Christopher Meloni confirms 'Man of Steel' casting

Former Law & Order: Special Victims Unit star Christopher Meloni will not portray Lex Luthor in Zack Snyder's upcoming reboot Superman: The Man of Steel.

Following reports yesterday that Meloni had been cast in an unknown role, rumours began to circulate that Meloni would portray Clark Kent's arch-nemesis, due to his resemblance to the comic book villain.

However, while he has so far refused to elaborate on his role in the film, Meloni has confirmed that he has been cast as "a general".

"I can't tell you, or I'd have to kill you," Meloni told Vulture when pressed for further details.

Meloni did confirm that he begins shooting the film at the end of August for the next five months across Chicago, Vancouver and Edwards Air Force Base in California.

The actor is best known for starring on Law & Order: SVU as Detective Elliot Stabler for the past 12 seasons until his decision to leave earlier this year.

Snyder's comic book reboot already has an expansive cast, including the likes of Henry Cavill, Amy Adams, Antje Traue, Michael Shannon, Diane Lane and Kevin Costner, while Russell Crowe and Julia Ormond are expected to portray Superman's Kryptonian parents.

Superman: The Man of Steel will begin filming later this year, ready for a release in December 2012.

Green Lantern' sequel 'still planned to go ahead

Warner Bros is reportedly keen to begin work on a Green Lantern sequel despite the first film's mediocre box-office performance.

Green Lantern topped the US box office last week, but suffered a 66% drop off this weekend, bringing its overall domestic total to $89.3 million.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, Warner are said to be "somewhat disappointed" by the film's performance, but are still keen to continue the DC Comics franchise.

Warner president of domestic distribution Dan Fellman downplayed the importance of the drop-off, insisting that Green Lantern was still settling in, and that fanboy films always suffer an initial decline in their second week of release.

Green Lantern stars Ryan Reynolds, Blake Lively and Peter Sarsgaard, and cost around $200 million to produce before marketing, but has so far received a poor reception from critics.

Reynolds recently admitted that he had already begun researching further Green Lantern stories in the hope that there is a second film.

Shia LaBeouf 'doesn't want to be Tom Cruise'

Shia LaBeouf has revealed that he does not want to become a Hollywood superstar like Tom Cruise.

The Transformers: Dark of the Moon star stated that he has no desire to be in the public eye all the time, according to the Los Angeles Times.

"The way Steven [Spielberg] described it to me was, 'When Tom Cruise walks outside his house, he doesn't pick his nose. From the minute he leaves his door to the minute he comes back home, he doesn't pick his nose'," the 25-year-old said. "Now that's a certain way to live your life that I have no ambitions toward."

LaBeouf went on to say that he has no idea what his next project will be.

"There's this coming-of-age thing that's happening within me," LaBeouf said. "I've come from family-fare, pop-culture, Steven Spielberg-safe, made-for-a-generalized-populace [projects], and I have these yearnings to do different things. Which way is this boy gonna go? Thomas Jane fired from Headshot for not being "ethnic"?

Thomas Jane has spoken out about being fired from the upcoming action movie Headshot.

Jane was cast opposite Sylvester Stallone in the film earlier this year. However, producers later dropped Jane from the movie, which Jane now claims was in order to cast an "ethnic" actor in the role.

The Deep Blue Sea star said that he initially had good feelings about the project, especially after Stallone took his advice and brought Walter Hill on board as director.

"Well, [producer] Joel Silver came on board the project and said that he has a quote-unquote 'formula' for these quote-unquote 'buddy movies' and it has to be a white guy and a quote-unquote 'ethnic guy'," Jane alleged during a recent interview with Collider.

"And they relieved me of duty and basically paid me off, which I was really upset about, you know. I didn't get a call from Stallone, I was a little upset about that. Maybe they didn't want anybody on the movie with a bigger d**k than him."

When asked whether he would have taken a different role if the film's producers had offered it, Jane said that he would probably have refused due to feeling like "the spurned lover".

The film stars Stallone as a New Orleans hitman who is forced to work alongside a New York policeman to solve a murder.

It was recently announced that American actor Sung Kang has been cast in the film as Stallone's unlikely partner.

Headshot is expected to reach cinemas in 2012.

Jeff Bridges to join sci-fi 'The Giver'?

Jeff Bridges is reportedly in talks to join an upcoming adaptation of science fiction story The Giver.

The Lois Lowry book of the same name was published in 1993. It follows a 12-year-old boy in a futuristic utopian society that has deleted all human memory and emotional depth, described as 'Sameness'.

The boy is then appointed as the 'Receiver of Memory', storing all the original memories before the deletion in case they are required for community decisions that the citizens are no longer able to make.

The True Grit actor told Variety that he felt it would be an interesting role to take on, though he wanted his father Lloyd to star in it before he died.

Bridges said: "I originally thought of the role of The Giver as a vehicle for my father, the late Lloyd Bridges; however, at 61 years old, I feel the time is right for me to do it".

Bridges would play the role of a wise elder if he agrees a deal. Harry Potter director David Yates has been named as a possible director.

The Giver won the 1994 Newberry Medal, which is awarded for the best young adult fiction novels.

Jeff Bridges previously joined an adaptation of undead comic R.I.P.D., alongside Ryan Reynolds. He is also due to release his first solo album, following the success of music film Crazy Heart.

Bonaventura went on to say that he hopes to reunite the main cast of the original, which includes Helen Mirren, Bruce Willis, John Malkovich and Morgan Freeman. He also revealed that new characters will join the roster.

A potential release window for the RED sequel is yet to be announced.

Chris Hemsworth has signed up to the crime thriller Shadow Runner.

The film is inspired by the true story of an Israeli assassination team which tracked Hamas leader Mahmoud al Mabhouh to a hotel room in Dubai in order to kill him, according to Deadline.

Hemsworth would be taking on the role of the leader of a special team of operatives assigned to politically fraught missions.

Executive producer Hossein Amini is working with Hemsworth on the upcoming Snow White and the Huntsman.

Kenneth Branagh 'not returning to direct Thor 2'

Kenneth Branagh will not return as Thor 2 director.

Chris Hemsworth will reprise his starring role in the sequel without the helmer of this year's summer blockbuster, according to Deadline.

Disney has set July 26, 2013, as the date for the release of Thor 2.

The decision for Branagh to step down was reportedly "mutual and amicable".

Ben Foster joins Ridley Scott's 'Prometheus

Ben Foster has signed up to Ridley Scott's deep space thriller Prometheus.

The Pandorum star joins confirmed cast members Michael Fassbender and Idris Elba in what has been described as an
independent "original science fiction epic" from Scott's Alien.

A new official synopsis of the script has also been dropped by the studio in order to scupper rumours about the plot.

20th Century Fox said in a statement: "Visionary filmmaker Ridley Scott returns to the genre he helped define, creating an original science fiction epic set in the most dangerous corners of the universe.

"The film takes a team of scientists and explorers on a thrilling journey that will test their physical and mental limits and strand them on a distant world, where they will discover the answers to our most profound questions and to life's ultimate mystery."

It backs up recent comments made by Lost creator and screenwriter Damon Lindelof suggesting that the film had turned into an "independent feature".

He said: "I've always felt that really good prequels should be original movies. So a true prequel should essentially precede the events of the original film, but be about something entirely different."

This is despite the fact that aliens called Xenomorphs from the Alien franchise were spotted on set in April.

Adrianne Palicki Joins 'G.I. Joe: Cobra Strikes'

EXCLUSIVE: Friday Nights Lights series star Adrianne Palicki will play the female lead in the Paramount sequel to G.I. Joe: Cobra Strikes. She'll play Lady Jaye and joins a cast that includes Channing Tatum, as well as Dwayne Johnson, who signed on to play the role of Roadblock in the Jon M. Chu-directed film.  Ray Park is expected to reprise his Snake Eyes character, Byung Hun-lee is expected to bring back Storm Shadow, and RZA just joined the film. The studio's casting quickly; they need the film for next summer because the Star Trek sequel won't be ready and this rebooted film and World War Z are prime candidates to fill summer slots. The big question is who Paramount sets in the role of the original G.I. Joe, Joe Colton. I've heard Bruce Willis as a top choice, but last time I checked the studio was eyeing several actors, insiders said. Script's by Rhett Reese and Paul Wernick and Lorenzo di Bonaventura is producing the Hasbro property.

As for Palicki, she's free because the Wonder Woman pilot didn't get picked up. She'll next be seen starring in Red Dawn and her screen credits include Legion, Women in Trouble and Lone Star. She's repped by UTA, Anonymous Content and David Fox.
