John Carter: World of Mars' announced by Marvel

Marvel Comics has announced a prequel series to Disney's upcoming action-adventure John Carter.

John Carter: World of Mars will give readers an inside look at the history of author Edgar Rice Burroughs's main characters before they come together in Disney's epic adaptation next year.

The four-issue miniseries is being penned by New York Times best-selling author Peter David with interior art from The Dark Tower penciler Luke Ross.

"We're thrilled to bring fans their first look at the world of John Carter before the blockbuster film wows audiences next year," Marvel editor-in-chief Axel Alonso said following the announcement. "It's been a pleasure working with Disney, Peter and Luke to craft a powerful story that will appeal to both the legions of John Carter fans and those who are new to this exciting world."

John Carter director Andrew Stanton has worked closely with both companies on the project, and has admitted that he is "thrilled" to bring the pulp classic to life.

"I have wanted to see this property on the big screen since I was a young boy and hope that John Carter: World of Mars will excite and inspire fans of the series much like I was inspired many years ago," Stanton added.

John Carter stars X-Men Origins: Wolverine actor Taylor Kitsch in the titular role, opposite the likes of Lynn Collins, Willem Dafoe, Thomas Hayden Church and Mark Strong.

John Carter: World of Mars #1 is released in October, while Disney's John Carter film is scheduled to open in cinemas worldwide on March 9, 2012.

Jennifer Lawrence to join Mark Wahlberg in 'Silver Linings'

Jennifer Lawrence is in talks for David O Russell's next film Silver Linings.

The movie centres on a depressive former high school teacher who finds himself forced to live with his mother after he is released from care.

While trying to reconcile with his wife, he starts a romance with his eccentric neighbour, who deals with her husband's recent death by embarking on several love affairs.

Mark Wahlberg, who starred in Russell's The Fighter, will take on the lead role.

Lawrence is reportedly eyeing the part of the neighbour, which has also been linked to Blake Lively, Andrea Riseborough, Rachel McAdams and Anne Hathaway.

In June, Russell was said to be interested in casting Kirsten Dunst and Elizabeth Banks for the role.

Russell is adapting the story from Matthew Quick's novel.

Lawrence is currently working on the adaptation of The Hunger Games trilogy, in which she plays fighter Katniss Everdeen.

The Oscar-winning actress said in May: "The cool thing about Katniss is that every fan has such a personal relationship with her, and they understand and know her in a singular way."

Wahlberg is attached to several other projects, including the confirmed follow-up to boxing drama The Fighter.

Shooting on Silver Linings is expected to begin in the autumn.

Oscar Isaac to play Jeremy Renner's 'Bourne Legacy' enemy

Oscar Isaac has signed up to play the villain Number Three in The Bourne Legacy.

The actor will be joining lead Jeremy Renner, Edward Norton and Rachel Weisz in the movie, Deadline reports.

Number Three is a brainwashed assassin who comes up against Renner's character. Director Tony Gilroy originally considered Isaac for the central role in the film.

In February, he was on a shortlist with Michael Fassbender, Paul Dano, Luke Evans, Taylor Kitsch and Benjamin Walker.

Gilroy has described the character played by Renner as a "new hero" and not a replacement for Matt Damon's Bourne.

The director also described the film as a "stand-alone project" rather than a sequel.

Isaac has previously appeared in Sucker Punch and will next star in Cannes hit Drive, alongside Carey Mulligan and Ryan Gosling.

The actor also recently completed filming on Madonna's feature-length directorial debut W.E. about the American Duchess of Windsor, Wallis Simpson.

Hugh Jackman confirms 'The Wolverine' enemy

Hugh Jackman has revealed that The Wolverine will feature the Silver Samurai as an antagonist.

Speaking at San Diego Comic-Con about his new robot-boxing movie Real Steel, the actor said that he would fight the Japanese mutant Kenuichio Harada in the sequel to the 2009 film X-Men Origins: Wolverine, according to GeekTyrant.

The legendary director confirmed during the Tintin panel at Comic-Con 2011 that a story for the long-awaited dinosaur sequel is now in place.

"We have a story, I can happily announce right now," he said. "We have a writer... Hopefully, we'll be making Jurassic Park 4 in the near future. In the next two or three years."

Jurassic Park 4 has been stuck in development since the project was first announced in 2002.

Reports that Spielberg was working on the film's plot emerged back in June, despite prior suggestions from Jurassic Park star Sam Neill that a follow-up was "unlikely" to get made.

Hellboy 3' is still possible, says Guillermo Del Toro

Guillermo Del Toro and Ron Perlman have suggested that a third Hellboy film could still happen.

Despite recent speculation that a third comic book adaptation of the Dark Horse character was unlikely to happen, Del Toro and Perlman revealed at Comic-Con International this weekend that it was still under discussion.

Del Toro said during the panel: "I carried Don't Be Afraid of the Dark thirteen years. I carried Hellboy for almost eight years before it got made, so I'll stick to [a project] until it gets made.

"The reality is, each of those movies have been an incredible ordeal to make. [Hellboy] was an $89 million (£54.6 million) movie [but] I wound up making it for $50 million (£30.6 million) because nobody wanted a red guy."

Del Toro added: "The third one is the hardest one because it's the darkest one and not necessarily has a happy ending. The third one is epic. It's gigantic."

Perlman, who portrayed the titular character in 2004 film Hellboy and its 2008 sequel Hellboy 2: The Golden Army, said that he is still keen to round off the franchise with a final entry.

"There are things that are introduced in the first two films that have to be resolved in the third one," the actor added. "So for us to not make the third film would be kind of an injustice to [the fans]."

Hellboy creator Mike Mignolasaid last month that he could not see Del Toro ever getting around to making a third film due to the huge amount of projects he is involved with.

Nicolas Cage to play double role in 'Ghost Rider 2

Nicolas Cage is to play both the human and the supernatural side of Marvel superhero Johnny Blaze in Ghost Rider: Spirit of Vengeance.

The actor is to replace the CGI version of the supernatural character seen in the original, Superhero Hype reports.

"One of the things this movie gave me the chance to do, which I didn't get to do in the first one, is play Ghost Rider, which is interesting to me because it's all about how do you move if you're from a different dimension?" Cage told the site.

Cage admitted that he will base the paranormal character on a cobra.

"[Directors] Brian Taylor and Mark Neveldine and I all got in a room and explored different movements and body language, referenced some animals - and cobra kept coming back to me," he said.

In February, the actor said that the script will bring out the more "supernatural" elements of the comic character.

Crank director Taylor has also claimed that the sequel is "completely different from its predecessor".

Highlander star Christopher Lambert was rumoured to be interested in appearing in the film in an unspecified role.

However, Eva Mendes revealed last year that she will not be reprising her role in the 2007 film as Cage's love interest Roxanne Simpson.

The Bourne Legacy' brings back Joan Allen, Albert Finney

Joan Allen and Albert Finney are in negotiations to reprise their roles in Bourne franchise continuation The Bourne Legacy.

Allen played CIA deputy director Pamela Landy in The Bourne Supremacy and Bourne Ultimatum, while Finney featured in the latter as Albert Hirsch, a doctor in the Treadstone programme that trained Jason Bourne.

The pair will join Edward Norton, Oscar Isaac and Rachel Weisz in the supporting cast for the spy thriller.

Michael Clayton director Tony Gilroy's new Bourne will jettison Matt Damon's character and centre on one of his fellow Treadstone operatives, to be played by Jeremy Renner (Mission: Impossible - Ghost Protocol).

Damon last year voiced his support for the Bourne series's change in direction, but suggested that he and director Paul Greengrass may return to the franchise at some point.

"I think it's a smart thing to do. It doesn't interfere with Paul and me doing a movie," he said of Gilroy's Bourne Legacy plot. "Tony doesn't want to hurt the Bourne story. So as I understand it, Jason Bourne is alive in the world that Tony's going to create. I don't appear in it, but it's very much that world."

The Bourne Legacy will begin production this year for release in August 2012.
