Benedict Cumberbatch 'cast as villain in Star Trek 2'

Benedict Cumberbatch has been cast in Star Trek 2.

The British actor, who has previously starred in Sherlock, War Horse and Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy, will play the villain in the JJ Abrams movie alongside Alice Eve and Peter Weller.

According to Variety, Carlos star Edgar Ramirez auditioned for the role last month, but ultimately lost out to Cumberbatch.

Former Doctor Who actor Noel Clarke also recently signed up to appear in the Star Trek sequel. His role is yet to be revealed, but he is rumoured to be playing a "family man with a wife and young daughter".

The script for Star Trek 2 has been written by Alex Kurtzman, Roberto Orci and Damon Lindelof and is scheduled for release in May 2013.

Abrams recently revealed that the movie will receive post-conversion 3D, saying: "We're shooting on film, 2D, and then we'll do a good high-end conversion like the Harry Potter movie and all that. Luckily, with our release date now we have the months needed to do it right, because if you rush it, it never looks good."

Ghost Rider: Spirit of Vengeance' a "mad film", says Ciaran Hinds

Ghost Rider: Spirit of Vengeance star Ciaran Hinds has said that fans can expect a "mad" movie from directors Mark Neveldine and Brian Taylor.

The former Rome star, who portrays the Devil in Nicolas Cage's Marvel sequel, told Digital Spy that he was surprised to be offered a role in the blockbuster.

"It's a genre I don't know," Hinds said. "That was something I didn't think I would ever be involved in. I do Shakespeare! I wear breeches and do Jane Austen! And then this is just mad, so different.

"I don't know how it'll turn out - probably just this mad kind of film that certain people of a certain age will get into."

Asked about his interpretation of Satan, the Northern Irish actor explained: "Playing the Devil in human form - I didn't know what level to play it at. They just said, 'Give us your stuff', but it's not fire and brimstone."

Hinds also teased a scene with Cage which sees the Devil confront Johnny Blaze.

"I did get to meet Nic Cage, which was a thrill. A very nice, very professional man. Very good, very sharp," he commented. "We only had one scene, where he gave me a punch in the jaw and sent me miles away!"

Ghost Rider: Spirit of Vengeance will open in cinemas on February 17, 2012.

Jessica Chastain in talks for Osama bin Laden takedown film

It’s the graceful, delicate mom from The Tree of Life vs. the most repellent terrorist in the world.
Guess who wins?

Jessica Chastain is in talks to co-star in director Kathryn Bigelow’s upcoming film about the death of Osama bin Laden, according to sources close to the project.

The actress, who broke big this year in The Tree of Life and The Help, would not play one of the SEAL Team 6 members who actually conducted the raid, but instead would take on the role of a field intelligence analyst whose work helps lead to the strike that annihilates him.

While she’s known for her range in a number of movies last year, they are often more fragile figures, though she did show her tough side as a novice Mossad agent seeking a Nazi war criminal in John Madden’s The Debt.

She had a busy 2011, and 2012 looks no different. Chastain, who recently wrapped work on the Guillermo del Toro-produced horror film Mama, will also be making her Broadway debut later this year in an adaptation of Henry James’ The Heiress.

Sony Pictures intends to release the untitled bin Laden movie on Dec. 19, 2012. Bigelow, who won director and best picture Oscars for the Iraq War drama The Hurt Locker, has been working on the project with screenwriter Mark Boal (who also won an Oscar for his script and shared the best picture honor) since before the May 2011 attack that killed bin Laden in Abbottabad, Pakistan.

History just happened to give them a much more compelling ending.

Deadline reported Thursday that two other actors are also circling the project: Mark Strong and Edgar Ramirez. Meanwhile, more ominous news shadowed the film as the cast was being assembled. The Pentagon’s inspector general announced an investigation into whether the Defense Department improperly shared information about the raid with the filmmakers.

Representatives for Boal and Bigelow declined to comment. Chances are, given the investigation, they will stay tight-lipped on the subject for a while.

Sony representatives say they also prefer not to comment at this time.

JJ Abrams: 'Benedict Cumberbatch is a genius

JJ Abrams has opened up about the casting of Benedict Cumberbatch in Star Trek 2.

Robert Downey Jr: 'Iron Man 3 could be best superhero movie ever

Robert Downey Jr has predicted that Iron Man 3 could be one of the best superhero movies of all time.

The third instalment of the Iron Man series will shoot in Wilmington, North Carolina, with Kiss Kiss Bang Bang director Shane Black taking over from Jon Favreau.

Downey Jr has commented that he views Iron Man 3 as a chance to take the saga of Tony Stark to new heights.

"I think that we have an opportunity with the third Iron Man to make the best of the three, and maybe one of the better superhero movies that's ever been made," the actor told Omelete.

He went on to say: "I think we have to remember what made the first one good. It was very character-driven. It was very odd. It was kind of outrageous. And so I think we have to have the courage to trust that the audience is really kind of cool, and smart."

Clark Gregg, who plays S.H.I.E.L.D's Agent Coulson in the Iron Man series, has joked that he is afraid his character will be killed off in the third movie.

Iron Man 3 is scheduled for a May 3, 2013 release.

Jaimie Alexander is in discussions to reprise the role of Sif in Thor 2.

The actress played a supporting role as the warrior goddess in the first film alongside Chris Hemsworth, Natalie Portman and Tom Hiddleston.

"I'm a comic book nerd at heart, so I'd like to see the relationship between Thor and Sif progress," she told MTV News.

"Whether or not they do that, we're not sure yet. We'll see. I think that element will be in there, but I don't know how much."

Alexander also hinted at a possible appearance in Joss Whedon's Avengers movie.

"I can't tell you," she said when asked if she would feature in the ensemble film.

"Sometimes you never know. It'll be funny - they'll call you and they'll do a post-credits scene and you go, 'Oh, so everything I said in interviews is completely wrong'. So you never know!"

Thor 2 is currently being rewritten by Saving Private Ryan screenwriter Robert Rodat.

The Taken actor starred in the 2010 movie revival of the '80s TV series, which also featured Bradley Cooper, Quinton 'Rampage' Jackson and Sharlto Copley as the titular group of mercenaries.

"I don't think it made enough money," he told the Daily Express. "The studio don't want it."

Neeson recently backed the appointment of Ricky Gervais as host of the Golden Globes, saying that Gervais will shake up Hollywood's elite.

Josh Trank has reportedly emerged as the frontrunner to direct Fox's Fantastic Four reboot.

Judge Dredd': Karl Urban will not remove his helmet

Karl Urban will not remove his helmet in the Judge Dredd movie, the character's creator has revealed.

John Wagner has revealed some more facts about Lionsgate's adaptation of the 2000 AD strip, and the reasons that he thinks the 1995 Sylvester Stallone version failed.

"Dredd homes in on the essential job of judging," Wagner told the Los Angeles Times.

"Instant justice in a violent future city... The plot is about Dredd and his world. It's impossible to cover every aspect of the character and his city. Perhaps that was one of the failings of the first film. They tried to do too much and ended up with not a lot."

He said that he had not watched the former adaptation since its release.

"They told the wrong story," Wagner continued. "It didn't have that much to do with Dredd the character as we know him. I don't think Stallone was a bad Dredd, though it would have been better and lent him more cred if he hadn't revealed his face. He was just Dredd in the wrong story. I envy their budget, though. Some of the CGI was very good."

Wagner also praised the stars of the new film, saying: "Olivia Thirlby is perfect as Anderson, the young Psi-Judge. She gives the character a touching vulnerability. Karl Urban will not remove his helmet and will not kiss his co-star."

Sometime Judge Dredd artist Jock has previously said that the film "looks great".

Dredd's face has famously never been shown in the comic.

The Adjustment Bureau star, who can next be seen in the upcoming movie Man on a Ledge, revealed that he is a big fan of the buddy cop action films.

"I love those psychological thrillers," he added. "I'm going to be the young Danny Glover."

The actor went on to say that he would like Chris Evans to take the role of Riggs (originally played by Mel Gibson) in his proposed Lethal Weapon reboot.

"When I think of a young hothead who's full of hot air I think of Chris Evans," Mackie said. "Isn't he a guy you just want to smack around?"

In addition to Man on a Ledge, Mackie will also star in Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter opposite Benjamin Walker.
