Mortal Kombat' movie reboot gets green light

Mortal Kombat is to be rebooted for cinema, it has been confirmed.

Warner Bros and New Line Cinema announced that Kevin Tancharoen will direct the project, which is based on the popular video games.

Tancharoen has prior experience as a choreographer and music video director, having helmed the 2009 remake of Fame. He also directed the 2010 YouTube hit Mortal Kombat: Rebirth and the Mortal Kombat: Legacy web series.

The movie reboot is reported to be a new take on the subject matter, reuniting Tancharoen with Rebirth writer Oren Uziel. Shooting is scheduled to commence next year.

Tancharoen told Coming Soon: "It's very exciting! I'm so happy that I've been a gigantic fan of this title since I was a little kid. This is a dream come true for me.

"I'm really happy that New Line and Warner Bros saw the potential after the Mortal Kombat: Legacy webseries we did and the numbers that the video game has done. I'm extremely grateful because it's been a big, big journey for me."

Mortal Kombat was originally adapted for cinema in 1995. It later spawned sequel Mortal Kombat: Annihilation and tie-in television series Mortal Kombat: Konquest.

Warner Bros and New Line's reboot is slated for release in 2013.

Training Day' director Antoine Fuqua attached to 'Hunter Killer'?

Antoine Fuqua has signed up to direct the thriller Hunter Killer.

The film centres on an American submarine captain and a group of Navy SEALS who have to rescue the kidnapped Russian president, Variety reports.

Street Kings writers Jamie Moss, Arme Schmidt and John Kolvenbach have based the screenplay on Don Keith and George Wallace's unpublished book Firing Point.

Salt's Philip Noyce and Taken's Pierre Morel have both been attached to the project, which was first optioned by Relativity in 2008.

Fuqua is also involved in several other projects, including an untitled film based on the life of rapper Tupac Shakur and a biopic of gangster Pablo Escobar.

The Training Day director reportedly wants Javier Bardem and Benicio del Toro to star in the project.

In June, it was reported that Eminem wanted Fuqua to direct his new vehicle Southpaw.

Southpaw is about a welterweight champion who recovers from a personal tragedy by rising in the world of boxing.

Christopher Nolan, Michael Bay for 'Twilight Zone' remake?

Christopher Nolan and Michael Bay are among the directors being scouted for a forthcoming Twilight Zone movie.

The Dark Knight Rises and Transformers masterminds have been approached by Warner Bros to helm an adaptation of the fantasy horror series, Variety reports.

Sources claim that Nolan is the frontrunner, although he is reluctant to join the project due to its similarities to Inception.

Bay, meanwhile, is allegedly torn between his fondness for the script and his passion project - bodybuilder comedy Pain and Gain.

The Warner Bros wishlist is also said to include Children Of Men director Alfonso Cuaron, Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows helmer David Yates and Rupert Wyatt, who crafted summer blockbuster Return to the Planet of the Apes.

Unlike the 1983 Twilight Zone film, in which four directors produced different segments, the new picture will be overseen by one person and feature a single storyline.

Leonardo DiCaprio is due to produce the movie through his Appian Way firm.

A biopic of Twilight Zone creator Rod Serling was announced in July

Olivia Wilde Lands ‘Rush’ Role Of Suzy Miller; Russell Crowe For Richard Burton Cameo?

EXCLUSIVE: It’s a role that a lot of actresses wanted, but I’m told that Olivia Wilde will play 1970s supermodel Suzy Miller in Rush, the Ron Howard-directed Formula One drama about the rivalry between drivers Niki Lauda (Daniel Bruhl) and James Hunt (Chris Hemsworth). Cross Creek’s Brian Oliver is producing with Imagine’s Brian Grazer and Working Title partners Tim Bevan and Eric Fellner. Cross Creek funded the film with Exclusive Media Group.

Miller fell in love with and married Hunt, a handsome, womanizing driver, but the most interesting part of their relationship is how Miller soon fell in love with Hunt’s actor pal, Richard Burton. Hunt and Burton famously negotiated a “transfer” of assets, with Burton paying the $1 million divorce settlement that Hunt owed Miller. Burton and Miller were married shortly after.

I’m told that Howard hopes to recruit his A Beautiful Mind star Russell Crowe to play the small role of Burton in the Peter Morgan-scripted film. Wilde, who’ll next be seen starring in Butter, is repped by WME and Untitled along with UK-based Hamilton Hodell.

Jason Statham for two 'Fast & Furious' films?

Jason Statham is reportedly in talks to star in the latest instalment of the Fast & Furious franchise.

The British Transporter actor has begun discussions with Universal to appear in the follow-up to Fast Five, according to Twitch.

Universal are also allegedly planning on producing two back-to-back films of the action series, with shooting set to take place in Europe next year.

The studio is reportedly hoping for Fast Six to be released on May 24, 2013, with Fast Seven coming out either the following Christmas or summer.

The plot of Fast Six may take place in Germany, due to the post-credits scene in Fast Five which saw agent Monica Fuentes (Eva Mendes) tell Lucas Hobbs (Dwayne Johnson) that Michelle Rodriguez's deceased character Leticia is actually alive in the country.

Fast Six was confirmed earlier this year, with Vin Diesel, Paul Walker and Dwayne Johnson expected to reprise their roles.

Johnny Depp: 'I would do more Pirates of the Caribbean movies

Johnny Depp has said that he will continue making Pirates of the Caribbean films.

The Rum Diary star confessed that as long as he receives a pay cheque, he will continue to reprise his role as Captain Jack Sparrow in the Disney films.

"Basically, if they're going to pay me the stupid money right now, I'm going to take it," Depp told Vanity Fair. "I have to. I mean, it's not for me. Do you know what I mean? At this point, it's for my kids."

He continued: "It's ridiculous, yeah, yeah. But ultimately is it for me? No. No. It's for the kids."

Depp is said to have reduced his fee for Disney's big-screen version of Lone Ranger in order to reduce the film's predicted budget of $250 million (£159.8m).

The Lone Ranger is expected to start production in early 2012 after being axed by Disney in August due to the budgetary concerns.

Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides star Sam Claflin has said that he is hoping to come back for a sequel to the blockbuster.

Rowan Atkinson rules out 'Mr Bean' return

Rowan Atkinson has ruled out a return for his comic alter ego Mr Bean.

The Johnny English: Reborn actor believes that his take on the popular character, who he once described as "a child in a grown man's character", would not be convincing anymore.

"I've always regarded Mr Bean as an ageless, timeless figure," he told Radio 1's Newsbeat, echoing previous comments he made about the comic creation.

"I don't want him to particularly grow old, and if I carry on playing him then he's going to get older, whether we like it or not. I would like to remember Mr Bean how he was five or ten years ago."

The 56-year-old revealed last week that he is open to the possibility of reviving Blackadder.

Atkinson played Mr Bean in a series of one-off stories between 1990 and 1995 on ITV. Released in 2007, the film Mr Bean's Holiday was the franchise's last outing.
