a 3D movie. I'm saying the jury is still out."

The third Transformers film is scheduled for release in July 2011.

Pegg 'wants Scotty sex in new Star Trek'

Cage: 'Kick-Ass is pretty dark in places'

Nicolas Cage has admitted that there is some "difficult material" in his upcoming movie Kick-Ass.

The actor stars alongside Aaron Johnson and Chloe Moretz in the Matthew Vaughn-directed adaptation of the Mark Millar and John Romita Jr-penned comics.

Cage told Metro of his role: "It's pretty dark in places and quite a lot of fun.

"Getting the tone right is important, because when you read in the script that the introduction to Big Daddy and Hit-Girl is her in a Kevlar vest and him firing rounds into her chest, that’s pretty difficult material."

He added: "But then I got the humour that Matthew was after. That relationship between Big Daddy and his daughter, well, I think there are many parents who think they are doing the best for their children but who are actually doing the worst for them.

"So this is like an extreme take on that; a father who thinks he is protecting his child by teaching her to be a vigilante. There's a real ironic, comedic attitude to this movie, which is largely what appealed to me about it."

Vaughn downplays 'Superman' rumours

Matthew Vaughan has downplayed the rumours that he was once in the running to direct a Superman movie.

The Kick-Ass director told MTV News that reports that he and Mark Millar had been in talks with the studio over the long-awaited film had been exaggerated.

"That sort of all got blown out of proportion," he said. "I had a very brief chat with them and that's all it was.

"From a 30-second chat, it's become this huge thing. It hadn't gone [as far as casting], we just had an idea for a story for Superman - that was it."

When asked about The Dark Knight collaborators Christopher Nolan and David Goyer, who are working on the next Superman movie, Vaughan said he hoped they get the tone right.

"I think they're both talented, so it's in good hands. I just hope they don't make it too serious.

"I think that's the one thing not to do with Superman, trying to do the serious The Dark Knight version. Superman is about colour and fun, or it should be, for me."
