Scorsese confirms De Niro 'Irishman' reunion

Martin Scorsese has confirmed that he will work with Robert De Niro for a ninth time on crime drama The Irishman.

Speaking at BAFTA's A Life In Pictures Q&A, the Oscar-winning Departed director revealed that the project is currently going through financing, and shooting could begin as early as next year.

De Niro and Scorsese first teamed up for 1973's Mean Streets before further collaborations on Taxi Driver, New York, New York, Raging Bull, The King Of Comedy, Goodfellas and Casino.

The Irishman is based on Charles Brandt's novel I Heard You Paint Houses, which charts the life of union official-turned-mob hitman Frank 'The Irishman' Sheeran.

Scorsese also noted that his Gangs Of New York and Cape Fear screenwriter Steve Zallian is working on the script.

The potential Scorsese/De Niro reunion was first rumoured in September with Al Pacino and Joe Pesci also linked to the project.

Scorsese's next project Hugo Cabret, a 3D children's movie starring Chloe Moretz, Asa Butterfield and Sacha Baron Cohen, is due for release on December 9, 2011.

X-Men: First Class' villain revealed?

A synopsis for Matthew Vaughn's X-Men: First Class has sparked rumours about the movie's antagonist.

Released via Screen Rant, a plot summary for the superhero prequel suggests that Armageddon could serve as its villain.

"Before mutants had revealed themselves to the world, and before Charles Xavier and Erik Lensherr took the names Professor X and Magneto, they were two young men discovering their powers for the first time," reads the synopsis.

"Not arch-enemies, they were instead at first the closest of friends, working together with other Mutants (some familiar, some new), to stop Armageddon. In the process, a grave rift between them opened, which began the eternal war between Magneto's Brotherhood and Professor X's X-Men."

Two characters from the Marvel Universe have operated under the name Armageddon. The first was the artificially-created offspring of Apocalypse, who went on to betray his father and join the X-Men. The other is the ruler of the alien Troyjan empire and a Hulk antagonist.

However, it has also been speculated that Armageddon could be a general reference to a cataclysmic event that the mutant team attempts to ward off.

Starring James McAvoy and Michael Fassbender, X-Men: First Class arrives in theatres on June 3, 2011.

Jon Favreau 'won't direct Iron Man 3'

Jon Favreau has reportedly decided not to direct Iron Man 3.

According to NY Mag, the director - who helmed the previous two installations of the famous franchise - informed Marvel Studios this week that he would not return for the next film.

No reason was given for the decision, but sources told the publication that Favreau was "frustrated" with the studio's desire to include more characters from other comics into the next project.

He also spoke to MTV News last month, admitting that he was unsure what Iron Man 3 would be about.

"In theory, Iron Man 3 is going to be a sequel or continuation of Thor, Hulk, Captain America and Avengers," he said.

"This whole world… I have no idea what it is. I don’t think they do either, from conversations I’ve had with those guys."

Jon Favreau explains 'Iron Man' exit

Jon Favreau has explained why he walked away from the Iron Man franchise.

The filmmaker, who directed both of the Robert Downey Jr. superhero films, this week informed Marvel that he won't be returning to helm a third instalment in the comic book saga. He will instead work on family movie Magic Kingdom for Disney.

Speaking to the Los Angeles Times about his departure, Favreau admitted that he was looking for a new project that "lights a fire" and "isn't loaded with built-in expectations".

"Marvel and I both came of age together,” Favreau said of his experience on Iron Man. “The years that we shared were a pivotal experience. Kevin [Feige, Marvel Studios president] has a firm grasp on the many franchises and how they all interweave and I am happy that I had the opportunity to establish the world that these characters can now play in.

"Iron Man has given me tremendous opportunities and Kevin and I are enjoying a lot of momentum in our careers thanks to the Iron Man films. I look forward to seeing what others can do playing in the same world."

Iron Man 3 is due to open in cinemas on May 13, 2013.

Director: 'We blew it with A-Team remake'

The A-Team director Joe Carnahan has claimed that his big screen revamp of the '80s TV series "blew it" with cinema audiences.

Speaking to the Wall Street Journal, Carnahan suggested that the blockbuster - which made just $77 million at the US box office - wasn't marketed well enough by 20th Century Fox.

"We kind of fell victim to a marketing misstep in that there wasn't necessarily an understanding of what the show was," he said. "We didn't do an adequate enough job of telling people what the movie was, if you know what I mean."

Carnahan claimed that, despite a lack of clarity in the ad campaigns, he received positive feedback from people who went to see Liam Neeson, Bradley Cooper, Quinton Jackson and Sharlto Copley in the action film.

“If I had a nickel for every time someone, especially women, came up to me and said they were dragged to the film but ended up liking it...” he commented. “That’s how you know you blew it. And we blew it. Hopefully, we can make it up and find the audience the film should have found during the summer on Blu-ray and DVD. Fingers crossed.”

When asked about the chances of seeing an A-Team sequel, Carnahan said that "a large degree of it depends on how it does in this [DVD/Blu-ray] realm".

Anna Faris and Bill Hader have denied rumours that they will star in Ghostbusters 3.

The film's co-writer and star Dan Aykroyd apparently later confirmed that they were "strong possibilities" for the cast.

Faris told MakingOf that she hadn't been approached about the movie, saying: "I don't even know what I'd do in it. Gatekeeper? Keymaster?"

Hader, meanwhile, revealed to The Playlist that he also hasn't been contacted about a role: “I went online and was like, 'Woah! Cool!' All my friends were calling, 'Are you gonna be in Ghostbusters 3?' I obviously am very flattered, but I don’t know anything about it."

First '24' movie script 'was rejected'

The executive producer of 24 has revealed that the first script for the movie adaptation was rejected.

Howard Gordon told Assignment X that executives were unhappy with the story penned by State Of Play and Flightplan scribe Billy Ray.

"There was a script, but ultimately it wasn't the right proposition," he said. "It wasn't strong enough or compelling enough to the studio obviously to move ahead with it."

Gordon also admitted that he currently does not know what is happening with the film.

"The movie is something that right now I'm not engaged [with] or involved in," he said. "The rumours are that [director] Tony Scott has an idea that he is going to run by, or has run by, Kiefer Sutherland. I don't know what the status of it is."

Owen Wilson 'nervous in De Niro scenes'

Owen Wilson has admitted to being nervous around Robert De Niro.

Speaking to Access Hollywood, the Little Fockers actor revealed that his lines came out as "gibberish" in scenes that he shared with De Niro because he was so starstruck.

"I have a strong memory of the first time I was in the scene with De Niro. I'm taking [the family] to my house, and showing this like great big house I have and I turn to talk about the house," he recalled.

"I see De Niro's face. It was the whole cast, but I just kind of froze up when I saw De Niro, and Ben [Stiller] started laughing 'cause he could see what was happening."

Wilson added that he had to concentrate on pulling himself together during the experience, explaining: "None of my lines came out - it was just gibberish. I was like - I had to steel myself for the next takes and [tell myself], ‘You’ve gotta get it together or you’ll get fired!’"

George Clooney joins Bullock in 'Gravity'

George Clooney has joined Sandra Bullock in the cast of Alfonso Cuaron's science fiction drama Gravity, reports Deadline.

Clooney will replace Robert Downey Jr. as the leader of a space station that gets decimated by debris from an exploded asteroid. Clooney and Bullock's characters are the sole survivors of the mission and must find a way to return home.

Cuaron's movie has experienced several delays, mainly due to the difficulty in finding an A-list actress to carry the bulk of the picture. Angelina Jolie and Natalie Portman had previously been linked to the movie.

Gravity will begin production next April or May after Bullock has completed Extremely Loud And Incredibly Close and Clooney finds time away from his next directorial effort The Ides Of March

Worthington 'promises improved Titans 2'

Sam Worthington has admitted that Clash Of The Titans was not as good as it could have been.

Speaking to Moviefone, the actor conceded that there was room for improvement in the film's sequel and promised to work hard on his own performance.

"I just think we can improve on it. I think the first one, we kind of let down some people. And yeah, I totally agree," he said.

"The only point of doing a sequel is either the audience demands it or you believe you can better the first one. What we're setting out to do with this one - the writers and the director and myself - is improve. I think I can act f**king better, to be honest... This one I want to kind of try to satisfy a lot more people."

Worthington reiterated his promise, adding: "I've always said you make movies for an audience, that's who you make movies for.

"If the audience is speaking, it's like the old gladiator thing, they give us the thumbs up/thumbs down, you want to stay alive in that coliseum as long as you can."

Clash Of The Titans scooped the 'Turkey' prize for worst film at this year's Digital Spy Movie Awards.

The Facebook group states: "It is unknown which direction Zack Snyder will take the latest Superman film... but one thing is for sure. If there is a Lex Luthor role written in, a relatively unknown Dominic Pace would be perfect."

Jackman, Craig for 'The Dark Tower' lead

Director Ron Howard has hinted that the likes of Daniel Craig and Hugh Jackman are under consideration for the lead role in his film adaptation of Stephen King's The Dark Tower series.

The Apollo 13 director, who is heading up the project with producer Brian Frazer and screenplay writer Akiva Goldsman, admits that it will be a difficult task finding the right actor for the role of gunslinger Roland Deschain.

"Sure, [Craig and Jackman] are some names, and on The Dark Tower fansites they're all about Viggo [Mortensen]," Howard told the Los Angeles Times, when asked about the actors he was considering.

Although the project is yet to be given the official greenlight, Universal Pictures and NBC have announced plans to showcase the series as a multimedia project across both film and television.

"We're moving quickly now, as quickly as we can, and I feel challenged in the most exciting ways," Howard added.

The Dark Tower, a series of seven titles which began in 1982, is often thought of as Stephen King's magnum opus, and has spawned both a spin-off game and comic book series.

The first film in the series is currently targeted for a release in 2013.

Hardy won't be Strange in 'Dark Knight'

Rumours that actor Tom Hardy is to play supervillain Professor Hugo Strange in the next Batman film are reportedly untrue.

According to Batman-on-Film, a source who is working on The Dark Knight Rises confirms that Hardy won't be playing the original Batman villain.

The casting rumour began after it was reported that Nolan was taking inspiration for the film from the comic book storyline 'Prey', in which psychiatrist Professor Strange becomes obsessed with discovering Batman's secret identity.

It has not been revealed who Hardy will portray in the film, but an announcement is expected be made in early 2011.

It had been strongly rumoured that The Riddler would feature as the film's main villain until Nolan himself dismissed the idea earlier this year.

The Dark Knight Rises is due to be released in cinemas on July 20, 2012
