A-listers vie for Jolie's 'Gravity' role

Angelina Jolie has turned down a second offer to star in Alfonso Cuarón's sci-fi drama Gravity.

According to Deadline, the $80 million Warner Bros project is in danger of collapsing because the studio are unsure about which actress to cast in place of Jolie.

The previously rumoured Scarlett Johansson and Blake Lively have been confirmed as potential replacements for Jolie, while Sandra Bullock, Natalie Portman, Naomi Watts, Marion Cotillard, Carey Mulligan, Sienna Miller, Abbie Cornish, Rebecca Hall and Olivia Wilde have all screen tested or been approached.

Robert Downey Jr. is still attached to the project in a supporting role.

Gravity, which Cuarón co-wrote with his son Jonas, is set on a remote space station and centres on a female astronaut's attempt to get home to her daughter after her crew is wiped out by falling debris.

The lead role is said to be similar to Tom Hanks's in Cast Away, focusing on the same character for the majority of the movie.

Unbreakable 2' to be used in 'Chronicles'

M. Night Shyamalan has revealed that he will use his ideas for Unbreakable 2 in a Night Chronicles movie.

Speaking to MTV, the director confirmed that a villain he wanted to appear in his Unbreakable follow-up will be reworked for the series of horror films he is producing.

"I cannibalised the idea for the sequel to Unbreakable for one of the Night Chronicles," he said. "It was such a cool idea for a villain, and it was actually originally in the script for Unbreakable, and it was too much.

"There were too many villains, so I pulled this villain out and was like, 'I'll make this the second flick'. I fleshed it out more and more, and thought, 'This could be a standalone movie'."

Shyamalan added: "I'll just say it: the third Night Chronicles movie is what would have been the sequel [to Unbreakable]."

Devil, the first movie in the Night Chronicles, will open on September 17

Ridley Scott has teased that the prequels to his 1979 horror movie Alien will be "really nasty".

The 72-year-old director, who recently revealed plot details of the upcoming films, warned Virgin Media that his intention to explore the back story of the extraterrestrial monsters would not make for easy viewing.

"The film will be really tough, really nasty. It's the dark side of the moon. We are talking about gods and engineers. Engineers of space. And were the aliens designed as a form of biological warfare? Or biology that would go in and clean up a planet?"

The Gladiator mastermind added that he was determined to craft a superior product to James Cameron's own intergalactic epic Avatar.

"Jim's raised the bar and I've got to jump to it," Scott stated. "He's not going to get away with it."

Andrew Garfield has described his casting as Spider-Man in the hero's upcoming film reboot as "the stuff that dreams are made of".

Speaking to The Hollywood Reporter at the Telluride Film Festival in Colorado, Garfield joked that he has been preparing for the role since he was a young child.

The actor stated that the superhero touches the lives of so many boys because he seeks to right the world's injustices.

He explained: "Like every young boy who feels stronger on the inside than they look on the outside, any skinny boy basically who wishes their muscles matched their sense of injustice, God, it’s just the stuff that dreams are made of, for sure."

Garfield also noted that being chosen to portray one of Marvel Comics's most iconic characters is one of his life's great honours.

"It’s a true f**king honour to be part of this symbol that I actually think is a very important symbol and it’s meant a great deal to me, and it continues to mean something to people."

Depp, Paradis 'to play literary lovers'

Vanessa Paradis has confirmed that she and long-term partner Johnny Depp are in talks to star together in a film about feminist writer Simone De Beauvoir.

The French singer and actress was rumoured to be in line for the role of De Beauvoir in My American Lover, and has now revealed that Depp is in negotiations to play her lover Nelson Algren.

Paradis told WENN: "They're still writing the script but the idea would be amazing because it's such a beautiful story. You only know when you're really actually shooting."

The couple were previously cast together in Terry Gilliam's Don Quixote, but the ill-fated project was never completed.

"We've had plenty of opportunities to work together," Paradis explained. "But I don't know that I could do it... It's something that we don't look for, otherwise it would've happened many times.

"My American Lover came along and it might happen just because the story is great and why not if we can, but we don't push things. Playing in front of one of the best actors in the world that we have and someone I know so well will be challenging.

"That's why we don't run after it. But I don't know... why not?"

Martin Freeman 'turns down Hobbit role'

Martin Freeman has reportedly turned down a seven-figure offer to play Bilbo Baggins in The Hobbit.

The actor turned down the role in the adaptation of J.R.R. Tolkien's book because he had already committed to 20 weeks filming the second series of BBC's Sherlock, The Sun reports.

They added: "He is looking for a hidden gem now Martin has ruled himself out of the job."

Freeman will return to his role as John Watson in the next three-part series of Sherlock.
