NBC picks up JJ Abrams spy drama

NBC has ordered a pilot for a new spy drama penned by JJ Abrams.

The show, which is being produced by Warner Bros. and Abrams' company Bad Robot, revolves around a husband and wife who work together in the espionage business.

The project has been the subject of a bidding war between NBC, CBS and ABC over the last week. ABC was the home of Abrams' similarly-themed drama Alias for five seasons.

NBC reduces 'Day One' to miniseries

NBC has announced that it has cut its order of sci-fi thriller Day One, opting to air the show as a four-part miniseries, says The Hollywood Reporter.

The programme had originally been slated to broadcast as a 13-part series but it has been suggested that NBC made the changes as part of a cost-cutting measure.

It will still premiere following the coverage of the Winter Olympics but it is believed that the move will give NBC the chance to evaluate its performance before deciding whether to order a series.

Creator and executive producer Jesse Alexander said that two hours of the show have already been filmed and he is now preparing the final two hours to wrap up the storylines but leave it open for a possible series.

He added: "I've been in discussions with the network for some time about the best way to launch what I truly feel is an awesome television programme."

Day One focuses on the aftermath of a global catastrophe that tears down the world's infrastructures and how a group of people come together to figure out what happened.

Crossing Jordan' star proposes on set

Former Crossing Jordan star Steve Valentine has reportedly proposed to his girlfriend in front of a live studio audience.

The actor, who played Dr Nigel Townsend in the series, popped the question to actress Inna Korobkina on the set of his new Disney XD series I'm In The Band.

Speaking to People, the star explained that he schemed with the cast and crew to stage a fake scene which saw him presenting Korobkina with an engagement ring.

"I was very emotional all day. Everyone cheered. Everyone was crying. It was a very lovely moment," he said.

He added that no date for the wedding has been set yet but joked that the couple "liked the idea of getting married in a winery".

I'm In The Band will premiere on Disney XD next year.

Letterman target of $2m sex blackmail bid

David Letterman has admitted to having sexual relationships with female members of his staff, revealing that someone tried to extort $2 million from him over the affairs.

Speaking on his CBS talkshow yesterday, the star explained that he received a package from an individual threatening to expose the relationships if the money was not paid.

He forwarded the information to the Manhattan district attorney's office in New York and testified before a grand jury.

The blackmailer was arrested on Thursday after being handed a fake cheque as part of the investigation.

"I have had sex with women who work on this show. Would it be embarrassing if it were made public? Perhaps it would, especially for the women," he told the audience.

"I feel like I need to protect these people - I need to certainly protect my family. I need to protect myself... I hope to protect my job."

The 62-year-old did not reveal when the relationships took place. He married his longtime girlfriend Regina Lasko earlier this year and the couple have a 5-year-old son together.

CBS has since confirmed that an employee who worked on 48 Hours has been charged with attempted grand larceny and suspended from his job.

ABC Family orders Melissa Joan Hart pilot

ABC Family has given the greenlight to a comedy pilot starring Melissa Joan Hart, according to The Hollywood Reporter.

The former Sabrina The Teenage Witch star has been tapped to play Hailey, a "political dynasty wild child-turned politician" in the untitled show.

The plot revolves around Hailey taking in her teenage niece and young nephew when her sister is jailed.

Joey Lawrence has signed on to play a "manny" who moves in to help the family.

The network has also handed a pilot order to an untitled single-camera project from Boy Meets World creator Michael Jacobs, which will centre around parenting philosophies.

The show will focus on a young father who is made redundant and begins to develop a closer bond with his "underdog middle daughter", while his wife acts as a mentor to their older child.

Both pilots are scheduled to film later this year.

'Star Trek' scribes to update 'Hawaii Five-O'

Star Trek writers Alex Kurtzman and Roberto Orci will update Hawaii Five-O for CBS.

The network previously announced that Criminal Minds executive producer Ed Bernero was penning a new version last year. At that time, the reboot was said to centre on the son of Steve McGarrett (Jack Lord) from the original series.

CSI: NY showrunner Peter Lenkov will now write the pilot script under the supervision of the Transformers: Revenge Of The Fallen screenwriters, Variety reports.

The trio will also serve as executive producers on the remake, which has received a pilot commitment from the network.

Kurtzman and Orci's previous television credits include Fringe and Alias, both created by Trek director J.J. Abrams.

Hawaii Five-O originally aired on CBS from 1968 to 1980.
