Author: bala    Time: 8-31-2008 04:41     Subject: Merlin Season 1-5 General Discussion Thread (Spoilers)

Robin Hood failed to reach the dizzy heights achieved by Doctor Who in the Saturday evening slot, but that hasn't stopped the BBC from rehashing another legendary tale. Hopes are certainly high for the 13-part Merlin, which revolves around the magical adventures and friendship between the eponymous young wizard (Colin Morgan) and the arrogant Prince Arthur (Bradley James). An impressive supporting cast includes Anthony Head, John Hurt, Richard Wilson and Michelle Ryan, plus the CGI comes from the same team responsible for Doctor Who - The Mill. Can Merlin possibly accomplish that rare feat of blending lavish spectacle along with an involving storyline? The answer is imminent, but the omens are good as mainstream US broadcaster NBC has bought the series to air in a peak timeslot - a move almost unheard of for British shows.http://link.brightcove.com/servi ... 074/bctid1760440507

October or November would be lucky...Merlin is set to premiere midseason 2009. However, if something underperforms at NBC this fall, it could get an early shot. This would be something I'd have to watch the pilot for...I'm on the edge...there's another period series on the same night on NBC...something about kings...I think.
Author: shinny    Time: 9-3-2008 03:57     Subject: Reply 7#7 redsoxpatriot30's post

That's on NBC though Red who have bought the rights to air it in the US from BBC. But it will air on BBC first, probably Oct/Nov as Bala said.

The BBC's new Saturday night drama Merlin got off to an impressive start last night, despite going up against The X Factor in the ratings.

The new retelling of Arthurian legend focuses on the wizard's uncharted younger days and stars Richard Wilson, Anthony Head and John Hurt. The 13-episode first series has also been bought by NBC in the US, where it will air from next January.

The first episode had an average of 6.65m (30%) over 45 minutes from 7.30pm, while on ITV1, ratings juggernaut The X Factor brought in 9.26m (41.7%) over an hour. The audience for Merlin was steady throughout but grew towards the end with a peak of 6.82m (30.3%) at 8.10pm.

Will Mellor (he of the interminable Two Pints) guest stars as Knight Valiant, who comes to Camelot to compete in the yearly sword-fighting tournament traditionally won by Arthur. But Valiant is hiding a secret weapon - a magical shield equipped with spitting snakes.

In truth, this episode follows pretty much the same formula as the first: a dastardly visitor ingratiates themselves with the King, only for Merlin to discover their true motives and be forced into exposing them.

It's episode three where things really start to heat up, though, as Michelle Ryan (she of the most definitely terminable Bionic Woman) makes her first guest appearance as the wicked sorceress Nimueh. She's the "big bad" of this season, if you will, and plays a large part in driving the overall mythology of the show.

Merlin airs Saturday at 6pm on BBC One.

I finally got round to watching this and I quite liked it. It certainly has potential and I'm interested to see where they go with it. I didn't think it was amazing though. I wouldn't lose any sleep not knowing what happened if I missed an episode, whereas with some shows I panic if I miss one and try desperately to find somewhere to watch it. (Which is how I ended up here in the first place funnily enough!)
Maybe that will change as Merlin progresses but if not, it's still well worth a watch.

I disagree - ep5 is the one that got me all the way on board with the show.  i found the "new twist" to be interesting but was not excited about it until ep5.  Having read "the mists of avalon" by marion zimmer bradley, I was disappointed at the lack of depth to the female characters; I'm also VERY confused that morgana isn't a magic user.  granted I'm not well-versed in arthurian lore, but I've never heard of her not being associated with magic.

the reason I like this show is the exploration of interpersonal relationships, esp. those between merlin and arthur, and gwen and everybody.  that's prolly why ep5 sealed my interest - that aspect finally started to get complex.  one thing that makes this show engaging is we know abstractly how things turn out, so one of the show's drawing points for me is seeing how it'll get there.  how does the whole banishment-of-magic thing affect merlin's future?  how does the show get from gwen+merlin (kinda sorta maybe) to arthur+gwen+lancelot, esp since she's a handmaiden, not a noble?  when's uther gonna die, and how?  and what *is* morgana's backstory?  how much of the arthurian legend will the show try to cover - will they get to galahad?  how are they gonna fit so much story into just 8 more episodes, as I'm under the impression there will only be 13 eps total (am I wrong)?
Author: gabsimom    Time: 10-21-2008 10:05     Subject: Reply 68#68 Mercuriel1's post

I think this mini series is a test to see if it viable as a regular series. We most likely won't see Uther die. This is a story about before they became legends. As far as Morgana she is suppose to marry Arthur and perhaps later when she dables with magic it will change her into the Morgana we know and she will play the woman scorned role. What happen to the witch in the 1st episode spell  book. I always thought Morgana took it?

Episode 8 was cool i love that this show is full of difficult intresting and controversional decisions but i was routing for the bad guy when him and the king were fighting. Its awesome that were finding out more about Uthers mysterious past however i think he is totally out of line cause She said she didnt know what was gonna happen and that they were friends. Why has she suddenly popped up now though? She was right about Uther  though I cant believe he said that he wished that Arthur was never born, that was cold.

it was great episode she gave him an heir and his wife died. the balance between life and death but I'm annoyed at merlin the dragon warn him that Arthur was the only use the sword but uthur did there were no consequence?, there should been some consequence of that action and merlin throw the sword into lake was just too easy
Author: dognxtdoor    Time: 11-21-2008 23:58     Subject: Reply 78#78 bala's post

What exactly was Merlin to do when Uther wanted to use the sword that he said was fit for a king? He is a mere servant, he had no idea that the king would be the one walking into the armory, or I am sure he would have hid the sword out of sight.

As far as a punishment, the dragon was mostly disappointed that Uther was not killed, and Arthur was ruling with the user of the sword. The fact that it is in the lake, only keeps it safe until the day comes that Arthur needs to wield Excalibur.
Author: bala    Time: 11-22-2008 00:06     Subject: Reply 79#79 dognxtdoor's post

i really don't know but merlin if you watch throughout the season is a good liar and he lied to Uther many times to protect Arthur so i don't see why he couldn't lie to him and say there something wrong with the sword.

Season 1: Episode 1: The Dragon’s Call

This was a brilliant episode, Merlin and Arthur are quite good together, the second fight was great to watch and funny at times, Mary/Helen was just a crazy old woman, the best part was when Merlin found out what his reward would be. Yes, the show plays fast and loose with what is deemed to be historical truth. However, just like Robin Hood, it's not worth getting worked up about the inaccuracies

Season 1: Episode 2: Valiant

A Brilliant episode, a snake shield was a great idea for this episode; Merlin bringing that dog statue back to life was fantastic and was nice to see Arthur ask Merlin to come back as his servant after sacking him. A credible performance by Will Mellor as Knight Valiant was the highlight of the episode for me. I like how everyone keeps going on about Merlin’s destiny.

Season 1: Episode 3: The Mark Of Nimueh

This was another great episode, Merlin almost getting Gwen killed was good but saving her made up for his mistake, Morgana convincing Arthur to help was great and yet again Merlin uses his magic to save the day but Arthur takes all the credit. In my eyes Michelle Ryan did an excellent job of playing Nimueh
Author: spratt89    Time: 9-10-2009 11:29

Season 1: Episode 4: The Poisoned Chalice

This was a great episode, was nice to see Arthur doing anything he could to save Merlin, it looks like Gwen cares for Merlin, Arthur disobeying Uther again was great as Morgana is the one that talks Arthur into going against Uther’s wishes. What was highly improved in this episode was the relationship between Arthur and Merlin; both now seem to have a mutual respect for one another with each out to save one another
Author: spratt89    Time: 9-10-2009 11:30

Season 1: Episode 5: Lancelot

Another brilliant episode, I hope Lancelot makes another appearance at some point as he was great for this episode and also glad that somebody apart from Gaius knows about Merlin’s secret, was nice how Merlin wanted to help Lancelot become a Knight even if it did get Lancelot in trouble. The Griffin special effects themselves were pretty good, the ending with Merlin saving the day and yet again not able to take the credit for doing so.

Season 1: Episode 6: A Remedy To Cure All Ills

A fantastic episode, Edwin was one nasty piece of work but Edwin got what he deserved in the end, was a nice gesture on Uther’s part to make Gaius a freeman of Camelot. I think Merlin might always have been suspicious of Edwin. How Uther could fall for what Edwin was saying about Gaius I will never know.
Author: spratt89    Time: 9-10-2009 11:30

Season 1: Episode 7: The Gates Of Avalon

A very good episode, was good to see it revolve around Morgana and her dreams, Arthur was very different when he thought he was in love, the cover story Merlin and Gaius gave Arthur was a brilliant one. I loved the reaction Uther gave when Arthur declared he was going to get married, Merlin always seems to save the day at the right moment.
Author: spratt89    Time: 9-10-2009 11:30

Season 1: Episode 8: The Beginning Of The End

A Fantastic episode to watch, Morgana really was attached to the boy for some reason, Merlin looks for invites trouble if you ask me or trouble just finds Merlin either way it ends in the same result, How Morgana continues to convince Arthur to help I will never know, best part was Merlin getting the keys from Arthur as that was just funny to watch.
