Can occur with a range of medical and dental conditions
Woman are at greater risk of suffering from BMS
If you are in your 50s, 60s or 70s your chances of acquiring this order are higher
It begins spontaneously with no triggering factor involved
Causes upper respiratory tract infection
Most often accompanied by gustatory disturbances
There are 3 types of BMS namely:
- Type 1 burning mouth syndrome (BMS)
  - Patients have no symptoms upon waking
  - Progression of symptoms throughout the day
  - Nightime symptoms are variable
  - Nutritional deficiency and diabetes may produce a similar pattern
- Type 2 burning mouth syndrome (BMS)
  - Patients have continuous symptoms throughout the day
  - Asymptomatic at night
  - This type is associated with chronic anxiety
- Type 3 burning mouth syndrome (BMS)
  - Patients have intermittent symptoms throughout the day
  - Sometimes patients experience symptoms free days
  - Food allergy is suggested as a potential mechanism
