About the Show:
Sam Briggs (Kyle Bornheimer) is an entertainment magazine editor who will go to any lengths necessary to impress his girlfriend's parents; however, that proves to be easier said than done. Sam and his girlfriend, Melanie Clayton (Erinn Hayes), have to break the news to her very conservative parents that they are engaged to be married and have a baby on the way. Melanie's father, Dick (Kurtwood Smith), a stern judge, and her mother, Angela (Nancy Lenehan), are over protective of their daughter and have trouble dealing with the anger and resentment they have toward Sam. Despite Sam's valient efforts, each positive step he takes usually results in two steps back.

Episode 01: Pilot
Sam and Mel are thrilled that they are having a baby, and can't wait to go visit Mel's parents to give them the news. But unfortunately for Sam there are many mishaps that get in the way. First Sam is delayed at an office party by a drunk, flirtatious co-worker, who throws up on him. When he tries to shower at her place while she is passed out, she wakes up and throws him out with no clothes on. He shows up in a garbage bag as a diaper to his future inlaws. It all goes down hill from there.

Episode 02: The Bird
Sam and Mel are spending the week at Sam's parents house, and Sam is trying to repair the damage he did with Mel's parents. However, he accidentally kills one of Dick's beloved birds. He tries to replace the bird with a new look-a-like bird, but in doing so lets the other bird out of the cage, and it flies away. He also screws things up with Mel's older sister, who is there with her baby and young son. He keeps walking in on her while she is pumping. And lastly, he thinks he has captured the notorious neighborhood robber, but it turns out it is actually Mel's brother David, who has just arrived form Africa.

Episode 03: The Monitor
Sam invites his friend Adam from work to help fix the portrait of Dick that he ruined. Adam arrives and falls immediately in lust with Mel's younger sister Chloe. Dick does not approve, and wants Adam out of the house. In the meantime, Sam has been trying to win over Sarah's son Scottie. Sarah has also taken the baby to sleep in her room with her -- leaving the baby's room vacant. Later when Dick and Angela go to bed, they hear something that sounds like people having sex. In fact the baby monitor has been left in their room under the bed, and Chloe and Adam are in the babies room getting busy

Episode 04: The Truck
In this episode Sam and Mel have their first big doctor's appointment for the pregnancy in town, and Sam has lost his keys. So they have to borrow Dick's vintage truck to go to the appointment. They Have still not told the family about the marriage or pregnancy, so they are keeping the appointment hush-hush. In the mean time, Sarah's husband, Chad shows up at the house, and the family just adores him. At the end of the episode Sam parks the truck over some dead leaves, and as the family is gathering for the annual family picture, Mel tells the family about the pregnancy and marriage. A second later, the truck explodes in the background.

Episode 05: The Club
With the wedding less than a week away, Sam and Melanie find themselves having to take care of the final touches. This proves to be difficult for an emotional Mel who would rather hide out from Angela and watch episodes of “Baby Stories.” Sam heads to his office to pickup the wedding programs and inadvertently ends up inviting more people to the wedding. There's no room for them and he needs to uninvite them and does this by lying and saying Mel called off the wedding. Adam hears this news and tells Chloe who then calls Angela and Dick. Dick,thinking the wedding is off, calls the club to cancel the wedding. Dick and Sam realize they must get it back before Mel finds out but it has already been re-booked by someone else—Dick’s nemesis at the club,Charles. Dick and Sam challenge Charles and his wife to a game of Bridge but Sam doesn't know how to play.

Episode 06: The Ring
Dick’s mother, Ruth, comes into town and everyone is on edge because she doesn’t get along with Angela at all. Sam is tasked with picking her up at the train station but ends up picking up the wrong grandma. Once Grandma Ruth is correctly picked up and brought to the house, she proceeds to start insulting and picking on Angela. Sam tries to walk the fine line and agree with both of the women. Unknowingly,Sam gives Ruth alcohol and she proceeds to get completely drunk and runs around the yard. Meanwhile, taking care of Sarah's baby, Sam accidentally lets her eat one of the wedding rings. He has to search through the baby’s diaper to find the ring and ends up soiling Angela’sold wedding dress that Melanie doesn’t have the courage to say she doesn’t want to wear. He does get Angela and Ruth call a tentative truce and even apologize to one another.

Episode 07: The Vows
Sam can’t believe the bad luck he is having and he wants to show Mel’s parents that he is worthy of their daughter. His efforts are thwarted by his brother-in-law Chad, who always happens to be around looking and acting perfect. Speaking of perfect, Sam and Mel need to appear to be the ideal couple or else the family minister will not marry them. Angela is concerned that they are not taking the meeting with the reverend seriously enough, especially since Mel has not finished writing her wedding vows. Sam is determined to make a good impression however his bad luck streak doesn’t seem to be over.

Episode 08: The Cake
It is a day before the wedding and Sam’s parents are going to meet Dick and Angela for the first time. Mel and Sam are both extremely nervous about their parents’ first encounter. In an attempt to ease the introductions, Mel and Sam find themselves having to lie about Dick and Angela’s health.

Episode 09: The Wedding
Sam and Mel’s wedding day is finally here and there are a million things to get finished before the start of the ceremony. When Angela and Mel have a spat about Angela’s over involvement, Angela decides to check out. Mel is busy getting ready so the final arrangements fall on Sam’s lap. Dick throws his back out and can’t help with much but does give Sam advice on how to smooth things over with Angela. Suffice to say it doesn’t work and Sam finds himself struggling to make sure that Mel has her perfect day.

Episode 10: The Apartment
Dick and Angela come into the city and Dick hears that Sam has the task of firing a fellow employee. Dick thinks it will be good for Sam because it will force him to be more firm and direct with people.Angela learns that Sam is showing the vacant apartment upstairs to potential renters and she decides it would be a great pied a terre for her and Dick. Angela explains it will be good to be close to them because she can help with the baby. Sam and Mel must prove to Angela that they don’t need her help. Dick is reluctant to tell Angela he doesn’t want to rent the apartment and Sam realizes that Dick isn’t as firm and direct as he lets on.

Episode 11: The Gift
It is Sam’s first Christmas as an official part of the family and he can’t wait to give Mel her gift. He prides himself on being a great gift-giver. When he learns that Dick bought Angela the same old thing he offers to help Dick get something really special for her. In the meantime, Angela busies herself baking her famous holiday cookies and hiding Sam’s gift to Mel. Sam’s attempt to help Dick get the perfect gift doesn’t end so perfectly.

Episode 12: The Article
Sam gets promoted to feature writer at the magazine and is ecstatic. He can’t wait to tackle his first article however he is having a hard time picking the right subject. An unfortunate misunderstanding at Mel and Angela’s gynecologist office has Sam walking in on Angela. Sam can’t get the incident out of his mind and is encouraged by his boss to write about what happened. Knowing Angela and Dick will never forgive him if he does, Sam secretly writes it just to get it out of his system but sadly the article ends up in the wrong hands.

Episode 13: The Puppy
Mel and Sam start attending a birthing class and everyone begins to warn Sam that he will have to watch a birthing video by the end of the class. Once he hears that, he tries his best to get out of the class.Meanwhile, at Mel’s work, a liter of puppies are being born so Sam gets to see a “real” birth where he has a very adverse reaction to this experience.

Episode 14: The Sex
Mel and Sam are left to babysit their nephew Scotty. Dick is unsure of Sam’s parenting skills but Sam tries to reassure Dick that he can handle the task. Things seemingly go well with Scotty as Sam regain some confidence when Scotty snaps a photo of Sam and Mel in an uncompromising position. Mel and Sam feverishly look for the camera only to find that Scotty took it to school for a family photo exhibition.

Episode 15: The Epidural
Mel tries to take sometime for herself before the baby is born but her water breaks just as she gets ready to start her day. When Mel alerts Sam that she is in labor, he overreacts, accidentally dropping his phone in a mailbox which makes it impossible for him to hear which hospital Dick and Angela are taking Mel. A misunderstanding with a postal worker lands him in the hospital where they give Sam an epidural; he is determined to reach Mel and breaks out of the hospital in order to find her before their daughter’s birth.

Episode 16:The Party
When Sam gives it his all to help the Clayton'sprepare for Dick's birthday party, he loses his pants and some dignityin his effort to make everything perfect.
