The Karate Kid

WEDNESDAY - 7:00AM BY BUZZSUGAR 7 | 11 ||Share
The remakes keep on coming (I know, I know, collective groan). We already heard news of Will Smith's son Jaden and Jackie Chan stepping into roles for the update on The Karate Kid, and now we're getting a peek at the first trailer.

Judging by the preview, the general premise appears to be the same (boy gets harassed, trains in martial arts, and then faces his tormentor in competition), but this new version is definitely geared more to a family audience. Jaden Smith is teeny tiny in the Ralph Macchio part, the bullies are basically a Beijing elementary school yard gang, and a sweet, but baby-faced love interest is sitting in for Elisabeth Shue.
All of this just makes me want to go back and watch the original (and Mr. Miyagi's wax on, wax off scene) and leave this new update for the kiddies. I just can't get myself excited for the story when it's taken on such a younger twist, and I found myself chuckling over the film's villains — who are supposed to be threatening. Still, Taraji P. Henson is playing the mom, so that's a plus in my column.
The Karate Kid high kicks into theaters on June 11. Check out the trailer, and tell me what you think when you read more.

Law 'humbled' to complete Ledger movie

Jude Law has revealed that he was humbled to complete Heath Ledger's role in his final film The Imaginarium Of Doctor Parnassus.

Law, 36, stepped in alongside Johnny Depp and Colin Farrell when Ledger died from an accidental overdose of prescription medication in January 2008, aged 28.

The British actor said that it was a "double tug" when he was asked to join the cast. "I liked Heath very much as a man and admired him as an actor. To help finish his final piece of work was a tribute I felt compelled to make," he told People.

"To help Terry [Gilliam] finish his film was an honour paid to a man I adore. Though we were all there in remembrance, Heath's heart pushed us with great lightness to the finish."

The Imaginarium Of Doctor Parnassus, which was released in the UK in October, opens in US cinemas on Christmas Day.

Jude Law proud of 'edgy' Watson

Jude Law has spoken about his reinvention of Dr Watson in the new Sherlock Holmes movie.

The English actor, 36, stars as Holmes's sidekick alongside Robert Downey Jr. in Guy Ritchie's detective thriller.

"When I was asked to get involved, Robert was already set as Sherlock and Guy was directing and I knew from then that it was going to be a different take on the older films of Sherlock Holmes," Law told PA.

"They weren't asking me to put on two stone and fool around and put my foot in waste paper baskets, they were asking me to play Watson with a bit more edge.

"I hadn't read the books as a boy, so what was intriguing was to see how much of this new 'rediscovery' was already in the source material.

"It was a happy juggle between going back to Conan Doyle and relishing in all the accuracy that had perhaps been overlooked in the past, and also looking to the future and adding a new energy for an audience that we hope will discover Sherlock Holmes for the first time."

Sherlock Homes is released in cinemas on December 26.

Dunst to leave 'Spider-Man' films?

Actress Kirsten Dunst is to be written out of the Spider-Man movie franchise and replaced as leading lady by Anne Hathaway, according to reports.

It is believed that Spider-Man 4 could be the last outing for her character, Mary Jane Watson, who featured as Peter Parker's love interest in the first three films.

A source told Star magazine: "The plan is for her character to be written out, probably by dying.

"Anne will take over as Peter Parker's new love interest for this project and for Spider-Man 5 and Spider-Man 6 which are being written now.

"Anne's in L.A. doing a lot of meetings on the movie because filming is right around the corner."

Hathaway is rumoured to be playing the part of Felicia Hardy, known as Black Cat in the Marvel comic series but thought to go by the name Vultress in the film adaptation.

Filming on Spider-Man 4, directed by Sam Raimi and starring Tobey Maguire, is still expected to begin early next year for a May 5, 2011 release date.

Downey Jr 'should do romcoms with Law'

Robert Downey Jr has praised his Sherlock Holmes co-star Jude Law.

In an interview with Parade, Downey Jr joked that he and Law should appear in romantic comedies together.

"It's so funny to me because usually I'm just saying about a female co-star, 'We had this great chemistry'," he explained. "And now I'm saying the same thing about Jude. It's like we should be doing romantic comedies together or something.

"This film is a love affair of sorts and the two of us knew when to ying and when to yang. We were definitely good together."

Downey Jr added that he enjoyed working on a film version of the iconic books.

"The most exciting part for me was that we presented Watson as he actually was in the books by Conan Doyle," he revealed. "He was not, as he's been portrayed, some bumbling guy with his foot stuck in a wastebasket who's dumb compared to his brilliant roommate. These are two guys who make this fantastic team."

Mr T will not have 'A-Team' cameo

Mr T has confirmed that he will not be seen in the forthcoming film adaptation of The A-Team.

The original B.A. Baracus told Latino Review that his decision to bow out has nothing to do with money, but that he sees no reason to show himself if he will not be reprising the role he made famous.

Instead, Baracus is to be played by former UFC champion Quinton 'Rampage' Jackson.

The first Faceman (Dirk Benedict) and Dwight Shultz, who played Murdoch, will each be making appearances. Hannibal actor George Peppard passed away a number of years ago.

'Avatar' sequels to take place off Pandora

James Cameron has revealed that his planned Avatar sequels could take place away from the first film's Pandora setting.

Speaking to the Los Angeles Times, Cameron said that further films will move the action off Pandora and explore other moons orbiting around the planet Polyphemus.

"The planet in Pandora's sky is called Polyphemus and it's the primary for a system of moons, just like in our solar system, Jupiter has fifty some moons and they're discovering smaller ones all of the time," he said.

"We have some story ideas for how to branch out into other moons of Polyphemus and the Alpha Centauri A solar system, but we've got to make some money with this movie first before we think about the sequel."

Avatar topped the US box office over the Christmas weekend and has taken over $600 million in ticket sales worldwide since opening on December 17.

Ramis prepping 'Ghostbusters 3' for 2011

Harold Ramis has revealed that Ghostbusters 3 will be released in 2011.

Speaking to Heeb magazine, the actor-writer said that the project will start production in summer 2010.

"Something’s going to happen. Dan [Aykroyd] did write a spec GB3 screenplay a few years ago, but no one was motivated to pursue it. Now, 25 years after the original, there seems to be some willingness to proceed and apparently a substantial public appetite for a sequel," Ramis said.

He added: "GB3 is progressing with plans to shoot next summer and release in 2011."

Ramis, who wrote and starred in the first two Ghostbusters movies, said that the sequel would introduce new young Ghostbusters and will also feature "all the old guys".
