About Body of Proof

Body of Proof premiered on ABC on March 29, 2011

About the Show:
Body of Proof follows the life and career of Medical Examiner Megan Hunt, once a high-flying neurosurgeon, who now works in Philadelphia's Medical Examiner's Office after a car accident abruptly ended her neurosurgery career. As a Medical Examiner Megan applies her vast medical knowledge, keen instincts and variously charming and scalpel-like personality to the task of solving the medical mysteries of the dead and bringing the people responsible for their deaths to justice. But that's only half the show.

I love mysteries, be they criminal, medical or any other kind, but my focus as a writer has always been on strong characters. In Body of Proof I and my partner Matt Gross wanted a show that delivered both. On its surface Body of Proof is a close-ended procedural. Each week will deliver on the promise of a smart mystery ingeniously solved. But at its core, each episode is really just an excuse for us to visit Megan and the rest of our wonderful cast of characters. What do I love about Megan? She is funny and charming but also impatient and driven. She can be abrasive one moment and achingly vulnerable the next. We may not be as smart as she is, but we're not as broken as she is either. We will root for her as she takes on not only cops and killers each week but also the wreckage of her marriage and her estrangement from her young daughter Lacey. And we will experience right along with Megan her faltering early steps in what will be a series-long quest to find love, happiness and self-knowledge, a quest for which she often seems completely unequipped, but a quest on which she has an unlikely group of helpers. The dead.

Death is a fact of life. The irony is, death has brought new life to Megan Hunt. As she investigates what happened to her patients, their lives and the lessons they hold become a kind of bequest to Megan, to learn from and to apply to her own life, if she has the courage to do so. It's one thing to want to change, it's quite another to make it happen. We will enjoy watching her try.

As Megan unravels the mystery of his death and who killed him, she recalls how she learned of her own father's death. Meanwhile, Peter helps Megan juggle her biggest challenge yet, taking charge of the Saturday carpool with her hard-to-impress daughter, Lacey, and her girlfriends. Also, Kate takes on a consulting role in a pro bono case with Megan's ex-husband.

Episode 8: Buried Secrets
The high-profile, hit-and-run death of a Philadelphia homicide detective hits close to home with Detective Samantha "Sam" Baker. As Megan and the team dig deeper to avenge the death of one of their own, Megan realizes how important the bond between a parent and daughter is and misses her own close relationship with her daughter. Meanwhile, Megan must go to her mother, Judge Joan Hunt, with whom she has a strained relationship, to ask for her help in the investigation.

Episode 9: Broken Home
When Nikki Parkson, a philanthropic young socialite, dies, Megan suspects foul play, despite the fact that Nikki suffered from a terminal illness. Nikki's grieving mother and brother are devastated that their attempts at a dignified funeral are halted by Megan's investigation. Frustrating Megan's team is the fact that Nikki's body holds few clues, since she was embalmed before the autopsy. Meanwhile Kate's personal life interrupts the investigation, and Lacey suspects that her parents are getting back together.

Now, the Argyles have to deal not only with the loss of an innocent family member but also with the knowledge that someone else amongst them must have murdered Rachel Argyle. Fortunately, Miss Marple is on hand to find the guilty party, but it's not before the deaths of other innocent people that she can reveal the truth.

When Treves is found dead the day after a dinner party at Lady Tressilian's home and Lady Tressilian herself is found bludgeoned to death a short time later, Miss Marple must sort through the complex set of relationships among all of the players and must determine what role a tale of a child's crime may have had to play in the deaths.

All she gets are two tickets to a mystery bus tour and the advice to invite someone trustworthy to the bus trip. The only thing she knows about the crime being a single word: 'nemesis'. Accompanied by her novelist nephew Raymond West, she finds herself on a bus filled with a strange assortment of people from all stations and walks of life - from debutantes to nuns and butlers to war heroes. More than one person will die before Miss Marple discovers the murderer.

Virginia, the daughter of Miss Marple's late cousin, must decide by the end of the weekend whether to accept a marriage proposal from George Lomax or to follow her heart and the courtship of another more adventurous suitor, Anthony Cade.

Dismayed by the odd array of guests, including socialist spinster Miss Blenkinsopp, Caterham's formidable eldest daughter Bundle and the quietly inscrutable maidservant Treadwell, Lomax castigates his affable assistant Bill Eversleigh, who also has a soft spot for Virginia.

It becomes apparent that Count Ludwig has taken a personal interest in Chimneys and a contract for the sale of the house is drawn up with Caterham. That same evening, in the middle of the night, the house guests are stirred from their beds by security and the Count cannot be found. The sound of a gunshot is heard from a secret passageway in the house and Count Ludwig is found dead in the arms of Anthony Cade. Why is Cade at Chimneys? And is Virginia's suitor being framed for murder?

A Chief Inspector arrives from Scotland Yard to investigate, enlisting Miss Marple's help. Together they discover a coded message in the pocket of the dead Count which could hold the key to the mystery. But when the bones of a young servant, murdered over twenty years ago, are uncovered Miss Marple begins to realise that the secret of Chimneys is darker than even she had realised.

Episode 3: The Blue Geranium
Miss Marple meets with her old friend Sir Henry Clithering, asking him for help with a troubling case. Did the wealthy and unpopular Mary Pritchard really die of shock when the geranium in her wallpaper turned blue in the village of Little Ambrose? Could a mysterious fortune-teller or a secret love affair help solve the mystery? With the body count on the rise, and no time to spare, Miss Marple and Clithering work together to find an ingenious killer and close the case once and for all.

Episode 4: The Mirror Crack'd from Side to Side
