Melissa Leo cast in 'The Fighter'

Melissa Leo is in final talks to join the cast of The Fighter, reports Variety.

The Oscar-nominated actress will play the mother of Christian Bale and Mark Wahlberg's characters. David O. Russell is directing the movie, which is inspired by the true story of Boston boxer "Irish" Mickey Ward (Wahlberg) and his journey to become the world lightweight champion aided by his half-brother Dicky Eklund (Bale).

Wahlberg told Digital Spy last November that he has been "training for two years" to prepare for The Fighter.

"It's more than a passion project," he said. "It's always been a dream of mine, a childhood fantasy to play a great champion."

Production is scheduled to begin on The Fighter this summer.

Jolie ruled out of 'Tomb Raider 3'

Tomb Raider 3 producer Dan Lin has ruled out the possibility of Angelina Jolie reprising her role as Lara Croft.

Speaking to About.com at the US premiere of Terminator Salvation, Lin confirmed that the latest instalment will be a prequel featuring a "younger Lara Croft".

He said: "We're rebooting Lara Croft. It's a great origin story that we're going to tell. Very character-oriented [and] I would say more realistic than the past movies."

Lin explained that he wanted to make the new Tomb Raider "character-driven".

"I think for me the Lara Croft games and movies have gone a little too action-oriented," he commented. "I wanted to have action, but with character."

Warner Bros announced earlier this year that it is reviving the blockbuster franchise. Megan Fox was initially rumoured for the lead role but the talk was subsequently denied.

Hopkins 'not reprising Lecter role'

Universal has denied that Sir Anthony Hopkins is to reprise his role as Hannibal Lecter in a fourth movie.

It had been rumoured that the Oscar-winning actor and director Ridley Scott were on board for a new sequel to The Silence Of The Lambs.

However, Moviehole claims that the report was an old item mistakenly reposted regarding the making of 2001 film Hannibal.

A Universal rep said: "The New York Post website probably reposted a few archived articles, and unfortunately Google has picked this one up, believing it's re-posted date to be the same day the story was written.

"They even quote a Variety article in there - you're going to be hard-pressed to find such an article at Variety after 2001. Bottom Line: It's the old pre-Hannibal story getting another-run again. There's no new movie."

McG: 'No more Charlie's Angels films'

McG has revealed that he will not helm any more Charlie's Angels films.

The Terminator Salvation director, who steered the first two films based on the popular ’70s TV show, said that he would like to focus exclusively on science fiction-related projects.

Star Drew Barrymore and producing partner Nancy Juvonen are reportedly keen to film a third Angels outing with co-stars Cameron Diaz and Lucy Liu.

"I'm trying to grow and work in genres that I'm most comfortable working in," McG told Mania. "I got started in Charlie's Angels, and I wish them every success with another sequel.

"But these are the films that I grew up feeling very passionate about. The Terminator. Blade Runner. The Kubrick pictures."

Terminator Salvation opens in the US on May 21 and the UK on June 3.

The Dreamgirls star also admitted that she was unhappy with the 15lbs she shed for her role as Deena Jones in the movie.

Steven Spielberg's newly-announced Martin Luther King biopic is facing a a lawsuit from two of the civil rights leader's children.

It had been reported that Spielberg and DreamWorks had gained permission from the King Estate to make the first movie about the assassinated human rights activist. However, Bernice King and Martin Luther King III have voiced their opposition to the project, claiming that King Estate CEO Dexter King does not control the copyright for their late mother Coretta Scott King's papers.

"This is a deal that Mr Spielberg and his people... have entered into believing that they have the blessing of the King Estate," The AP quotes Bernice King as saying. "They don't have the blessings of Bernice and Martin King."

Dexter King released a statement yesterday insisting that he had the sole say in allowing access to his father's intellectual property.

"The King Estate is committed to working very closely with DreamWorks [and producers] Suzanne de Passe and Madison Jones, whom we chose to create the first major motion picture on the life of Martin Luther King Jr," the statement said.

'Twilight' tipped to top DVD sales

An online shopping company has predicted that Twilight will be the bestselling DVD of the year.

Price comparison website Kelkoo based its prediction on recorded DVD, music and book sales related to the teen vampire franchise, as well as the number of searches for the disc it has logged in recent weeks.

It said that this year's sales of the film had already matched those seen for Mamma Mia!, which became the bestselling DVD ever on Amazon, The Daily Telegraph reports.

Kelkoo marketing director Lloyd Price said: "Twilight has made a successful transition from its beginnings as a book with a mainly teenage cult following, to a mainstream movie franchise which has attracted a large volume of soundtrack CD and DVD sales.

"Twilight's initial popularity in the US appears to be gathering momentum across Europe at a fast pace with a large fan base also in the UK. It's on course to be the DVD of the year."

'Spider-Man 3' actress takes own life

Spider-Man 3 actress Lucy Gordon has been found dead in her Paris apartment, reports Sky News.

The 28-year-old, who appeared as British reporter Jennifer Dugan in the blockbuster film, was found hanging from the ceiling of her home near the River Seine.

"It was a horrific scene. The young woman had taken her own life in terrible circumstances. We are not seeking anyone else. It was a clear case of suicide," said a police officer.

Agents for Oxford-born Gordon have since confirmed that the actress "ended her own days".

Gordon had appeared in over a dozen films, including The Four Feathers, Serendipity and Perfume. She had recently completed work on Vie Heroique, a biopic of singer-songwriter Serge Gainsbourg currently previewing at the Cannes Film Festival.

"We are devastated by this news. All those attending the festival had been hugely impressed by Lucy's work," said a festival organiser. "She was a star in the making."

Parker: I haven't seen 'SATC 2' script yet

Sarah Jessica Parker has admitted that she is unsure what will happen in Sex And The City 2 because she has not seen the script.

The actress, who plays writer Carrie Bradshaw, told Access Hollywood that the only certainty is that her character will have to learn to cope with the economic crisis.

"I think it’s going to be very interesting - or, it should be, because you know, our country has changed significantly in a year," she explained.

"[She] will have been affected and she’s not an idiot. She’s gonna have to change her thinking about indulgence."

Discussing rumours that Carrie will be pregnant, she said: "Well, first of all, I really don’t know because I haven’t seen a script. I know an outline."

When pressed that she must know something, she joked: "I know, I know. I can’t pretend anymore! I feel like you’re looking inside my soul. I won’t tell you."

Sex And The City 2 will begin filming in August, with a scheduled May 2010 release date.

'Terminator' fails to impress critics

Terminator Salvation has been met with generally unfavourable reviews by US film critics.

The hotly-anticipated sci-fi sequel, directed by McG and starring Christian Bale and Sam Worthington, has failed to impress the movie industry's top reviewers.

Roger Ebert of the Chicago Sun Times said that the blockbuster "raises many questions about the lines between man and machine. Raises them, and then leaves them levitating", adding that the relentless action sequences "give all the pleasure of a video game without the bother of having to play it".

Time's review criticised Christian Bale's performance as freedom fighter John Connor, calling it "surprisingly soulless, hitting the same dour notes he uses for Batman", while The Hollywood Reporter said that "there's little sign of life where the flatly executed human component is concerned".

Screen International's John Hazelton said that the film possesses "very little of the human drama - or humour - that gave the original films their broader appeal".

The New York Times, however, was happier with the franchise's latest entry, noting that it has "a brute integrity lacking in some of the other seasonal franchise movies" and "feels both comfortable with its limitations and justly proud of its accomplishments".

Terminator Salvation opens today in the US and in the UK on June 3.

Cooper dismisses 'A-Team' rumours

Bradley Cooper has dismissed rumours that he's been cast in the upcoming A-Team movie.

The actor insisted that he has not signed on to portray Lt. Templeton "Faceman" Peck in the big screen version of the US TV show, Contact Music reports.

The Yes Man star said that comments he recently made about the project were taken out of context.

"I haven't read a script or met (director) Joe Carnahan," he told Chud.com.

Bruce Willis, Woody Harrelson, and rapper Common have all been rumoured to star in the 2010 flick, while Star Trek’s new Captain Kirk, Chris Pine, has previously admitted that he would like to play "Howling Mad" Murdock.

Cooper was also touted for the title role of the Green Lantern earlier this month.

Gervais 'did Museum for the money'

Ricky Gervais has said that he accepted a role in Night At The Museum 2 for the money.

The comedian told London Lite that he enjoyed making the sequel and would gladly appear in a third instalment if asked to by lead actor Ben Stiller.

Gervais said: "I did it for the money. I just spent two days trying to put Ben off his lines.

"It's fun. I'd do another film with Ben if he asks, though I don't know where it could be set. Maybe a normal museum where nothing comes to life and all you see is the admin. Naturalise it a bit more."

Stiller recently joked that working with Gervais was "much better than nothing".

Box Office Preview: 'Terminator Salvation' and 'Night at the Museum 2' square off

Forget the Smithsonian, the real battle this Memorial Day weekend will take place in multiplexes, where the family adventure comedy Night at the Museum: Battle of the Smithsonian faces off against Terminator Salvation. Yes, both Twentieth Century Fox and Warner Bros. are bringing out their big guns for the holiday, and with Angels & Demons and Star Trek still angling for eyeballs, it's sure to be a big one. My predictions for the four-day, Friday-through-Monday weekend are below.

1. Night at the Museum: Battle of the Smithsonian -- $80 million
Don't discount that family crowd. Few family-friendly flicks (save Hannah Montana ) have opened since Monsters vs. Aliens bowed at the end of March. The return of Ben Stiller and his troupe of historic figures who come to life is beloved by kids of all ages (the first installment banked $250.9 mil domestically about two years ago), and an IMAX opening will help it even more. Plus, the always adorable Amy Adams portrays Amelia Earhart -- and The Thinker statue comes to life!

2. Terminator Salvation -- $75 million
While McG's reimagining of James Cameron's Terminator franchise will close the weekend with the most cash in its pockets (because it actually opened a day early, on Thursday), it's likely to end up in second place for the four-day frame -- if only by a small amount. The last time a Terminator movie bowed, it was back on the 2003 Fourth of July holiday, to a tune of $72.5 million over five days. This time around, with Christian Bale and next-big-thing Sam Worthington getting an above-the-title credit, the movie could do a lot more business. Expect a $90 million five-day debut.

3. Star Trek -- $35 million
Talk about legs. Audiences love J.J. Abrams' Star Trek reinvention, so expect a solid hold for its third weekend in theaters. Terminator Salvation will be its biggest competition, but we've got four days, people! That's a lot of time to see movies.

4. Angels & Demons -- $23 million
What little buzz Tom Hanks' sequel had last weekend (which it won, barely) has all but evaporated. So the Dan Brown adaptation may have a hard time keeping the momentum going into its second frame. Thus, Angels & Demons should see a drop in the 45-50 percent range, as it turns its attention to overseas box office, where its real revenue will come from.

5. Dance Flick -- $10 million
Paramount is releasing this dance-film-genre spoof in 2,450 locations, and fans of the Wayans Brothers will likely show up. The question is: How many Wayans fans are still around?
