Darren Aronofsky quits 'The Wolverine'

Darren Aronofsky has quit the director's chair for 20th Century Fox's The Wolverine.

The Oscar-nominated Black Swan director released a statement saying that he exited the blockbuster because it would have taken him away from his family for an extended period of time.

Fox had planned to film a large portion of the Christopher McQuarrie-scripted Wolverine, which sees the title character become a samurai, in Japan.

Aronofsky said: "As I talked more about the film with my collaborators at Fox, who have been totally supportive throughout my work on the movie, it became clear that the production of The Wolverine would keep me out of the country for almost a year.

"I was not comfortable being away from my family for that length of time. I am sad that I won't be able to see the project through, as it is a terrific script and I was very much looking forward to working with my friend Hugh Jackman again."

Aronofsky and Jackman worked together on the 2006 sci-fi romance The Fountain.

Fox said that they are "aggressively" drawing up a shortlist of potential replacements for the director; however the studio is yet to officially give the Marvel Comics adaptation a greenlight.

"While we are of course disappointed that Darren can't do The Wolverine, we also understand and respect his reasons," said the studio in a statement. "Having done both The Wrestler and Black Swan with Darren, we know he is an extraordinary talent and we look forward to working with him on other projects in the future.

"Hugh Jackman and Fox both remain fully committed to making The Wolverine. We will regroup and move forward aggressively."

Duncan Jones reveals Simon Pegg movie idea

Moon director Duncan Jones has revealed that he wants to make a movie with Simon Pegg inspired by Peeping Tom.

Speaking to Big Fanboy, the BAFTA-winning filmmaker admitted that he would like to make a "tongue-in-cheek" black comedy version of Michael Powell's 1960 thriller.

"I talked to Simon a little bit about something," Jones said. "There's this crazy, really, really dark film from the '60s called Peeping Tom. I was thinking Simon Pegg doing a real tongue-in-cheek version of that could be really funny because it's so dark. We'll talk and catch up and see what happens."

Peeping Tom, about a murderer who films his victims as they're dying, was a critical and commercial failure on its initial release but has since attained cult status and been endorsed by Martin Scorsese.

Last November Peeping Tom was re-released in UK cinemas to mark its 50th anniversary.

Jones's latest movie Source Code opens in cinemas on April 1.

Amazing Spider-Man' villain revealed

The Outsiders star C. Thomas Howell has inadvertently revealed the identity of the main villain in next year's Spider-Man reboot.

During a Retroradio podcast, the actor discussed his supporting role in The Amazing Spider-Man, before confirming that The Lizard will indeed be the film's primary antagonist.

"I play a construction worker whose son is caught in the middle of a battle between The Lizard and Spider-Man on the Manhattan bridge," Howell revealed. "Spider-Man helps me get my son back from this perilous situation."

The actor also claimed that the film will focus more on the public's fear and mistrust of Spider-Man than Sam Raimi's original trilogy did.

"Part of the story is the nation thinks he might be a bad guy," Howell explained. "Spider-Man is kind of hurting. I help him when all of the other people won't."

The inclusion of The Lizard in Marc Webb's reboot has been rumoured ever since Rhys Ifans was cast in an unknown role last year, but Sony have yet to make an official announcement regarding the film's villain.

The Lizard, a long-running enemy of Spider-Man in the comic book series, was created when Peter Parker's lecturer Dr Curt Connors injected himself with reptile DNA in an attempt to regrow a lost limb, but instead ends up turning himself into a mindless monster.

The Amazing Spider-Man is scheduled to be released in 3D on July 3, 2012.

Liam Neeson back on for 'Taken 2

Liam Neeson is said to have "all but signed on" to star in the sequel to his 2008 hit Taken, despite earlier reports that suggested that he might pull out of the film.

It was believed that director Luc Besson was considering recasting the lead role of retired government agent Bryan Mills, due to Neeson insisting that he be allowed to take the rest of the year off.

However, according to Deadline, Besson has now negotiated with Neeson to delay filming on Taken 2 until early next year.

Besson will once again write the film's script, and is said to have tapped The Transporter 3 director Olivier Megaton to helm the project.

Work on a sequel to Taken has been underway ever since the first film proved to be an unprecedented success upon its release.

Among the actors believed to have been under consideration to replace Neeson were the likes of Sean Bean, Mickey Rourke and Ray Winstone.

Taken 2 will now commence filming in Istanbul in early 2012.

José Padilha confirms new 'RoboCop' rumours

Brazilian director José Padilha has confirmed that work on the upcoming reboot of Paul Verhoeven's 1987 sci-fi classic RoboCop is already underway.

The director, long thought to have been tapped to helm the project, admitted during an interview with Motion TV Online that negotiations with the franchise's parent company MGM have already finished.

"It is about doing a new movie, and we're working on it at the moment, and the negotiations are closed already," Padilha explained. "It's a project I'm developing from the very beginning together with Josh Zetumer, and there's no deadline really.

"When the screenplay turns out good enough, then we will start shooting," the director confirmed.

Padilha, best known for his work on the popular Brazilian Elite Squad series, said that he can bring a new perspective to the '80s franchise.

"I think [MGM] saw my movies and felt there was something there that could bring to the present day this controversial, yet different, violent movie which is RoboCop without misrepresenting it," he added.

MGM shelved the potential reboot in July last year due to financial troubles, but last month announced plans to move ahead with the project.

Ghost Rider 2' is "pretty much a reboot

The Ghost Rider sequel will be "100% different" from the original movie, its director Brian Taylor has revealed.

The Crank helmer, who took charge of Ghost Rider 2: Spirit Of Vengeance with long-time collaborator Mark Neveldine, described the forthcoming movie as "pretty much a reboot" of the Nicolas Cage-starring series.

Discussing his disappointment with the 2007 comic book film, Neveldine told Total Film: "We basically said, we want to do it, [would] absolutely love to do it, but it's gotta be 100% different from the first movie, everything, except for Nic.

"We want the character to look different, feel different, sound different. The backstory of the character's different, the origin of the story is expanded upon in ways that the first movie didn't hint at, at all.

"It's pretty much a reboot, only with the same actor, which makes it: a requel. Or a seboot, I can't decide which one I like better...The first attraction was Nic and the second was the character and just how cool it could be. [I wanted to] kinda make the Ghost Rider movie that I wished I had seen before."

Taylor also dismissed suggestions that the project's $60m (£36m) budget cut would affect the quality of the finished movie, insisting that he and Neveldine are "pretty creative".

He said: "The reports of the budget of Ghost Rider have been greatly exaggerated. We didn't have a lot of money to make this film... but we're pretty creative. It's gonna look f**kin' huge."

Ghost Rider: Spirit Of Vengeance will feature an all new-cast to the original film, which includes Ciaran Hinds, Violante Placido and Idris Elba. It is due for release in the UK and US on February 17, 2012.

Cage previously claimed that the new Ghost Rider will be more supernatural.

Tom Arnold has revealed that he would like to make a sequel to True Lies with former California governor Arnold Schwarzenegger.

Arnold and Schwarzenegger starred together in the first True Lies film in 1994. Arnold spoke to Movie Web about shooting a potential follow-up, now that Schwarzenegger is returning to making movies.

"I have read a great True Lies 2 script, and I hope we are able to do it. Knock on wood. Arnold Schwarzenegger is excited. I am excited," said Arnold.

He continued: "We have both read the script. There is a script that James Cameron and a guy named Jeff Eastin, who created the TV show White Collar, wrote. It is really great."

Julian Fellowes to make Agatha Christie film

Julian Fellowes is to make a feature-length film based on an Agatha Christie murder mystery.

The Oscar-winning writer, whose most recent hit was the TV drama Downton Abbey, will be adapting the crime author's novel Crooked House.

He told The Independent: "It's one of those things that never go stale; murder in a genteel setting appeals to audiences in Britain and around the world.

"I first read them as I was growing up. We had a holiday cottage in Ireland, and when I was 16 I discovered my first tranche of Agatha Christie novels."

The novel is set in the house of the title, in which the millionaire owner is murdered with his own eye medicine. His death prompts his granddaughter's fiancé to solve the mystery, only after which will he be able to marry her.

Fellowes, who recently took his seat as a Conservative peer in the House of Lords, received his Academy Award for the screenplay of Gosford Park, which starred Helen Mirren and Dame Maggie Smith.

It was revealed earlier today that Fellowes's new drama series based on the Titanic has been greenlit by ITV.
