'Mission: Impossible 4' gets Christmas release



Mission: Impossible 4 has been confirmed for release during the 2011 Christmas holiday season.

According to Access Hollywood, Paramount has announced that the next film in the spy thriller series will be in US theatres on December 16, 2011.

Tom Cruise will co-produce the film with J.J. Abrams, who directed Mission Impossible 3.

Also upcoming for the actor is another spy film opposite Cameron Diaz called Knight and Day in July 2010.

The date is the same for the third instalment of Alvin and the Chipmunks 3D.

Cruise confirms Brad Bird for 'M:I-IV'



Tom Cruise has confirmed that Incredibles director Brad Bird has been hired to steer Mission: Impossible IV.

Bird, who also helmed Pixar's Ratatouille, had previously been named as a potential M:I-IV director along with Ruben Fleischer (Zombieland) and Edgar Wright (Hot Fuzz).

"I dig Edgar. Very nice guy, very smart, very talented, I'd really like to do something with him," Cruise told Empire. "I met Edgar on the set of Mission 3. Simon Pegg and those guys are hilarious. I love Shaun Of The Dead. It's amazing. But we're working with Brad right now. I don't know if I'm allowed to talk about it but everything's signed... Brad is doing it."

The actor added of Bird's hiring: "The Iron Giant, The Incredibles, Ratatouille - Brad is enormously talented and [producer J.J. Abrams] and I are having a blast, cranking away. We're having a lot of fun. I like working with people I just love hanging out with. You get to hang out and laugh and talk stories and movies and technology: what are we going to do?"

Paramount earlier announced that Mission: Impossible IV will be released on December 16, 2011.

The Rock eyes 'Fast & Furious' sequel



Dwayne 'The Rock' Johnson is reportedly lining up a role in Fast & Furious sequel Fast Five.

According to Deadline, the actor has been in talks to star alongside Vin Diesel in the Universal action series's latest instalment.

Paul Walker and director Justin Lin are also slated to return for the sequel, which will take fugitives Dom Toretto and Brian O'Connor to Brazil.

Last summer's Fast & Furious revived the franchise with $350 million in worldwide box office takings.

Toby Jones gets 'Captain America' role



Toby Jones will play evil scientist Arnim Zola in the Captain America movie.

The Infamous star is to provide opposition for Chris Evans's titular superhero alongside Hugo Weaving's classic Marvel supervillain the Red Skull, says The Hollywood Reporter.

In the original comics, Zola is a biochemist who created clones for Adolf Hitler and survived World War II by imprinting his own brain pattern into a robot. The character frequently faced off against The Avengers in the Marvel universe.

Sebastian Stan and Hayley Atwell are also confirmed for Captain America, which will shoot in the UK this summer under the direction of Joe Johnston (The Wolfman).

Hathaway, Portman join 'Dragon Tattoo' race



Anne Hathaway, Natalie Portman and Kristen Stewart have allegedly joined the race to secure the lead role in Sony's remake of The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo.

An Education's Carey Mulligan has repeatedly been linked to the part of a bisexual hacker who teams up with a disgraced journalist to solve a decades old disappearance case. However, a series of other A-list actresses are now believed to be courting the part.

According to Deadline, Ellen Page, Mia Wasikowska, Keira Knightley, Olivia Thirlby and Scarlett Johannsen have also expressed an interest in starring in director David Fincher's thriller. Mulligan has reportedly gone as far as taking out the film's writer and producer Steve Zallian for lunch.

An insider has claimed that Fincher "is not sure if he wants to go with an actress of any note or go with an unknown". The source added: "David's process is very specific and private. He's looking for authenticity and a degree of fierceness and believability capable of delivering the intensity that the part on the page calls for."

Sony has allegedly offered the lead male role to Fincher's Se7en star Brad Pitt and is awaiting an answer.

Mickey Rourke praises Megan Fox



Mickey Rourke has again praised co-star Megan Fox.

The 57-year-old, who worked with Fox on upcoming feature Passion Play, said that the actress was "great to work with - and to look at," according to Splash News.

"It was nice working with someone who has a reputation for being beautiful, but who really did her homework. She was challenging to work with. People are going to have a different perception of her," Rourke said of the Transformers star.

Rourke previously called Fox the "best young actress" he has ever worked with.

He can currently be seen as villain Whiplash in Iron Man 2.

Chris Pine signs to star in 'War'



Chris Pine has signed to co-star in upcoming romantic comedy This Means War.

The Star Trek actor joins Reese Witherspoon in the project, directed by Terminator Salvation helmer McG, reports Entertainment Weekly.

The movie centres on two best friends who cross swords after they fall in love with the same woman. The feud apparently gets out of hand and ends up demolishing half of New York City.

The second male lead has yet to be cast. It is said that producers are eyeing Seth Rogen for the role.

Production is to begin in July.

Terrence Howard to play Nelson Mandela



Terrence Howard has signed to portray Nelson Mandela in the upcoming feature Winnie.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, the film is a biopic about Mandela's former wife Winnie.

Jennifer Hudson was previously cast in the title role.

Darrell Roodt is directing the picture, scheduled to begin production on May 31 in Cape Town, Johannesburg and Robin Island.

Howard will next be seen in Tuskegee Airmen drama Red Tails.

Bruckheimer: 'Bad Boys 3 in development'



Jerry Bruckheimer has confirmed that Bad Boys 3 is in development.

Speaking to Coming Soon, the producer revealed that a screenplay is being written for a third film in the action-comedy series, which stars Will Smith and Martin Lawrence.

"It's a wish and a hope and a dream. We've been working on a screenplay, which is excellent. It's an idea Will gave us, so hopefully, it will come to fruition, we would love it to," Bruckheimer commented.

Lawrence recently said that he had discussed making Bad Boys 3 with Smith and director Michael Bay.

The original film was released in 1995, with the sequel following in 2003.

Monaghan, Shannon for 'Machine Gun Preacher'



Michelle Monaghan and Michael Shannon have signed to co-star in upcoming action film Machine Gun Preacher .

The actors join Gerard Butler in the movie, directed by Quantum of Solace helmer Marc Forster, reports Deadline New York.

The story, based on actual events, centres on Sam Childres, a man who ventured into Africa to rescue children from rebel warlords.

Monaghan will portray Childers's wife Lynn, while Shannon will play his close friend.

Monaghan co-starred with Shia LaBeouf in the 2008 thriller Eagle Eye. Shannon recently played Kim Fowley in The Runaways.

De Niro, Strahovski join 'Killer Elite'



Robert De Niro and Yvonne Strahovski have both signed to co-star in forthcoming action thriller The Killer Elite.

According to Moviehole, the actors have joined stars Clive Owen, Jason Statham and Dominic Purcell in the film, directed by Gary McKendry.

The movie is based on a novel by Ranulph Fiennes titled The Feather Men, which centres on a group of British special forces fighters who are hunted by assassins.Aden Young, Ben Mendelsohn, Lachy Hulme and Firass Dirani have also boarded the picture.

De Niro will next be seen in Machete, opening September 3 in US cinemas. Strahovski stars in NBC's Chuck.

Hayden Christensen boards 'Genesis Code'



Hayden Christensen has signed to star in forthcoming thriller The Genesis Code, Myriad Pictures has announced.

The Star Wars actor will play a former national security expert who discovers a strange experiment being conducted by a religious sect called The Shadow of the Cross while investigating his sister's murder.

"We are very pleased to have Hayden on board for this project," said Myriad's CEO and president Kirk D'Amico.

He added: "His passion for the character of Joe Lassiter and the world he inhabits - of religion, politics and secret operatives - was apparent to all of us involved in the project. It is this kind of commitment that we know will lead to a compelling performance."

The film will be shopped to distributors at the Cannes Film Festival.

'Luke Cage' film moving forward?



Rumours that Marvel Studios is moving forward with its proposed Luke Cage movie have emerged.

According to the Los Angeles Times, an unnamed actor has entered preliminary negotiations to portray the superhero.

"There's more talk under way about putting the urban hero into his own film and that a notable Hollywood star is now having [very] preliminary talks with Marvel Studios about the property and its potential," the report read.

R&B singer Tyrese Gibson has previously been linked with the lead role and John Singleton with the director's chair. It is unknown whether Gibson is the "notable Hollywood star" in question.

Marvel previously outlined plans to bring its second and third-tier heroes to the big screen in low-budget outings. Luke Cage was one of the names dropped when the announcement was made.

Jane Goldman to pen 'X-Men: First Class'



Jane Goldman is reteaming with Kick-Ass director Matthew Vaughn to write X-Men: First Class.

The screenwriter's husband, chatshow host Jonathan Ross, revealed the news on his Twitter page.

"The wife is away writing X-Men 4 so I am off to bed with [my dog] little Sweeney alone. He will keep my feet warm and my spirits high," he wrote.

After tweets from followers inquiring about the superhero movie, Ross later replied: "I am afraid I better not answer any more queries re X-Men First Class for fear of spoilers and also possible divorce."

Goldman also co-wrote the script for Stardust with Vaughn.

X-Men: First Class will open in cinemas on June 3, 2011.

'Judge Dredd' revamp nets director



Vantage Point director Pete Travis has been hired to make the new 3D Judge Dredd movie.

According to Deadline, the DNA Films project has secured funding with Reliance Big Entertainment and IM Global to produce the picture on a budget of around $50 million. A distributor will be sought for the 2000AD comic book adaptation at the Cannes Film Festival.

Producer Andrew Macdonald and screenwriter Alex Garland, who both worked on Sunshine and 28 Days Later, are part of the film's creative team along with Travis.

Created by John Wagner, Carlos Ezquerra and Pat Mills, Judge Dredd first appeared in the 2000AD science fiction anthology in 1977. The law enforcer has since featured in novels, video games and a 1995 movie starring Sylvester Stallone in the title role.

Colin Farrell is 'Fright Night' vampire



Colin Farrell will play a vampire in the remake of '80s cult movie Fright Night, reports Deadline.

The In Bruges star is to take on the role played by Chris Sarandon in the original, that of a charismatic vampire who moves in next door to horror buff Charley Brewster.

Anton Yelchin (Star Trek) is already on board to portray the teen lead, while Toni Collette will play his mother.

Farrell, who recently appeared in indie films Crazy Heart and Ondine, has also agreed to star in Seth Gordon comedy Horrible Bosses.

The Irsh actor chose Fright Night and Bosses over roles in Katherine Heigl's One For The Money and Reese Witherspoon's This Means War.

Tatum, Latifah board comedy 'Cheaters'



Channing Tatum and Queen Latifah have signed to co-star in upcoming Ron Howard comedy Cheaters.

The actors join Vince Vaughn, Kevin James Jennifer Connelly and Winona Ryder in the project, says The Hollywood Reporter.

Vaughn co-wrote the movie's script with Alan Loeb. The plot finds Vaughn's character learning that his best friend's wife (Ryder) is cheating on him. He has to decide whether or not to tell his friend (James) about her infidelity.

Tatum will play Ryder's tattooed lover. Vaughn is also producing the movie with Bryan Grazer.

Production begins in June for a January 12, 2011 release date.

RZA, Eli Roth team up for 'Iron Fist'



Wu-Tang Clan co-founder RZA will star in and direct a new action-adventure film set in feudal China, reports Deadline New York.

Universal is to distribute the rapper's directorial debut, titled The Man with the Iron Fist.

RZA also co-wrote the movie's script with Hostel director Eli Roth.

Roth will further produce the film, which casts RZA as a blacksmith who creates weapons for the residents of a Chinese village who are required to fight against dangerous forces.

"RZA has imagined every tribe, every fighting style, every costume. He knows kung fu like I know horror," Roth said.

Production is scheduled to begin in September.

Bateman, Aniston circle comedy 'Bosses'



Jason Bateman and Jennifer Aniston are in talks to star in comedy Horrible Bosses.

It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia actor Charlie Day is also in discussions to co-star, says The Hollywood Reporter.

Bosses centres on three friends who decide that killing one another's bosses is the only way to work out their frustrations at work.

Bateman and Day are circling the roles of frustrated employees while Aniston is eyeing the role of one of the bosses.

A production start date has not been announced for the New Line project.

Brad Pitt to star in drama 'Tigers'



Brad Pitt has signed to star in and co-produce upcoming drama Tigers, according to The Hollywood Reporter.

Pitt is teaming with Babel screenwriter Guillermo Arriaga and The Fountain director Darren Aronofsky for the project.

Pitt and Aronofsky are co-producing, and Arriaga is writing the script.

The film centres on an animal activist who must protect a small Siberian town from a tiger who attacks the residents.

A director has not yet been attached to the movie.
