A consultant pathologist in the Dublin city morgue in the 1950s, Quirke is a powerful character more at ease among the cold silent slabs than the company of his fellow men. But in truth, his profession provides his greatest pleasure: inquisitive by nature, he is fascinated with unlocking the secret to these cadavers' deaths.
After a body vanishes from his mortuary one night Quirke's curiosity is piqued by the lengths his brother is prepared to go to, to cover up the cause of one young woman's death in childbirth.

Quirke being told to stay away from the Christine Falls case by Malachy was a bad idea as Malachy was seen signing the death certificate without the body being examined before her body disappeared over night and Dolly Moran being tortured before being murdered was tragic but looks like her killer were looking for Christine's missing baby, the adopted baby having the same name was a bit of a coincidence but the adopted father killing the baby was sickening and Phoebe being Quirke daughter was a little predictable but her felling for him was incredible but him dismissing her advances made sense

I had a feeling Phoebe would move out of the family home after finding out that Quirke is her father but hooking up with Leslie was a deadly mistake as he was drugging rich ladies and taking naked photos of them and Sarah dying was a surprise as you thought she was in bed with Quirke

It's a good job Phoebe asked for Quirke's help to find her friend April as her family wasn't interested and finding blood under her bed did make it look like she may have had a miscarriage or something worse until they discover she had an abortion which had complications that her family covered up because she was carrying her brother child
