About A Young Doctors Notebook

A Young Doctor's Notebook Premiered on Sky Arts on December  06, 2012

About the Show:
Daniel Radcliffe and Jon Hamm star in the latest instalment of Sky Arts' acclaimed Playhouse Presents strand. Based on Mikhail Bulgakov's collection of short stories A Country Doctor's Notebook, the series follows a recently-graduated young medic (Radcliffe) who is forced to say farewell to life in bustling Moscow to take up a post as a doctor in a small, remote hospital a thousand miles from the capital, and half a day's journey from the nearest shop.

Hamm plays the young doctor 17 years on, who finds his old diary while answering to the authorities about self-prescribing morphine. He has a series of comic exchanges with his young and inexperienced self, mocking him for his youthful looks and guiding him through his early difficulties on the job.

Fresh from achieving exceptional grades at the Imperial Moscow University, the naïve and freshfaced young doctor soon discovers he has a tough act to follow. Portraits and busts of his predecessor, the wizened Leopold Leopoldovich, fill the surgery's rooms and he is spoken of with great reverence by midwives Anna and Pelageya and the feldsher (Adam Godley). They show little faith in the new doctor who they barely believe is old enough to be qualified, whose surgery robes drag on the floor and who they remind to brush his teeth before bed.

The nervous doctor quickly finds himself out of his depth, sneaking off to examine text books during a tricky birthing and creating a gruesomely bloody scene when he is required to extract a rotten tooth.

A witty look at the young doctor's isolation and struggle to be taken seriously by his fellow staff and frustratingly backwards patients, this bleakly comic four-part drama proves humour can come from the unlikeliest of places. With brilliant performances from Radcliffe, Hamm and Godley, it also provides a unique and lively take on Bulgakov's short stories.

Looking for “the key” to ruin Abaddonn and “free” its employees, Amy orchestrates a meeting with Jeff Flender, a charming whistle-blowing journalist, sharing incriminating e-mails she printed out at work with Tyler’s IT password. Though he doesn’t find a story in the e-mails, Jeff encourages Amy to dig deeper and find more explosive evidence that could help bring down the company.

Episode 2: Revenge Play
Amy and a still-reluctant Tyler meet Jeff at a jazz club, where he reveals he’s already been working on a story about Abaddonn but needs proof of bribery, leading Amy to revel in her fantasies. When several top execs can’t log onto their accounts, Abaddonn’s breach of security is exposed, leaving Tyler scrambling to find a solution that won’t lead investigators to him or Amy. Suspecting foul play, Dougie vows to root out the true perps, while Krista is rushed to the hospital with a pregnancy complication.

Episode 3: Higher Power
Amy receives a letter from Levi, who’s still in Hawaii and has been bristling under theconstraints of Open Air, its holistic philosophy and his bodily-function obsessed roommate Tony. To cope, Levi escapes with a pair of fellow malcontents, Travis and Danielle, for a night of drugs, alcohol and debauchery at a nearby hotel. After pushing himself to his hard-partying limits, Levi decides he’s ready to return to Open Air and give rehab one more chance.

Episode 4: Follow Me
Amy becomes inspired to use social media to spread her message of change, and attends a gathering of liberal intellectuals at Jeff’s invitation. Dougie learns who hacked into Abaddonn’s system, but has second thoughts about reporting the breach to HR. Amy has a chance run-in with Abaddonn CEO Charles Szidon.

Episode 5: The Ghost is Seen
In an effort to dig up dirt on Szidon, Amy, Tyler and Dougie, who’s still irate over being betrayed by management, take turns trying to befriend Eileen, the CEO’s assistant. Eventually agreeing to join the trio for drinks after work, Eileen takes a shine to Tyler, who ends up with a guilty conscience when the two start dating.

Episode 6: All I Ever Wanted
In the giddy afterglow of finding “gold” in Szidon’s personal emails, Amy lets down her guard with Jeff, and indulges herself in daydreams of building a perfect life with a dashing journalist. The dream comes to an abrupt end, however, when Levi unexpectedly returns from rehab in Hawaii.

Episode 7: No Doubt
In hopes she will drop her crusade against Abaddonn, Tyler gets Eileen to arrange a meeting for Amy with Szidon, who turns out to have more compassion than Amy expected.
