In 1776 and 1777, a Setauket, New York farmer and his childhood friends form an unlikely group of spies, called the Culper Ring, who eventually help turn the tide during the American Revolutionary War.[1] The series begins in October 1776, shortly after British victories recaptured Long Island, Staten Island, and New York City for the Crown and left General George Washington's army in desperate straits.

According to the first episode's introductory card titles: "Autumn 1776. Insurgents have declared war against the Crown. Following a successful naval landing, His Majesty's Army has forced Washington's rebels into the wilderness. New York City serves as military base of operations for the British. The Loyalists of nearby Long Island keep vigilant watch out for sympathizers, and spies."

Farmer Abe Woodhull tries to stay neutral between the British and the colonial militia while his childhood friends pressure him to join the revolt against the British by supplying intelligence information about British troop strengths and movements.

Episode 1x02: Who By Fire (Apr/13/2014)
Major Hewlett is determined to find the culprit in Major Joyce's murder. When the finger starts to point at Anna, Abe decides he must act. Captain Simcoe is interrogated ruthlessly by Ben and Caleb while Major Rogers travels to Setauket to investigate the ambush of the 20 British regulars.

Abe and his father travel to New York so that Abe can learn his father's business; Ben's squad runs into internal strife while escorting Simcoe; Mary learns more about Anna's place in Abe's life.

Episode 1x04: Eternity How Long (Apr/27/2014)
Major Hewlett claims the right to use headstones as defensive measures around his cannon and Abe and Richard struggle to keep the peace with the townspeople. General Scott is dubious about the intelligence of the Hessian mercenaries so Ben and Caleb try to figure out a way to pass the information up the chain to General Washington. Major Andre has plans of his own to depose General Washington, with Philomena's assistance.
