Ritchie: 'Holmes the perfect segue'

Guy Ritchie has admitted that making a Sherlock Holmes movie provided him with the "perfect segue" into big-budget filmmaking.

Speaking to journalists at the movie's UK press conference, the director said that the Robert Downey Jr project also allowed him to bring a British sensibility to a Hollywood production.

"I chose this really because I needed a job," Ritchie commented when asked what appealed to him about the film. "Outside of that I wanted to go from small, independent film, and this seemed to be the perfect segue from something that was small.

"I managed to hold on to an English identity, but at the same time we had American muscle and American pockets. It's the perfect segue to have something that's big and broad but is essentially English."

The Lock, Stock helmer said that he did not find the transition difficult, adding: "It's really the same, the same process is involved in a small film as it is for a big film."

Sherlock Holmes opens in the US on Christmas Day and the UK on Boxing Day.

Cruz: 'Dancing gave me a breakdown'

Penelope Cruz has said that she was happy to dance again in upcoming movie Nine.

The star told Parade that she had wanted to be a dancer before becoming an actress.

Cruz said: "When I was a kid I trained as a dancer for 14 years. I used to dance every day for hours and it gave me a lot of happiness. I always wanted to do a musical.

"But the discipline of it was too demanding and I had what I guess you call a nervous breakdown. That's when I decided to try acting."

She added: "So it was great to get another chance to dance five hours a day on Nine. There was also the challenge of having to sing and having to prepare for that and feeling completely vulnerable.

"I think we all were scared, everyone in the cast was, and we could all understand how the other one was feeling."

Nine opens in cinemas on December 18.

Maguire: 'Hobbit reports not accurate'

Tobey Maguire has said that he has not been in talks to star in Guillermo del Toro's Lord Of The Rings prequel The Hobbit.

The Spider-Man star had been linked to the role of Bilbo Baggins in the fantasy film. However, the actor refuted the rumours in an interview with The Hollywood Reporter.

"I have not met with del Toro. We don't have any near future plans," Maguire commented. "I don't know if something got misconstrued or miscommunicated but the source was not accurate at all."

Maguire refused to rule himself out of playing the lead role in The Hobbit, citing his admiration for the creative team involved.

"I love Guillermo del Toro and Peter Jackson, and I certainly wouldn't take myself out of the conversation... if I was part of it," he added. "But I haven't read a script or talked to anybody about it."

Marshall 'still figuring out Pirates 4'

Pirates Of The Caribbean: On Stranger Tides helmer Rob Marshall has said that he is still optimistic about the adventure movie getting made.

Marshall, the director of upcoming musical Nine, told Coming Soon that he is "still trying to figure out if it's going to all happen".

"If it happens - I think Johnny Depp is doing a movie with Angelina Jolie in the spring (The Tourist) - so if it happens, we'll start in the summer, and we'll see. I'm excited. If it happens, it happens. I'd be thrilled. I just love Johnny and I'm excited about the genre."

The filmmaker revealed that he has yet to see a script for the fourth instalment in the Disney franchise.

"I would need a script first," he said. "It all comes from the script and the story. You serve the story and you find out what the story is and then you work from there. That's it, it's simple."

Downey Jr: 'We had to twist Holmes up'

Robert Downey Jr has claimed that his new Sherlock Holmes movie had to "twist up" Sir Arthur Conan Doyle's character to keep it feeling fresh.

The actor admitted that, although the film takes historical liberties, it remains faithful to the spirit of Doyle's literary creation.

"There's an esoteric element to this and sometimes you just feel like you're in the right groove and you feel the history and the legacy of something," he said at the Holmes UK press conference.

"Sometimes you just feel like you're being silently approved of from some other place in time. You can't beat Doyle's words, so we had one of his quotes on the call sheet every day. We had to twist it up a bit, I think it's no mystery that Sherlock Holmes didn't invent the silencer... We were honouring it but still being entertaining."

Sherlock Holmes opens worldwide on Christmas Day and Boxing Day.

The Inglourious Basterds director said at a Hollywood Reporter roundtable that he intends to quit films when digital cinemas replace traditional theatres.

"I'm going to write novels and cinema literature, stuff like that," said Tarantino. "I would add more to that. If it actually gets to the place where you can't show 35mm film in theatres anymore and everything is digital projection, I won't even make it to 60."

Guy Ritchie: 'Jude Law is Hotson'

Guy Ritchie has revealed that he always wanted a handsome actor to play Sherlock Holmes's confidant John Watson in the forthcoming blockbuster movie.

Speaking at the film's UK press conference, the director said that he hoped casting Jude Law in the role of Watson would give the iconic partnership a dynamic in line with Butch Cassidy And The Sundance Kid.

"It's been called the Hotson vs. Potson scenario," Ritchie remarked. "We really wanted a good-looking Watson, then in the tabloids it got called Hotson. This was because I'd always seen their relationship as an equal partnership.

"More like Butch and Sundance than this bumbling Potson. I just thought that was fair to Conan Doyle. Lionel (Wigram, screenwriter) and I were always in agreement with how we thought this partnership should be portrayed."

Sherlock Holmes debuts in US cinemas on Christmas Day and Boxing Day in the UK.

Coogan arranging 'Partridge' film over Skype

Steve Coogan has said that he is having to pull together the Alan Partridge movie with co-writers Armando Iannucci and Peter Baynham over Skype.

The British comedy star, who recently confirmed that the untitled film will shoot in America, admitted that Iannucci and Baynham's movie success with In The Loop and Borat have made co-ordinating Partridge's return difficult.

"It's going to happen," Coogan said of the project in an interview with The AV Club. "I'm taking meetings about it next week. It's getting the three most important people - we've sort of splintered.

"It's getting us all in the same space so we can actually focus on it. That's now starting to happen. It was also something that for a while I felt ambivalent about, but I want to do it and get it done."

He continued: "We're having to do Skype and conference calls at the moment. The character, almost despite his success, as a character still makes me laugh. I still find him funny. I still find myself jotting things down, going, 'Oh this would be a funny thing for him to do'. Which is a great thing, when a character just exists in your head."
