Subject: Slow Buffering Issue Update - 7th Aug 2013 [Print This Page]

Author: shinny    Time: 8-7-2013 09:50     Subject: Slow Buffering Issue Update - 7th Aug 2013

Hi all, We have been advised by admin that they are doing a mass data transfer from the current servers to the new servers. This is what is causing the issues with the US and EU servers. The admin team hope to have the new servers up and running this month which will alleviate the buffering issues we have seen (especially during peak hours). Going forward the tech team will try to do these transfers, to the new server, outside of peak hours to avoid causing further streaming issues. Thanks for your patience. When we have the new servers up and running, it will be well worth it! Shinny

Is anyone else experiencing very slow buffering on the mobile site? It seems like the desktop versions are functioning normally, however I am unable to watch any shows via the mobile site as the playback is incredibly slow. It has been this way for at least a week.

Any shows in particular? I just tested a show on my iPod Touch and it loaded and played right away - no issues of slow buffering.
Author: heidepro    Time: 2-14-2014 14:28

It seems like any show. I stopped trying on my iPad for a few days because the shows wouldn't load, and tried again just now with the same issue. It loads fine from the regular site on my laptop (although I haven't been using the USA server link). Is there a way to change the server on the mobile device? Thanks!

Hiya, no because the files are HTML-5 coded so they are not "sitting" on a server as such. When you load the show, do you pause it and let it load up for about 10 mins or so?
Author: heidepro    Time: 2-14-2014 16:49

Yes. It loads at a creeping rate. It would take hours. My internet speed is very fast and it used to function just like my laptop.

Are you having issues with anything else loading slower on your iPad? I haven't noticed any slowing down, and I've tested it a few times on my iPod Touch since you first posted about it. My internet is fast, but not the fastest available, and it still loads pretty much as fast as it does when I watch on the regular site.

Also, what browser are you using? Are you using Safari? If so, try downloading the Google Chrome app and try that way.
Author: heidepro    Time: 2-15-2014 20:01

Thanks for the replies! everything else loads quickly (YouTube, Netflix, etc.). I downloaded the Google Crome app to try, but same issue. Seems like same issue on iPhone as well. Any other thoughts?
Author: shinny    Time: 2-16-2014 04:58

Might be an obvious question, but just checking that you are on WIFI and not trying to stream on 3G/4G? I just tried on my iPhone and it's working fine for me.
Author: heidepro    Time: 2-16-2014 13:25

Yes, definitely WIFI I wish that we're the issue. I just downloaded the Puffin app (with flash support) and was able to play shows without any problem - loading at normal fast speed. The mobile version is just not working for me, which is unfortunate as it has worked well up until a week ago or so. I guess I'm the only one, though, which is strange.
Author: shinny    Time: 2-16-2014 14:22     Subject: Reply 12#12 heidepro's post

Glad it worked through the Puffin web browser. You have to pay for the flash support, right? It's strange why it stopped working for you though. I just tested it again there and it was fine. Have you turned your iPad on and off lately? Closed out apps etc? Just trying to see if there could be any other reasons.
Author: heidepro    Time: 2-17-2014 20:57

I paid a few bucks for the app, but then unlimited flash. The biggest problem/disappointment is that I can't mirror with Apple TV using Puffin - so I still would like to solve the crazy slow download mystery. I did try turning it off, and closed all the apps. Still no improvement. I thought maybe it had to do with an iOS update, but then I probably wouldn't be alone with this issue. I figure I'll just keep trying every now and then and see if it fixes itself. Thanks for your help trying to troubleshoot this, I really appreciate it.

I have been having an issue for about a week where all servers are timing out and I have to repeatedly try loading the shows.. eventually one of them will kick on, but it is driving me crazy. This is on my laptop, not a wireless device. Any thoughts? usually if I am having trouble with one server, the other works fine... not now though
Author: waterlilybarb    Time: 3-2-2014 13:01     Subject: Reply 15#15 candudette's post

I've not had any time out issues, but I did notice shows were loading very slow yesterday. I thought it was just me. No idea as to the cause. It happens more often at peak times, but I was watching at an odd time, so that wasn't the issue. You mentioned you were on your laptop. Were you plugged directly into your modem, or using wifi (I know you said not a wireless device, but I have to ask)? No one else has mentioned the problem, so I'm wondering if it's a location thing? It's weird, but sometimes some areas have issues and others don't, and it tends to be quite random. If Admin mentions anything, we'll be sure to post about it.

I am plugged in, not using the wifi. everything else seems to be fine. my computer recently updated, but I con't know how that would affect this.. I get the STREAM-NOT-FOUND message when it times out. I doubt that helps, but who knows..If there is a codec update page or anything, can you let me know?

Sometimes rebooting your rooter can help

Which operating system does your computer use, and which version (Mac, Windows 8, etc)? Updates can make a difference. Have you tried any of the suggestions in our Flash Player Trouble Shooting / Helpful Tips Thread?
Author: candudette    Time: 3-10-2014 12:47

I updated the flash player.. there were some windows updates (Windows 7 operating system), but I am not sure how to tell if any were the culprit. (I updated flash after the installs..) Still is happening, so I am not sure what to do. Sometimes the show ill pop right on, but then I fight for the next 3. I am usually pretty good at trouble-shooting, but having all of the player options affected baffles me.

I've done all the recent Windows 7 updates and not had any issues with them. I'm sorry I can't think of what else to suggest. Hopefully, another member, or another moderator will have something useful to suggest.

For 4 days now, shows have been loading VERY VERY slowly most hours of the day both on my laptop and iPad. Problem hours seem to get longer with each passing day. All other streaming of videos (Netflix / PBS) is fine. Have closed applications, restarted devices, restarted wireless router, to no avail. Any problems on your end or reports from other users? Have been a satisfied customer for 7 years now, hope you have an answer.

18:40 forum time I started a 42 minute episode and it has just finished loading the red bar to the end, so no problems in the UK and I have only 6.5 MB speed plus at the same time I have been streaming live Sky TV on my tablet

Have you tried both servers ( US and EU) - i notice some day one server is slower than the other .
Author: codebreaker    Time: 4-6-2014 11:03     Subject: Reply 24#24 bala's post

The only time I use the US server is when steaming is not found on the other
Author: waterlilybarb    Time: 4-6-2014 11:21     Subject: Reply 22#22 tniat's post

I've been watching shows the past few days too, and nothing has loaded slowly. I suggest trying the other server, if you haven't already. I generally find the EU server works best for me - I'm in Canada - but if it's slow, I switch to the US server. I don't bother with the HD server because I DO find it to be slow for me. On your iPad, you would be accessing the mobile site, which has it's own server, and I've not had issues with it either - I've tested it this week on my iPod Touch. I can only suggest checking some suggestions in the Flash Player Trouble Shooting / Helpful Tips Thread, though I don't think there is anything there applicable to the mobile site.
Author: shinny    Time: 4-6-2014 11:49

I've not had any real issues either. Viptv (EU, US and HD) are all loading fast for me. However, I have noticed that if I'm watching something on the mobile site and I pause it, for whatever reason, when I start to play it again it stops streaming and I have to refresh and start from that point again. I'm not sure why it's happening, as it's never happened before.
Author: petukhovat    Time: 7-11-2014 18:16     Subject: Buffering VERY slowly

It's pretty much impossible to watch anything on the mobile site during the day. It took almost two hours to get through one 45min episode because it keeps stopping every few seconds and buffer. It seems that the server is overloaded because the issue is much less noticeable very early in the morning. My internet speediest is consistently 12-13mbs, yet it takes twice as long to buffer when trying to any show between the hours of 6-9pm pacific time. Can you check on what's wrong with the servers? I don't have this buffering issue streaming from netflix or amazon during the same hours
Author: waterlilybarb    Time: 7-11-2014 19:54     Subject: Reply 28#28 petukhovat's post

The mobile site has it's own server. If it were a widespread issue, we would have a lot of people posting about it in the forum. Yours is the first complaint we've had in a few months about speed, so I doubt it's a site issue. What device are you streaming on that you are using the mobile site? If you are watching from your TV or computer, you can use the regular site, which might be better. I use the site at similar times - 9-12pm Eastern Time, and rarely have an issue with buffering.
Author: petukhovat    Time: 7-11-2014 20:32     Subject: Reply 29#29 waterlilybarb's post

the regular site is better, but I want to use my iPad so i can stream it through apple tv to the tv screen. The problem is with the mobile site; not using the mobile site is not a solution. It's not my iPad or the internet speed, and just because I'm the first one to post a complaint doesn't mean it's not happening. My question is whether or not it's possible to check how busy the servers are to see if it's being overloaded and remedy the situation...
Author: waterlilybarb    Time: 7-11-2014 20:55     Subject: Reply 30#30 petukhovat's post

It is not possible for me or any other moderator to check how busy the servers are, as we don't have access to any of the technical side. We can ask Admin about it, but I can't guarantee a speedy reply.
Author: shinny    Time: 7-12-2014 10:55     Subject: Reply 30#30 petukhovat's post

There is a solution to getting your iPad to play flash content, which means you can use the regular site. You'll need to download an app that has Flash ability, something like Puffin or Photon (Photon seems the most popular for iPad) - They are not free, however. They cost about €3-€4 on the iPhone, not sure how much on the iPad. I use Puffin on my iPhone and it works well for me.
