Scoop: Maria Bello Closing In On Prime Suspect

The case of who’ll headline the U.S. reboot of the English-accented Prime Suspect is almost closed.

Sources confirm that Maria Bello (Law & Order: SVU) is in final negotiations to star as Det. Jane Tennison in the NBC version. Helen Mirren played the no-nonsense sleuth to massive acclaim (and a boatload of Emmys) in the U.K. original, so it goes without saying that Bello has extra-large shoes to fill.

Suspect has been in what Hollywood likes to call “development hell” for much of the past year. Originally slated as a 2010 midseason replacement series, the project was put on ice due, in part, to difficulties securing a leading lady. A new producing team led by Friday Night Lights‘ Peter Berg stepped in this fall and revived the pilot.

Lost's Michael Emerson Reunites With J.J. Abrams In CBS Pilot Person Of Interest

Lost alum Michael Emerson is set as a lead in Jonah Nolan’s CBS pilot Person Of Interest, which is being executive-produced by Lost co-creator J.J. Abrams.

The project, directed by Heroes‘ David Semel, is a crime drama centered on an ex-CIA agent, presumed dead, who teams up with a mysterious billionaire (Emerson) to prevent violent crimes in New York City.

An Emmy winner during his run on Lost, Emerson originally reunited with Abrams for a different project this development season: the action drama Odd Jobs, which was to star Emerson and fellow Lost alum Terry O’Quinn, with Abrams producing and Josh Appelbaum and Andre Nemec writing. That project landed at NBC in September, but was recently pushed to a later development timetable.

Emerson guest-starred on NBC’s Parenthood earlier this week.

Laura Benanti To Star In NBC's 'Playboy' And Other Pilot Castings

EXCLUSIVE: Tony-winning actress Laura Benanti is set to star in NBC's drama pilot Playboy. The project, from 20th TV/Imagine TV, is set at the Playboy Club in Chicago in 1963. Benanti will play Carol-Lynne, a 30-year-old bombshell and an established star at the Playboy Club who knows that her days as a Bunny are numbered. Benanti, who won a Tony for Gypsy, co-starred on ABC's Eli Stone and FX's Starved. She is with Innovative and Brookside Artist Management.

Nancy Lenehan (Worst Week) has been cast in CBS' comedy pilot How To Be A Gentleman, written by and starring David Hornsby. It revolves around a magazine that has changed ownership.  Lenehan, repped by  Pakula/King & Assoc. and Meghan Schumacher Management, will play Hornsby’s WASPy overbearing mother.

Tara Summers is set to co-star in the CBS drama pilot Ringer. The project centers on troubled young woman Bridget (Sarah Michelle Gellar) who, while on the run from the mob, hides out by inhabiting the life of her rich twin sister, Siobhan, until she learns that her twin’s life has a bounty on it as well. Summers will play Siobnah's best friend.

Kevin McNally has boarded ABC's pilot Poe, a crime procedural following Edgar Allan Poe, the world's very first detective, as he uses unconventional methods to investigate dark mysteries in 1840s Boston. McNally will play the tough and authoritative Commissioner Kyle Kilpatrick.

Eric Roberts To Star In ABC Pilot 'Grace', Two CW Pilots Find Leads

Eric Roberts is set to star in ABC drama pilot Grace, from creator-executive producer Krista Vernoff.  A dysfunctional family drama set in the world of professional dance, it centers on Michael Grace (Roberts), a famous choreographer who tends to sleep with his dancers and has three daughters  with different mothers. A much better dance teacher than he is a father, he is in danger of losing his studio until one of  his daughters steps in as studio manager. Mad Men helmer Lesli Linka Glatter is directing the pilot, which has added Flody Suarez as an exec producer.  Mia Michaels (So You Think You Can Dance?) will do the choreography. ICM-repped Roberts' series credits include Starz's Crash and NBC's Heroes.

Life Unexpected star Britt Robertson is returning to the CW as the lead of drama pilot Secret Circle. Written by Andrew Miller and Kevin Williamson based on the book series from The Vampire Diaries author L.J. Smith, Secret Circle tells the story of a young woman (Robertson) who moves to a new town and discovers that not only is she a witch and part of a secret coven, but she’s also the key that will unlock a centuries-old battle of good versus evil. Robertson, repped by Innovative and Levine Okwu Erickson, is about to start shooting the feature The First Time.

Wilson Bethel (Generation Kill) has joined the CW pilot Hart of Dixie, from writer Leila Gerstein, WBTV and Josh Schwartz and Stephanie Savage's Fake Empire. It is a comedic drama centered on Zoe (Rachel Bilson), a young New York City doctor who inherits a medical practice in a small Southern town inhabited by an eclectic and eccentric group of characters. Bethel will play a gorgeous flirty, bad-boy southern fisherman who is neighbors with Zoe, plays in a band and dedicates a song to her. Bethel, co-managed by Ryan Daly and KLWG, recently screentested for the title role in Captain America.

NBC Pilot 'Grimm' Finds Its Lead

EXCLUSIVE: David Giuntoli (MTV's Turn the Beat Around) has landed the lead in NBC's drama pilot Grimm. Created by David Greenwalt and Jim Kouf and to be directed by Marc Buckland, it is described as a dark but fantastical cop drama about a world in which characters inspired by Grimm’s Fairy Tales exist. Grimm centers on Nick Burckhardt (Giuntoli), a good-looking detective who starts to see humans as  beast/animals and discovered that he has a legacy - to protect "humans" from these beasts. Giuntoli, repped by CESD and Hofflund/Polone, was also cast by NBC last pilot season when he got a guest spot in the pilot for hourlong comedy Love Bites.

Kiefer Sutherland Eyes TV Return With Fox Drama Pilot From 'Heroes' Creator

EXCLUSIVE: Kiefer Sutherland is mulling a return to primetime with another Fox drama. The 24 star is in negotiations to topline drama pilot Touch, from Heroes creator Tim Kring. Like 24, Touch is produced by 20th Century Fox TV. Co-produced by Chernin Entertainment, Touch centers on a father (the role Sutherland has been offered) who discovers that his autistic, mute son can predict events before they happen. Kring wrote the project on spec, his first pilot script since Heroes. Charles McDougall, who has helmed the pilots for ABC's Desperate Housewives, ABC's The Good Wife and, most recently, Fox's The Chicago Code, is in talks to direct.

Complicating things are Sutherland's duties on Broadway where he currently stars in a revival of the Jason Miller's That Championship Season. The play, which marks Sutherland's Broadway debut, opened last week. In order for Sutherland to be able to do Touch, its production may have to be pushed. Sutherland, repped by CAA and Management 360, spent eight seasons on 24 playing CTU agent Jack Bauer. It became his signature role and earned him an Emmy Award in 2006.

'Lone Star' Leads Book Pilots: Jimmy Wolk To 'Georgetown', Eloise Mumford To 'River'

It's been a big week for the Lone Star leading trio. Adrianne Palicki (on right in the photo), was just cast as the new Wonder Woman in David E. Kelley's pilot for NBC. Now the show's star, Jimmy Wolk and other female lead, Eloise Mumford, have also been tapped for high-profile pilot gigs.

Wolk is set to headline ABC's drama Georgetown. The hourlong project, written by Will Fetters, is described as a sexy soap centered around the young people behind the power brokers of Washington, DC. It centers on Andrew Pierce (Wolk), an effortlessly charming and brilliant Yale graduate and the youngest Presidential speech-writer on record who was once idealistic but is now cynical as he sees how compromise has eroded the administration's promise. Georgetown hails from Warner Bros. TV and Josh Schwartz and Stephanie Savage's Fake Empire.

One of Wolk's two Lone Star leading ladies, Eloise Mumford (left), has become the first actor cast in another ABC drama, horror thriller The River. The project, from DreamWorks TV and ABC Studios, centers on  small group that goes deep into the Amazon in search for a missing TV explorer. Mumford will play  a fearless helicopter pilot attached to the expedition whose father, the TV explorer's camerman, is also missing.

In other pilot castings, Lauren Lapkus and Natalie Morales have joined NBC's Are You There Vodka? It's Me, Chelsea, a multicamera comedy inspired by Chelsea Handler's autobiographical book of the same name about her life in her 20s.

Leelee Sobieski To Star In CBS Pilot 'Rookies' Produced By Robert De Niro

EXCLUSIVE: Leelee Sobieski is set to star in CBS' drama pilot Rookies, an ensemble cop show from The Color of Money writer Richard Price, which is  executive produced by Robert De Niro and Jane Rosenthal through their Tribeca production banner. She is the first actor cast in the James Mangold-directed pilot, about six NYPD rookies who balance their personal lives with learning the beat on the streets of Manhattan. Sobieski will play one of them, Gen (White House) Perry, a golden-haired California girl and former member of the White House Color Guard who can handle herself whether dealing with a gang-banger or a busted toilet. Rookies reunites Sobieski with CBS where she had a breakthrough performance in the TV movie Joan of Arc, which earned her an Emmy nomination, and recently guest starred on the drama The Good Wife.

Trio Joins Fox Comedy Pilot 'Council Of Dads', ABC Adds To Drama Pilot 'Partners'

EXCLUSIVE: The Job and Rescue Me alumna Diane Farr is reuniting with the two series' co-creator Peter Tolan. She is set as the female lead in Fox's comedy pilot for Fox Council of Dads. Also set as leads in the project are Patrick Breen and SAG president Ken Howard. Inspired by Bruce Feiler's non-fiction book, the pilot, which is being directed by Anthony and Joe Russo, tells the story of Michael who, just before he dies, enlists five of his guy friends from all aspects of his life to become a “council of dads” to his two young children. Farr will play Michael's wife, recent widow Catherine, who is absolutely intent on complying with her husband's dying wish but quickly finds out that the five guys on the Council can agree about absolutely nothing. Breen and Howard will play two of the Council's members. Howard plays Michael's dad Burt,  ex-military guy who's not to be screwed with. Breen plays Jerry, Michael's ex-therapist who serves as the "Feelings Dad" on the council. Howard, repped by Greene & Assoc. and James/Levy, won an Emmy for Grey Gardens in 2009. He recurs on 30 Rock and is filming Clint Eastwood's Hoover. Breen, repped by Gersh and A Management, had also been pursued for NBC's Smash this season. Farr's other series credits include Numbers and Californication.

The Diane Farr-Peter Tolan pairing is not the only pilot reunion today. Third Watch alum Michael Beach has been added to ABC's drama pilot Partners, which is from Third Watch co-creator/exec producer Ed Bernero. The project  is a cop drama centered on two female police detectives, Mattie (Scottie Thompson) and Jess (Annie Wersching), who are fiercely loyal to one another since they're also secretly half-sisters. Beach will play a wise-cracking detective

Tim Allen Commits To ABC Comedy Pilot

After weeks of negotiations, Tim Allen has officially come onboard ABC's comedy pilot written by Jack Burditt. The project, first known as Man Up and then renamed to The Last Day of Man, is now untitled. The multicamera show, from 20th TV and 21 Laps/Adelstein Prod., centers on a guy (Allen) fighting for his manhood in a world of women. Burditt is executive producing with Marty Adelstein, Shawn Levy, Becky Clements as well as Allen and his managers Richard Baker and Rick Messina. The project landed at ABC in November with a pilot commitment with Allen loosely attached. If it goes to series, it would mark Allen's return to primetime and to ABC where he starred in the long-running hit Home Improvement.

Kat Dennings To Star In CBS' Whitney Cummings/Michael Patrick King Comedy

Kat Dennings has signed on as one of the two leads in CBS' multicamera comedy pilot Two Broke Girls, co-written and executive produced by former Sex and the City showrunner Michael Patrick King and comedian Whitney Cummings. Dennings is the first actor cast in the project, which centers on two girls from very different backgrounds - Max (Dennings), poor from birth,  and Caroline, born wealthy but down on her luck - who wind up as waitresses in the same Brooklyn diner, and strike up an unlikely friendship that could lead to a successful business venture... if they can come up with $250,000 in start-up expenses. After starting off in TV with a breakout lead role opposite Bob Saget on the WB sitcom Raising Dad and an arc on NBC's ER, Dennings, repped by CAA and Management 360, segued into features, including The House Bunny and Nick and Norah's Infinite Playlist. She will next be seen in Thor.

Rob Corddry To Lead Cast Of Fox Comedy Pilot 'Little In Common', Two Join 'Tagged

EXCLUSIVE: Rob Corddry is set to star in Rob Thomas' single-camera comedy pilot for Fox Little in Common. Paula Marshall is finalizing a deal to join him in the pilot, from by Warner Bros. TV, which is about 3 families united through their kids’ little league sports. It centers on the Caucasian, oh-so-proper Wellers (Corddry, Marshall) who move from San Jose, CA to Austin, TX, but find that their adjustment won't be quite that easy, considering that their Latino neighbors, the Pachecos, have a radically different approach to child-rearing than they do, while their other new neighborhood acquaintances, the African American Burlesons, take sports very seriously. Deal will allow Corddry, who has an overall deal at WBTV, to continue his work on Adult Swim's Childrens Hospital, which he created and executive produces with David Wain and Jonathan Stern. Corddry, repped by WME and Principato-Young, can be seen in Fox Searchlight's Cedar Rapids and recently wrapped the Weinstein Co.'s Butter.

Another Fox comedy pilot, Tagged, has added BJ Bales and Lindsey Kraft to the cast. The hybrid comedy, from Sony TV, Reveille and writers David Guarascio and Moses Port, is a workplace ensemble set at the Los Angeles County's coroner's office that centers on Wally Percy (Tommy Dewey) who, just fresh out of medical school, joins his father, respected coroner James Percy (Gary Cole), and his team at the coroner's office. Bales, repped by APA and Principato-Young, will play a church-going pathologist. Kraft, repped by Paradigm and Matt Sherman Management will play a brilliant pathologist who is an emotional basketcase

Five Broadcast Pilots Add To Casts

Eva Amurri (Californication) is set to star opposite Christine Lahti in CBS' medical-family drama pilot The Doctor, written by Privileged creator Rina Mimoun and directed by David Nutter. The project, from Warner Bros. TV, centers on a mother (Lahti) who reconnects with her two adult children - son David  and daughter Natasha (Amurri) when she joins the family medical practice.

Judy Marte, Tom Reed and Stark Sands have joined Leelee Sobieski in the CBS' drama pilot Rookies, an ensemble cop show from writer Richard Price, which is  executive produced by Robert De Niro and Jane Rosenthal. In the James Mangold-directed pilot, about six NYPD rookies who balance their personal lives with learning the beat on the streets of Manhattan, Marte, Reed, Sands and Sobieski play 4 of the rookies. NewsRadio alum Dave Foley has been cast in CBS' comedy pilot, buddy comedy How to Be a Gentleman created and starring David Hornsby. Based on the book of the same name, the project centers on Allan (Hornsby), an uptight guy learning to live his life with the help of his old high school classmate. Foley will play Allen's rumpled magazine editor.

Jenn Proske (Vampires Suck) has joined another CBS comedy pilot, Home Game. The project, loosely based on the experiences of former NFL star Mark Schlereth, centers on Mark (Rob Riggle), a retired NFL player who returns home to his wife Lisa (Constance Zimmer) and daughters. Patrick Wilson To Headline CBS Medical Drama Pilot Directed By Jonathan Demme

Feature and Broadway actor Patrick Wilson is making his first foray into series TV as the star of CBS' untitled Susannah Grant drama pilot. Jonathan Demme is directing he supernatural medical drama, from CBS TV Studios and studio-based Timberman/Beverly Prods., which centers on an ultra-competitive surgeon (Wilson) whose life is changed forever when his ex-wife dies and begins teaching him what life is all about from the here-after. Wilson's only previous TV gig was a co-starring role on the HBO miniseries Angels In America, which earned him an Emmy nomination. Wilson was approached by 3 drama pilots this season. As part of his deal for the Susannah Grant pilot, its production will be moved to New York where Wilson lives. CAA-repped Wilson most recently starred in the Sundance entry The Ledge.

Toby Stephens Cast In 'Prime Suspect'; Guillermo Diaz, Adam Campbell Board Pilots

Toby Stephens is set to star opposite Maria Bello in NBC's drama pilot Prime Suspect. The remake of the iconic British series starring Helen Mirren centers on Jane Timoney (Bello), an iconoclastic female detective who has to make her bones in a tough New York precinct that is dominated by men. Stephens will play Jane's live-in boyfriend who is fighting his ex-wife to allow their son to stay with him and Jane. Brit Stephens, repped by Paradigm and U.K.'s Independent, recently starred opposite Lucy Punch in the BBC dramedy Vexed and in the play The Real Thing at The Old Vic.

Guillermo Diaz (NBC's Mercy) has joined the cast of ABC's untitled Shonda Rhimes pilot, which revolves around the life and work of professional fixer Olivia Price (Kerry Washington) and her dysfunctional staff. Diaz will play a paralegal in the crisis management office who is also an expert hacker and does what he is told. He joins previously cast Columbus Short, Henry Ian Cusick and Katie Lowes. Diaz, repped by Innovative, Meghan Schumacher and Jill McGrath, recurs on ABC's No Ordinary Family.

Adam Campbell has become the first actor cast in NBC's comedy pilot My Life As an Experiment. The Sony/Reveille project exec produced by Jack Black, centers on magazine immersion journalist A.J. Wilder who explores all sorts of unique experience. Campbell will play his boss, the editor-in-chief of the magazine he works for.
