Monroe premiered on ITV1 on March 10, 2011

James Nesbitt stars as brilliant and unusual neurosurgeon Monroe in this brand new medical drama.

Each episode will feature one compelling story of the week about life or death situations. The drama will focus on the way in which a serious injury or disease cuts across the lives of everyone involved, from hospital staff to patients to relatives. And how that group become, in an intense few days, a reluctant, dysfunctional family united by hopes, fears and grief.

At the centre of this stands Monroe, his trainees, his anaesthetist and his poker school - and his colleague, Jenny Bremner, who has contempt for his cockiness.

Nesbitt is joined by a strong ensemble cast including Sarah Parish (Mistresses, Cutting It) as cardiac surgeon Jenny Bremner with Tom Riley (Bouquet of Barbed Wire, Lost in Austen) as anaesthetist Dr Laurence Shepherd.

Manjinder Virk (Britz, Bradford Riots) is registrar Sally Fortune and Susan Lynch (Elizabeth: The Golden Age, Nora) is Anna, Monroe’s wife. Sarah Smart (Wallander, Funland) and Shaun Evans (The Take, The Virgin Queen) will guest star in episode one.

Great first episode with Alison with a brain tumour but the way Monroe helped her deal with the frightening decision was good and asking her what music she liked so he could play it in the operating theater was really great but giving her husband a bag of fruit to cover for him leaving backfired, the doctor's passing out reminded me of Quince and the bomb shell his wife gave him after their son left for collage was interesting

Those brothers were very lucky to survive the gun shots but joking about the injury while the father was standing behind was unfortunate, what a strange demand to be able to watch while they did brain surgery on his son and Monroe knew once he was there he couldn't stomach it but the dad was a real jerk

Monroe deciding to avoid surgery after he had half the patient's head shaved i thought was amusing and that was a surprise proposition from Jenny to Laurence to find a place to have sex but sad about her patient's surgery that was more for her daughter than herself

Another good episode with Monroe convincing Brendan to go ahead with an operation that will help control the epilepsy he suffers with but thinking that God is speaking to him during his seizures was interesting and it looks like his daughter was right to try and get her dad not to have the surgery

Monroe having to operate on a work colleague after Sally collapsed with an aneurysm in her brain which was touch and go when they took longer than they should of with out the risk of brain damage but then having to have a heart operation before she recovered from the brain surgery was impressive

That was sad when a 13-year-old girl is admitted following being involved in a road accident which reminded Monroe of his own daughter and with little hope that the girl will survive he does try brain surgery but with no luck which was tragic

How quick Monroe turned of the shaking in Terry's arm was impressive but with him hanging around the hospital I thought something else was wrong and I'm glad he did Paul's surgery against hospital wishes

Witney complaining because she missed the chance of a rare surgery because she was busy and didn't answer her phone was interesting and trying to make the year worth living for Lynn when she was resigned to the fact that she’ll die of cancer within that time was sad as the operation went wrong

Wilson must of been mad turning down the registrar's job but Springer thinking he was the best person for the job was amusing especially turning up in a suit and Witney must of realised her liaison with Shepherd might have consequence as he was with Jenny

Springer regretting handing over the anger patient was amusing as the procedure was risky considering they were going to stop her heart for half an hour but hitting Monroe after the operation was amusing, Witney promising the patient he would be OK was sad as he didn't make it

Monroe doing brain surgery in the attempt to cure her epilepsy was great but having a fit while having surgery could of been fatal and Jenny talking the teenage girl to go ahead with the heart transplant was interesting

Jenny asking Shepherd to leave he should of seen coming as he slept with Witney but Jenny refusing Witney's resignation was a surprise and the 24 stone patient not surviving was sad and to make things worse they were joking about his weight before surgery
