Barry Humphries to join 'The Hobbit

Barry Humphries has joined the cast of The Hobbit.

The Australian actor and comedian, who is best known as the man behind character Dame Edna Everage, has accepted the role of the Goblin King in the upcoming Peter Jackson-directed movie.

Jackson wrote on Facebook: "Barry is perhaps best known for his business and social connections as the long-time manager of Dame Edna Everage. He has also been an ardent supporter of the rather misunderstood and unfairly maligned Australian politician, Sir Les Patterson.

"However, in his spare time, Barry is also a fine actor, and we're looking forward to seeing him invest the Goblin King with the delicate sensitivity and emotional depth this character deserves."

Benedict Cumberbatch was recently confirmed as a voice of dragon Smaug in the Lord of the Rings prequel.

Sir Ian McKellen, Cate Blanchett, Orlando Bloom, Sir Ian Holm, Sir Christopher Lee, Hugo Weaving, Elijah Wood and Andy Serkis will reprise their roles from the Lord of the Rings trilogy, while cast newcomers include Richard Armitage, Stephen Fry, Sylvester McCoy, Bret McKenzie, James Nesbitt, Lee Pace, Aidan Turner and Luke Evans.

The Hobbit movies will be divided into two parts. The first movie, An Unexpected Journey, will be released on December 14, 2012. The second film, There and Back Again, follows on December 13, 2013.

Evangeline Lilly joins cast of 'The Hobbit

Evangeline Lilly has become the latest addition to the cast of The Hobbit.

The former Lost star, who gave birth to her first child with boyfriend Norman Kali last month, will play an elf called Tauriel in Peter Jackson's adaptation of the JRR Tolkien novel.

Jackson wrote on his official Facebook page: "Evangeline Lilly will be playing a new character - the Woodland Elf, Tauriel. Her name means 'daughter of Mirkwood' and, beyond that, we must leave you guessing! (No, there is no romantic connection to Legolas.)

"What is not a secret is how talented and compelling an actress Evangeline is; we are thrilled and excited she will be the one to bring our first true Sylvan Elf to life."

Jackson also confirmed that the first block of shooting has now finished and that location scouting for the second production block is underway.

He added: "Evangeline and Barry [Humphries], along with Welsh actor Luke Evans as Bard and Benedict Cumberbatch as Smaug, just about rounds out the major casting. I cannot wait to get stuck into these new scenes!"

Lilly's former partner Dominic Monaghan made his movie breakthrough in Jackson's Lord of the Rings trilogy playing hobbit Merry Brandybuck.

The Hobbit will be divided into two parts.

The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey will be released on December 14, 2012 and will be followed by The Hobbit: There and Back Again on December 13, 2013

Simon Pegg for bigger 'Mission: Impossible' role

Simon Pegg has revealed that his role in the upcoming Mission: Impossible - Ghost Protocol is more substantial than in the third film.

The Paul star will reprise his role as Benji Dunn, a colleague of Tom Cruise's former character Ethan Hunt.

He told Collider: "I had two days on Mission: Impossible III. That was it. I did seven months on the fourth one so yeah, I go back."

Pegg added that it seemed unlikely that Cruise would make an appearance to hand over his secret agent duties to his replacement Jeremy Renner.

"Looking at the film as it is, I don't think so. It's anyone's guess really," he said of a possible Cruise cameo. "It certainly sets up a new IMF agent who can return and who is an Ethan level player. We'll see. I honestly don't know."

Pegg has described the fourth Mission: Impossible film as a reboot of the franchise rather than a sequel.

He recently admitted to Digital Spy that the chances of him and writing partner Nick Frost making a Paul sequel are slim.

Mission: Impossible - Ghost Protocol opens in US and UK cinemas on December 16.

Ron Howard to direct Formula 1 movie 'Rush'?

Ron Howard has reportedly been lined up to direct a Formula 1 movie.

The project, titled Rush, is currently in development and will chart the rivalry between world champions Niki Lauda and James Hunt in the 1970s.

Green Zone director Paul Greengrass had originally been attached to the project, according to the Los Angeles Times's 24 Frames blog.

However, two anonymous production insiders claim that he has since departed to pursue other projects.

A representative for Howard told Entertainment Weekly that his adaptation of Stephen King's Dark Tower books would still begin production early next year.

Lauda, who is a triple Formula 1 world champion, almost lost his life in a serious accident at the 1976 German Grand Prix which left him with severe scarring from burns.

He now works as a motorsports commentator for German broadcaster RTL.

Hunt, who was famed for his playboy lifestyle and eccentricity on and off the track, won the world championship once in 1976 with McLaren.

He later worked alongside Murray Walker as a commentator for the BBC, but died of a heart attack in 1993 at the age of 45.

Peter Morgan, who collaborated with Howard on Frost/Nixon, has written the script for Rush.

The movie is currently being pitched to Hollywood studios, and it is envisioned that shooting will begin in Europe later this year.

It was reported last year that I Am Number Four actor Alex Pettyfer hopes to play Hunt in a self-produced adaptation of Tom Rubython's biography Shunt: The Story of James Hunt.

James Cameron 'not planning Avatar trilogy

James Cameron has revealed that the upcoming Avatar sequels will not round out a trilogy.

The Titanic director stated that he is writing two separate scripts for Avatar 2 and Avatar 3 respectively, promising that the films will each be able to stand alone, according to Fox News.

"We're shooting two films back-to-back, so I'm writing two scripts, not one, which will complete a free-film story arc - not really a trilogy, but just an overall character arc so I'm pretty excited about that," Cameron said.

Cameron went on to state that while he feels the pressure to write quality sequels, he is not letting himself become overly stressed.

"There's always an expectation," the 56-year-old said. "I had to deal with that after The Terminator back in 1984. All of a sudden I had a big hit movie and it was, 'What are you doing next?' But my job is take the audience on a journey and entertain them. The second I am sitting down writing, I just go to Pandora. The characters have their own lives."

Ioan Gruffudd recently described Cameron as having a "Jekyll and Hyde" personality, claiming that while the director can be difficult on set, he is perfectly charming off set.

Cameron predicted in April that there will be a 100% take-up of 3D technology in cinemas over the next five years, stating that he also hopes to see an expansion of the technology into the home.

The two Avatar sequels are scheduled to be released in December 2014 and 2015 respectively.

Ryan Gosling 'won't rush Logan's Run remake

Ryan Gosling has said that he and director Nicholas Winding Refn won't rush their planned Logan's Run movie.

The duo, whose new film Drive screened at the Cannes Film Festival and opens in cinemas this September, will remake the cult '70s science fiction film with producer Joel Silver and Warner Bros.

"Joel said the other night, 'Take your time and make it good. It doesn't have to be ready at any point'," Gosling told the Los Angeles Times.

The 1976 Logan's Run took place in a utopian world where life must end at 30. Michael York starred as Logan, a "Sandman" who tracks down those who try to escape death. It is based on William F. Nolan's novel, in which the age of termination is 21.

Refn noted that the original movie is "dated in the sense that everything came true".

"They've been trying to make it for years with the notion of just trying to remake the original movie," he said. "And it has to be rethought."

Bryan Singer and Tron: Legacy director Joseph Kosinski have previously tried to mount remakes of Logan's Run.

"We'll put together a team of futurists and artists and we'll dream on this world," Gosling said.
