LaBeouf ditches 'Y: The Last Man' role

Shia LaBeouf has said that he is "unwilling" to star in a movie adaptation of comic book Y: The Last Man.

The actor has been attached to the lead role in the DJ Caruso-directed movie, which follows a young man and his pet monkey who survive a plague that wipes out every mammal with the Y chromosome.

Speaking to Wizard, LaBeouf admitted that his interest in the project had cooled due to the character's similarity to his Transformers hero Sam Witwicky.

He said of Y's protagonist Yorick Brown: "You take Sam and you put a monkey on his shoulder. I don't know if it's that big a differential. It seems like he's the ordinary guy in an extraordinary situation again.

"I'm not willing to make that movie currently, and may be too old to play the role by the time it does come around."

LaBeouf can next be seen in Transformers: Revenge Of The Fallen, released in cinemas on June 19.

Fox 'not interested' in 'Alien' prequel

20th Century Fox reportedly does not want to make the proposed Alien prequel unless Ridley Scott directs it.

According to Entertainment Weekly, the studio is not prepared to let first time feature filmmaker Carl Rinsch take the reins of the franchise, preferring that original director Scott take his place.

It was revealed last week that Scott, brother Tony Scott and Michael Costigan will produce the new Alien, which takes place before the events of the first film, with Rinsch in the director's chair.

Rinsch, a commercials and music video director who has worked for Scott Free Productions, is also said to be dating Ridley Scott's daughter Jordan.

Scott helmed the original Alien, considered a sci-fi/horror classic, in 1979. James Cameron, David Fincher and Jean-Pierre Jeunet have directed subsequent instalments

Cohen leaves 'xXx', boards 'Medieval'

Rob Cohen has dropped out of directing Sony's xXx sequel to make Medieval for New Regency.

Cohen, who likened his new project to The Magnificent Seven in the Middle Ages, admitted that he found it difficult to back out of reuniting with Vin Diesel on xXx: The Return Of Xander Cage.

"It was a tough decision about xXx," he told Variety. "I talked to Vin over the weekend and said I hoped they would wait, but that if they find another director who's right for the sequel, I certainly wouldn't be angry. But I could not let something like this go."

The Medieval script, by Alex Litvak and Michael Finch, revolves around warriors from different cultures coming together to fight a common enemy. Terminator Salvation director McG is serving as a producer on the project.

Beaufoy back with Boyle for 'Maximum City'

Oscar-winning screenwriter Simon Beaufoy will work again with his Slumdog Millionaire director Danny Boyle on Maximum City.

It was recently confirmed that Boyle will return to Mumbai to make a big screen version of Suketu Mehta's book Maximum City: Bombay Lost And Found, which explores Mumbai's criminal underworld, the Hindu nationalist Shiv Sena party, the city's slums and the Bollywood industry.

"Maximum City is a non-fiction work, so it will be a huge challenge to find the story in it. It is a wonderful book and I used it in my initial research for Slumdog," Beaufoy told The Daily Telegraph.

"There are some great characters in the book, but no stories, so my job will be to get the fictional out of a non-fictional story."

He added of the book's setting: "It's such a vibrant, young city. Whereas in London, everything is in a sense hidden away, in Mumbai it's just all there in the open - all the emotion, all the characters."

'Harry Potter' IMAX date pushed back

The IMAX release for Harry Potter And The Half-Blood Prince has been pushed back by two weeks, it has been reported.

The sixth film in the popular franchise will arrive in general US cinemas on July 14, but will not be shown on IMAX screens until July 29, according to The Hollywood Reporter.

The delay is said to be down to Warner Brother’s decision to postpone the film’s original release of November 2008, conflicting with the specialised theatres' month-long commitment to Transformers: Revenge Of The Fallen.

The IMAX version of the Daniel Radcliffe-starring picture includes an additional 12 minutes of 3D footage.

Harry Potter And The Half-Blood Prince opens in the UK on July 15.

Galifianakis wants Jonas Bros for 'Hangover 2'

Zach Galifianakis has admitted that he would like to see The Jonas Brothers appear in a sequel to The Hangover.

Galifianakis's socially maladjusted character Alan reveals an unlikely fondness for the pop trio in the comedy film, which centres around three men on a Las Vegas bachelor party who lose the groom 48-hours before the wedding.

"It'd be cool if they brought The Jonas Brothers in and I get to meet them, then I faint!" Galifianakis told DS.

Co-star Ed Helms added: "You're excited to do anything you can to promote The Jonas Brothers. They need all the help they can get."

Speaking about plans for a sequel, Galifianakis noted that it would be difficult to top the risqué humour of the first movie.

"I don't know what we could do to out-do this one, that's the fear," he commented. "Todd [Phillips] the director is only going to want it to be raunchier. It's the only level it could go to."

'Puss In Boots' to feature 'all new characters'

Shrek spin-off movie Puss In Boots will feature all new characters, it has been reported.

Antonio Banderas has signed up to reprise his role as the voice of the swashbuckling feline, while none of the original film's parts will star in the origin tale, Movie Hole reports.

"No, all new characters - except Puss," said screenwriter David H. Steinberg. "It doesn’t overlap with Shrek at all.

"Partly that was done to tell an original Puss story, but partly because we didn’t know what Shrek 4 - and now Shrek 5 - were going to do with the characters and we couldn’t write conflicting storylines."

Banderas recently spoke out about the project, saying: "It goes in a different way, and the movie sometimes gets almost emotional, I may say, and it's kind of epic."

Puss In Boots has a 2012 release date, while Shrek Forever After is scheduled to arrive in cinemas in 2010.

'Pirates 4' a "priority" for Disney

Producer Jerry Bruckheimer has said that a new Pirates Of The Caribbean movie is a "priority" for Disney.

Speaking to ComingSoon.net, Bruckheimer revealed that the studio is eager to make Pirates 4 with Johnny Depp before he stars as Tonto in a new Lone Ranger movie.

"It's a great franchise for them and for us, too," Bruckheimer said. "We love the character and Johnny was really excited about coming back to Captain Jack. He certainly is interested in Tonto, but Disney's priority is to get Pirates made first. You never know what's going to happen, but they would like it."

Series director Gore Verbinski left Pirates 4 to helm video game adaptation BioShock. However, Verbinski has since suggested that he may not make BioShock, leaving the door open for a Pirates sequel return.

"He created the franchise so we'd love to have him back," Bruckheimer said of Verbinski's potential return, "but it's kind of up to him."

Next Bond film 'set in Afghanistan'

Online reports have suggested that the next James Bond film may find 007 fighting in Afghanistan.

Speculation started on Bond fansites after a Foreign Office worker in the Helmand province signed up to work as a consultant for the spy franchise.

The individual has reportedly signed a confidentiality agreement to prevent them discussing the follow-up to 2008's Quantum Of Solace.

Bond previously visited Afghanistan in Timothy Dalton's 1987 outing The Living Daylights, in which the secret agent was imprisoned in a Russian camp in the country.

Eon Productions has refused to comment on the rumours.

Little Fockers' about "death, divorce"

Little Fockers writer John Hamburg has said that the comedy sequel will incorporate themes of "death and divorce".

Speaking to IGN, Hamburg insisted that these more serious elements would be dealt with in a "really comic way".

"We're catching up with these characters five years later and Pam and Greg have twins so they are dealing with that," he said.

"And people are dealing with where they're at in their lives, and themes of death and divorce and all these real things that as we get older, we start to think about, but in a really comic way."

Little Fockers, to be directed by Paul Weitz, will follow Gaylord "Greg" Focker (Stiller) and his wife Pam Byrnes (Teri Polo) and their continuing attempts to win approval from grumpy father-in-law Jack (Robert De Niro).

Owen Wilson's character Kevin Rawley is expected to appear in the film in an expanded role.

Stars attend 'Ghostbusters' anniversary

Dizzee Rascal, Nikki Grahame and DJ Ironic were among the celebrities at a Ghostbusters party in London last night.

"When Sigourney Weaver's nightie came away when she lifted off the bed because Zorr was in there being quite erotic as well, as erotic as you can get for a five-year-old from South East London."

A third Ghostbusters flick is currently being developed by Lee Eisenberg, Gene Stupintsky as well as original stars Harold Ramis and Dan Aykroyd.

LeBeouf: 'I can't handle fame'

Shia LeBeouf has admitted that he has major insecurities about his fame.

The Transformers star revealed that he does not want to become obscure in Hollywood and parks his bicycle along busy streets in the hope that people will recognise him, Contact Music reports.

He told Parade magazine: "I don’t handle fame well. Most actors on most days don’t think they’re worthy. I have no idea where this insecurity comes from, but it’s a God-sized hole. If I knew, I’d fill it, and I’d be on my way."

The 23-year-old also said that he fears his stardom could disappear at any time.

He added: "Sometimes I feel I’m living a meaningless life and I get frightened. I know I’m one of the luckiest dudes in America right now. I have a great house. My parents don’t have to work. I’ve got money.

"I’m famous. But it could all change, man. It could go away. You never know."

Transformers: Revenge Of The Fallen opens in the US and UK on June 24.
