Episode 1: Pilot (Sep/25/2001)
Pilot episode of the drama. High-powered thirtysomething lawyer Nick Fallin is arrested on drug charges and sentenced to community service. Finding himself in the low-profit world of Children's Legal Services, he tries to atone for past indiscretions by helping others.
Episode 2: Reunion (Oct/02/2001)
Nick brings a $10million lawsuit against a pharmaceutical company on behalf of Hunter Reed and his mother's estate, but is soon told to drop it in the interests of the firm. James gets handed a case involving a 12-year-old boy who has been living with his brother since their mother was arrested for selling drugs
Episode 3: Paternity (Oct/09/2001)
When the mother of a disabled boy receives two years in prison for prostitution, her son is told he cannot stay with his stepfather due to the man's previous assault charge, and instead faces the prospect of being placed in a state-run facility. Nick sets out to keep the family together by tracking down the boy's biological father and demanding financial support, but the move backfires. Meanwhile, the Fallins are drawn into a proxy battle that could destroy a family they have long represented.
Episode 4: Lolita? (Oct/16/2001)
After being arrested for possession of narcotics, Nick is assigned to do community work and takes on the case of a 15-year-old girl who claims she was raped by her stepfather. She is placed with her maternal aunt, but on further investigation, Nick discovers they have made a dangerous mistake. Meanwhile, Burton refuses John Clayton's wishes to reorganise his assets at the steel plant.
Episode 5: The Men from the Boys (Oct/23/2001)
Nick Fallin, a high-powered attorney who is brought down to earth with a bump when he is busted for drugs, and must undergo 1,500 hours of community service. Joining forces with social worker Laurie Salt, he decides to represent underprivileged children in court : a task that reignites his conscience.
Episode 6: Indian Summer (Oct/30/2001)
A teenage runaway who lied about her age to sleep with Nick later blackmails him into helping secure a place in the same foster family as her younger sister. Meanwhile, Alvin is forced to take extreme action when the legal services clinic loses its funding.
Episode 7: Feeding Frenzy (Nov/06/2001)
Nick tries to help a 25-year-old man with learning difficulties who has been wrongly accused of murder - but his search for the real killer plunges him back into the drugs subculture. Meanwhile, Jake accidentally hits another lawyer with his car and finds himself facing a possible jail sentence on felony charges - but Burton Fallin is more concerned that his reckless driving has put the firm in danger of being sued
Episode 8: Heart (Nov/20/2001)
Nick becomes emotionally attached to a terminally ill 12-year-old girl who needs a heart transplant; Burton represents a company that is trying to overthrow its very ill CEO.
Episode 9: The Funnies (Nov/27/2001)
Nick agrees to defend Barbara's teenage son, who is due in court for possessing a home-made drug - but when the boy's friend dies of an overdose, the charge is upgraded to murder.
Episode 10: Loyalites (Dec/11/2001)
Nick represents an Arab-American who is being sued for defending his restaurant against a vandal's attack, and Burton faces a flurry of possible defections from the firm, including that of his own son.
Episode 11: Home (Dec/18/2001)
Nick takes a job with a new law firm and finds himself fighting against his father in the Hunter Reed case. Meanwhile, Alvin agrees to defend his ex-wife in a wrongful termination suit
Episode 12: Causality (Jan/08/2002)
A new client forces Alvin to face ghosts from the past and Nick struggles to cope with his new life as events take a downward turn, making him regret his decision to move to a different law firm.
Episode 13: Privilege (Jan/22/2002)
Nick faces a quandary when a long-term client is suspected of sexually abusing his daughter, and is forced to decide whether to confront him and put at risk not only the contract, but also their friendship.
Episode 14: Family (Feb/05/2002)
Nick is surprised when his Aunt Liz visits - but is unprepared for her striking resemblance to his mother.
Episode 15: In Loco Parentis (Feb/26/2002)
Nick and Lulu find themselves involved in a hostage situation when a mother with a history of drug problems refuses to allow her child to be taken into care.
Episode 16: Solidarity (Mar/05/2002)
James represents his nephew, who stands accused of shooting his mother's abusive boyfriend, while Nick's personal plans are put on hold when unexpected arrivals turn up.
Episode 17: The Divide (Mar/12/2002)
Nick and Lulu take opposing views of a case involving the adoption of two brothers, while Jake tries to help his parents keep their house.
Episode 18: Mothers of the Disappeared (Mar/26/2002)
A woman asks Nick to have her missing daughter declared dead - but the girl suddenly turns up alive.
Episode 19: Lawyers, Guns and Money (Apr/09/2002)
A parole officer threatens to reveal details of Nick's bad behaviour unless he agrees to help him. Lulu's husband is arrested, and Burton continues to work toward a place on the federal branch.
Episode 20: Shelter (May/07/2002)
Nick runs the risk of ruining an important deal with which he has been entrusted, and reluctantly joins Lulu to represent the interests of a homeless couple who wish to keep their newborn child.
Episode 21: Chinese Wall (May/14/2002)
Nick is stunned to learn Burton plans to bring a powerful former state senator and his aide into the firm.
Episode 22: The Beginning (May/21/2002)
Burton's appointment to the federal bench leaves Nick re-evaluating his future and considering a new career.
