Universal plans to relaunch 'Timecop'

Universal is reportedly planning to revive Jean-Claude Van Damme's 1994 movie Timecop.

According to What's Playing, the studio has been trying to retool the time-travelling blockbuster for the past four years and now wants to begin production to make a release date within "the next 12 to 18 months".

Van Damme has allegedly expressed an interest in coming back to the franchise, although Universal is adamant about casting a new star in the title role.

Timecop starred Van Damme as Max Walker, an agent for the Time Enforcement Commission (TEC). A short-lived spinoff series followed in 1997 and a Jason Scott Lee-led direct-to-video feature, Timecop: The Berlin Decision, was released in 2003.

The actor was expected to appear in both comic book adaptations but has now suggested that he may have to choose between the two roles.

"Because these films have interested directors, it's obviously likely that [Deadpool and R.I.P.D. will] both get made," he told io9. "But I think it would be more likely that only one of them gets made with me."

Reynolds has been approached to take on the title role in Marvel's Deadpool and star as R.I.P.D. protagonist Nick Cruz in Robert Schwentke's Dark Horse Comics adaptation.

McAvoy 'to bury Stewart X-Men performance'

James McAvoy has joked that he plans to "bury" Patrick Stewart's performance as Professor X in X-Men: First Class.

The actor - who portrays the character in the upcoming sequel to the Marvel series - told MTV News that he is looking forward to helping create the origins of such an iconic role.

"I'm basically going to try and bury Patrick's performance," he said.

"I think the fun about these films, when you go back and you either reboot or do a prequel, is you get to see how people became who they are. That means that you have to do them differently and by the end of the movie you have to do them the same way."

He added: "The interesting journey is what happens to them, what changes them, what makes them evolve - not just mutate, but emotionally and psychologically evolve."

X-Men: First Class will be released on June 3, 2011.

Nelson: 'DC won't adopt Marvel strategy'

DC Entertainment president Diane Nelson has said that the firm will not mirror Marvel's Avengers strategy.

Speaking to IGN, the exec explained that the company is focusing on standalone stories, rather than connecting its movie slate.

"People make an assumption that we're going to mirror Marvel's strategy, for example with Avengers," said Nelson. "We do have a very different attitude about how you build a content slate.

"It isn't necessarily about connecting those properties together to build into a single thing. We think we've got great stories and characters that will lend themselves to great standalone experiences, and that's the way we're focusing on it."

Recent Marvel films such as Iron Man 2 and The Incredible Hulk have featured post-credits sequences to bridge the gap between each franchise in preparation for Joss Whedon's Avengers in 2012.

Rumours that DC is planning a Justice League movie featuring the likes of Batman, Superman and Wonder Woman have emerged on several previous occasions.

Speaking during a group Q&A session to promote the DVD and Blu-ray release of Iron Man 2, the exec confirmed that discussions about the project have taken place.

"We've already started discussions with Scarlett [Johansson] about the idea of a solo movie and have begun putting together concepts, but The Avengers comes first," he said.

Reynolds 'wants two superhero franchises'

Ryan Reynolds has said that he is willing to continue appearing in two competing superhero movie franchises.

Reynolds starred in Marvel Comics's 2009 movie X-Men Origins: Wolverine and is currently filming a big screen adaptation of DC Comics's Green Lantern.

He told The AP that while he does not feel proprietary over either franchise at this point, he would enjoy reprising his X-Men Origins: Wolverine character Deadpool for a film in the future.

"I don't want to put the cart before the horse. I don't have two superhero franchises," he said. "If the pieces fit together [for a Deadpool movie] in the right way, then I'm there."

Reynolds continued: "It's certainly something I'm passionate about, because I've known it for so long, and I know the mythology so well. It's a great character. He's a true anti-hero, and that's why I like him."

The actor added that he hopes the upcoming Green Lantern movie will strike a balance between humour and intense action.

"It's a real classic kind of guy. It's the guy who can throw a punch, kiss the girl and tell a joke. That's something I'd love to see on screen again, and I hoped it's embraced for that kind of spirit," he said.

"You can't be intermittently clenching your jaw muscles in place of emotion. You've got to be having a little fun with it too."

Green Lantern will premiere in US cinemas in 2011.

Nolan 'draws up Superman director shortlist'

Christopher Nolan has drawn up a shortlist of five candidates to direct the upcoming Superman movie, according to sources.

The Dark Knight director - who has been appointed to oversee the Man of Steel's next outing - has apparently begun meeting the prospective helmers with fellow producer and wife Emma Thomas.

Deadline reports that the directors under consideration are Watchmen's Zack Snyder, Moon's Duncan Jones, The Taking of Pelham 123's Tony Scott, Cloverfield's Matt Reeves and The Killing Room's Jonathan Liebesman.

Liebesman was recently confirmed to be taking charge of Clash Of The Titans 2, while some of the other directors on the list also have future commitments, making their appointment unlikely.

Last week it was reported that Guillermo Del Toro declined the chance to direct the David Goyer-penned picture.

Nolan is expected to submit his choice to Warner Bros and Legendary Pictures in the next few weeks. Filming is to start as soon as possible in order to meet a 2012 release date, after which time the studio loses the rights to the iconic character.

Ruffalo to play both Banner and Hulk

Joss Whedon's upcoming Avengers film will use performance capture to allow Mark Ruffalo to portray both the character of Bruce Banner and his alter ego, The Incredible Hulk.

Bleeding Cool reports that the film will use a technique similar to that used by James Cameron to create the alien Na'vi race in Avatar.

Both Hulk in 2003 and The Incredible Hulk in 2008 used pure CGI to create the character.

"I'm really excited, no one's ever played the Hulk exactly - they've always done CGI," Ruffalo said. "They're going to do the Avatar stop-action, stop-motion capture."

Ruffalo also hinted that his take on the character will draw more from the original TV series The Incredible Hulk, which starred Bill Bixby, rather than the more recent films.

The Avengers is due to be released in 2012 following the introduction of the final two main characters in Thor and Captain America: The First Avenger next year.
