Katee Sackhoff, 3 More Cast In A&E Pilot 'Longmire'

Battlestar Galactica alumna Katee Sackhoff has been cast as the female lead opposite Robert Taylor in A&E's hourlong pilot Longmire. Also cast in the project, based on the Walt Longmire Mystery series of novels by Craig Johnson, are Lou Diamond Phillips, Bailey Chase and Cassidy Freeman.

Longmire is named after its central character, Walt Longmire (Taylor), the charismatic, dedicated and unflappable sheriff of Absaroka County, Wyo. Widowed only a year, he is a man in psychic repair but buries his pain behind his brave face, unassuming grin and dry wit. Sackhoff, repped by Gersh and Bleu, will play one of Walt's deputies, hired six months ago after working homicide in Philadelphia for five years. Her relationship with Walt is filled with a playful give-and-take, while a deeper connection and sexual tension simmers beneath. Sackhoff, who co-starred on the final season of 24, recently did an arc on CSI. Phillips, repped by Global Artists and Thruline, will play Walt's best friend. Chase, repped by Gersh and Untitled, will play another deputy of Walt's. Freeman, repped by Kohner and Robyn Bluestone, will play Walt's daughter. Hunt Baldwin and John Coveny wrote the project and are executive producing with Greer Shephard and Mike Robin for Warner Horizon.

AMC first gained fame for its unusual stories of ad men in the 1960s and a chemistry teacher who cooks meth, but now it's headed toward more typically geeky fare. This started last October with the zombies of the The Walking Dead (cool!), and now it might continue with aliens (also cool!): The network is developing a series about mankind's first contact with aliens, and unlike everything else with Michael Bay's stamp on it that ends with explosions, human slavery, and lizard skin, this project as being described as a "realistic take." So no half-man, half-alien babies?[EW]

Consider this an announcement that an announcement is coming soon. Just a day after Lights Out was sent to the canvas by FX, word is that Justified and Archer are ripe for renewal. Expect official word soon, at which point you and I can exchange a very macho high-five. Eyes on the elbow! [Deadline Hollywood]

Oliver Stone is setting up a conspiracy drama for FX about a secret group of people who create fake news stories to advance clients' agendas. You know, like Fox News. [Deadline Hollywood]

From one remake to another! Justin Bruening, who starred in NBC's atrocious Knight Rider remake, has joined the cast of NBC's sure-to-be atrocious Wonder Woman remake. Bruening will play a possible love interest for the double-W, like duh, obviously. [TV Line]

Kyle Chandler Courted For FX's 'Powers

Friday Night Lights star Kyle Chandler, who turned down a slew of offers for broadcast pilots this season, is now being courted for FX's drama pilot Powers. Based on the graphic novel by Brian Michael Bendis and Michael Avon Oeming, the project, written by Charles H. Eglee and to be directed by Michael Dinner, is a police procedural set in a world where superpowers are relatively common. It  centers on two detectives, Christian Walker and Deena Pilgrim, in a homicide department that deals with cases involving "powers" (people with superpowers). Powers, from Sony Pictures TV and FX Prods., went through a couple of incarnations, including one with writer Kevin Falls.

Chandler has not committed to Powers and will not make a decision until he reads the new script. I hear the pilot was already slated to undergo a rewrite, which is now expected to incorporate notes from Chandler. So him signing for Powers is considered a long shot, but if he opts to do it, FX would successfully reunite the two Friday Night Lights leads -- Connie Britton recently signed on to star in American Horror Story, the Ryan Murphy-Brad Falchuk pilot for the cable network. At FX's upfront party last night in New York, FX president John Landgraf said that Powers, along with Outlaw Country, are contenders for an early 2012 series launch, while American Horror looks good for a fall 2011 premiere. Chandler has been very selective in choosing his TV follow-up to FNL, passing on a number of projects, including Terra Nova.
