Serangoon Road Premiered on ABC1 & HBO Asia on September 22, 2013

1964-65. Singapore is a city at a crossroads. Political and racial tensions are at fever pitch as the British pull out, and a new nation is about to be born. The lights of Bugis Street have never burned so bright: bootleg copies of Motown songs boom out from street stalls; the Rolling Stones are in town along with tourists and American sailors fresh from Vietnam. They join British and Australian soldiers checking out the prostitutes and gambling dens en route to their own war in Borneo.

This is the city of Sam Callaghan, Patricia Cheng, the CIA’s Conrad Harrison and the clients of the Cheng Detective Agency. The agency’s cases range from the usual (straying spouses and petty fraudsters) to events with international implications and complications. Sam’s contacts from his military days are useful - but they start to drag him back into a dark world that he would prefer to leave behind.

It was a good job Crosby could out run the explosion and the fact he witnessed the sailors murder does put his life in danger from the killer or if he isn't charged himself as he was seen running away but the killer thinking he killed Crosby and got away with two murders was disappointing

Saving Claire in the alley was great but why leave her bag after they ran off was a waist of time as it looked like that's what they were after and what a sad story about Charlie dying saving another refugee after being separated from his wife at the outset of WW2 but finding out it was all a lie as she had married him and also tried to poison her was a surprise

Patricia was asking for trouble going to see a client during a riot especially as there was also a curfew so being attacked and robbed was a little predictable but Sam using an Embassy car to get around during the curfew was clever and finding her hand bag was a little unbelievable

Sam having to investigate Claire's husband Frank is going to make things awkward between them both but getting his documents back before he noticed them gone was a close call

Claire find out that the cheap diluted medicine was being given to sick children was lucky but the boy dying just before she got replacement drugs was sad and you just knew once they found out where the drugs were being diluted they would move them

If the newborn baby being left on the doorstep of the agency wasn't bad enough but in a rain storm could of been fatal but thinking Sam could be the father was amusing, finding out the mother died after giving birth was sad and the fact of who her family are they didn't want her family to know about the baby was unbelievable

Conrad catching one of the bombers only to be shoot in the head by the police was a surprise but what Kay did was unforgivable and considering he was warned before he was arrested for smuggling, Claire telling her husband about Sam had to happen sooner or later

Conrad being forced to spy to save his girlfriend from being deported was predictable and Sam using the roof top to follow one of the kidnappers was clever

I'm glad Sam found Angie's killer as nobody gave Robbo a chance and the girls that had been drugged were lucky that Patricia told Sam what was about to happen to them

Claire's husband wanting Sam to make a play for his wife before they leave was surprising but you can understand he doesn't want her leaving if she has feelings for Sam and for a moment I thought she would stay, you just knew that the box was going to explode as he approached it

Finally, decided to watch the series but, was disappointed to find that 3 episodes are missing and the series went off the air in 2009. Episode 9 is available on youtube...

Liked all the characters - (especially Kang and Su Ling) except for Claire and Frank was just an idiot. Seriously, how blind, dumb and in love do you have to be to notice that your wife is banging someone else.

Too bad the series ended....it had great bones and the atmospheric background made it so different
